{"ops":[{"insert":"With this deck, I wanted to build a cycling deck, because of how simple and elegant the mechanic is, but my aim was to not just build a boring, generic Gavi deck where I just cycle cards for free. From this idea, I landed upon Astral Slide (and Drift and Escape Protocol) which combine another excellent gameplan, blink. These cards form the core engine of the deck, with a ton of great ETB effects and a toolbox package, including cards like Imperial Recruiter which can be repeatedly blinked to multiply its value. Then, I needed to find the right commander, first of all, they had to include blue and white for the blink cards and just generically the best colours for cycling and then I landed on either Esper or Jeskai, with black having a few good cycling cards like Street Wraith and Archfiend of Ifnir and more graveyard interaction than anyone could handle. However, I chose to go with Jeskai, despite red being by far the worst colour in magic, it has some nice pinging creatures and arguably better cycling cards, such as Tectonic Reformation. Another huge reason why I chose to go down the Jeskai path was to use Shiko, a dragon which makes a copy of a <=3 mana spell in your graveyard and lets you play it for free. This fitted perfectly into my deck since it becomes one of my best blink targets and fills the slot of graveyard interaction that I lost by not using black. With Shiko being able to grab the majority of my cycling cards, this deck has evolved into a pile of cycling and ETB cards which uses Astral Slide to provide a slough of value, not only re-triggering ETBs, but also acting as protection, turning all of my cycling cards into so much more than just a single draw. I didn't want to pick too obvious of a commander, so nothing that mentioned cycling or discarding but having a great ETB, and also recursion fitted great. I also considered Sharuum, the Hegemon, however as I was already inspired by Salubrious Snail's Sharuum Slide deck, I didn't want it to be an exact clone. For similar reasons, Kroxa and Kunaros became another option, however by removing blue, I lost access to Escape Protocol, meaning I become much more vulnerable to exile based removal such as Farewell, by virtue of only having 2 copies of Astral Slide, as this is one of the greatest weaknesses of any hidden commander deck. This deck has now resulted in being an incredible value generating machine and can quickly close out the game with a combo of Archaeomancer (or Pinnacle Monk), Escape Protocol, any way to cycle an instant or sorcery for 0 mana, and any payoff for cycling cards or creatures entering (e.g. Impact Tremors). I won't go fully in depth, but this will essentially result in you having a spell that says X mana: Draw X cards and trigger your payoff card X times since you can essentially cycle the card for 1 mana an unlimited number of times. (Can also go infinite if you have a second copy of Escape Protocol and Cloud Of Fairies.\n"}]}
