Commander is a proxy friendly format in which no one, even in tournaments requires you to buy them. \n.Competitive tournaments in my area allow 25 proxies plus Reserved List, making a competitive deck in reality only cost around 300€, instead of 3000+\n.I keep track of my competitive games as these not only keep me motivated, but also warn me that my decks might need a metashift tweak when I hit a loosing streak.
