What is Stax in Magic?

Stax decks use permanents that tax, restrict, or consume resources to make ordinary game actions increasingly difficult. The archetype's name comes from Smokestack and traditionally involves breaking symmetry so the restrictions hurt opponents more than you.

Static Orb limits untapping, while Rule of Law restricts spellcasting and Tangle Wire temporarily locks down permanents. Mana rocks, expendable tokens, and carefully chosen commanders can let the Stax player operate under constraints that hobble everyone else.
