The monarch is a designation a player can possess. The monarch draws an additional card at the beginning of their end step, but another player can steal the crown by dealing combat damage to the current monarch.
Court enchantments become stronger while you retain the monarchy, while creatures such as Custodi Lich provide immediate value when making you the monarch. The mechanic naturally turns multiplayer games into a wonderfully petty fight over one imaginary chair.
