Shades are a creature type traditionally associated with black creatures that can repeatedly increase their power and toughness by spending black mana. They turn unused mana into combat pressure and become increasingly dangerous as the game continues.
Crypt Ripper combines the familiar pump ability with haste, while Nirkana Revenant produces extra black mana and can spend that abundance on increasing its own size. Shades naturally reward black mana bases.
