Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"Summary"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Obeka is an interesting deck in that upkeep triggers are generally very powerful, but also very slow. Obeka allows us to cheat time and speed up our upkeep triggers, resulting in sudden and unexpected wins in many cases. This deck is firmly in the Bracket 4 range both in card selection and intention. It can threaten wins starting on turn 5 and fairly consistently can win turn 6/7. \n\nHow Obeka Wins"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nPrimary Win Cons"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"The primary win cons in this deck are Court of Ambition + Obeka or Court of Embereth + Obeka causing direct damage to the table after Obeka triggers multiple upkeeps. \n\nThere are some secondary win cons such as Court of Cunning + Bloodchief Ascension, using Obeka to trigger multiple upkeeps as the monarch (this assumes that Bloodchief has at least 3 quest counters on it). \n\nThe main strategy of the deck is to power Obeka out with some sort of protection in hand and have her survive until your next turn. On the next turn, play one of the courts, becoming the monarch, then swing with Obeka hitting somebody to trigger at least 2 upkeeps. With CoA this causes the table to discard 4 cards or take 12 damage. With CoE this causes you to create 2 knight tokens, dealing at least 5 damage to the table (2 during the first upkeep, 3 during the second). \n\nThe CoC + BA win con is arguably more immediate if all of the prerequisites are met (BA online with 3 quest counters). In that scenario you can play CoC, swing with Obeka, cause all players to mill 20 cards, dealing 40 total damage to each player from BA and netting yourself 120 life. However it can be difficult to turn on the BA engine without having it in your starting hand and it is not as efficient as CoA or CoE. \n\nAlternate Win Cons"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"The last few win cons are also not quite as efficient. Revel in Riches + Generous Plunderer can net a win given enough upkeep triggers from Obeka. Mechanized Production + any artifact can also net wins with Obeka. Technically MP + Generous Plunderer could be a more efficient RiR win as you could enchant a treasure token to copy. \n\nUtility Cards"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Some of the utility cards are helpful to speed up the more efficient win cons. Court of Vantress can copy CoA and CoE when you’re the monarch causing exponential damage. For example, with both CoV and CoA on the battlefield, Obeka will hit for 2 damage causing 2 additional upkeeps. The first upkeep you would have CoV copy CoA. The original CoA would trigger causing 2 discards or 6 damage. Second upkeep, CoV would copy CoA again (3 total CoA now). The original CoA would trigger and the first copy of CoA would trigger causing 4 discards or 12 damage. This leads to the table discarding 6 total cards or taking 18 damage in one turn. Additionally, these triggers will happen during your normal upkeeps as well if they are not removed. If you are still the monarch this means by the next turn you will have 3 online copies of CoA which will likely deal 18 damage for a total of up to 36 damage (or discarding 12 cards) in one turn cycle. Realistically the table will not have enough cards in hand to continue discarding to avoid damage meaning you will be dealing a good amount of damage and causing the table to potentially discard any responses to your board state. \n\nNotably. CoV can be used in the Mechanized Production or Revel in Riches win cons as well since it can copy artifacts. \n\nAdditional copy spells such as Estrid’s Invocation can be used similarly to the above example.\n\nFinal Thoughts"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"This deck is very commander-centric. If Obeka is removed or cannot get combat damage through, it becomes difficult to win games. It can still be done since upkeep triggers are powerful (creating creatures, drawing cards, etc.) but it drastically slows the deck down. The best strategy is to try and stick Obeka early while others are building their board OR to have protection in hand while casting Obeka. There have been games where I’ve needed multiple pieces of protection just to have her stick around for a turn cycle. \n\nA good opening hand generally has a couple of lands, a piece of ramp, either one of our win cons OR a tutor to get to a win con, and some piece of protection for Obeka. It's important to mulligan if you don’t have at least some way to get to a win con (in hand, tutor, draw) as the deck does not have enough creatures generally to win by combat alone. \n"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Some quick notes:\nProtection for Obeka cannot be overstated. "},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Obeka having menace usually means you have at least one open player you can hit to trigger upkeeps. However, making her unblockable is a nice way to guarantee it. "},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Equipment that buffs Obeka can be good to trigger even more upkeeps, but generally it is better for it to include some sort of built-in protection or unblockable ability too. Again, the main thing we want is for Obeka to stick and trigger upkeeps. It doesn’t matter how big she is if she’s gone. "},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nThis deck can be super fun to play and causes some really unexpected “I win” moments. However, expect to become a target after a game or two as she gets scary once people understand what she does. \n\nAlternate strategies/maybeboard"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Some other strategies include copying Obeka with cards like Sakashima of a Thousand Faces and Shaun Father of Synths. These can help make Obeka stickier and reduce the need for ongoing protection. \n\nThere are other “Court of*” cards which aren’t included, but could be useful in certain situations. They’re excluded here mainly since they are more target to single players instead of the table at large. \n\nOther cards which benefit from upkeeps are Honden (shrines) and certain equipment that can be used to buff Obeka. These are generally not included in favor of additional protection, but could be included and may work well for certain play styles or pods that don’t run as much removal. \n"}]}
