Rats are a creature type concentrated heavily in black and associated with discard, sacrifice, poison, tokens, and strength in numbers. Several individual Rats also support decks containing large quantities of one particular card.
Ogre Slumlord produces Rats whenever other nontoken creatures die, while Ashcoat of the Shadow Swarm provides a substantial typal boost and graveyard value. Bloomburrow added still more Rat support through blue-black threshold strategies.
