Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"For the November 2026 deckbuilding contest, I present:\n\nBallast, a deck about emptying the rocks out of your pirate ship, summoning a dragon to your treasure hoarde, and then casting your Giant Pirate a few dozen times in a row.\n\nSince the prompt was to take an under-utilized commander or partner pair, I thought I'd go with one of the unusual mono-colored partner pairs, which see very little use across the mechanic. That lack of use makes sense, since one of the most fun parts of Partner is getting to mess around with colors and abilities that don't often go with one another.\n\nBut for this deck, I wanted to use the partners to build on one another instead, using "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dargo, the Shipwrecker"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Toggo, Goblin Weaponsmith"}},{"insert":" to build an aggressive, mono-red burn list that accelerates the game and can combo off quickly.\n\nDargo is known for his combo ability, notably going infinite with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Phyrexian Altar"}},{"insert":" and two treasure tokens. Since his text says \"for each other artifact or creature you've sacrificed this turn,\" once you've sacrificed a few permanents, you'll be able to cast and sacrifice him endlessly, with each new time he's sacrificed paying for the commander tax and Altar producing the one red mana you'll need. Naturally, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Warstorm Surge"}},{"insert":" makes a perfect closer to pair with this combo, since it will be dealing 7 damage per cast. But that's a fragile combo, and Dargo is expensive unless you have some artifacts or creatures to sacrifice.\n\nSo that's where Toggo comes in. Get him out before your land drop on turn 2 with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pyretic Ritual"}},{"insert":" or a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sol Ring"}},{"insert":" --> "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ruby Medallion"}},{"insert":" turn 1 and you'll start creating a Rock token for each land you play. With a host of self-sacrificing fetch lands, you'll easily be able to get two or more rocks per turn, perfect for sacrificing to cast Dargo to kick-start your combo loop.\n\nAnd besides the rock tokens, I decided to build the rest of the deck around treasure tokens, giving you plenty more artifacts to sacrifice while also building some pretty huge mana early in the game. Your mono-red treasure dragons are here: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ancient Copper Dragon"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldspan Dragon"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smaug the Magnificent"}},{"insert":". Plus everyone's favorite goblin author, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Crime Novelist"}},{"insert":", to add another source of red mana for your Dargo casts.\n\nBut beyond those dragons and a few other creatures that will help you get treasures and/or extra land drops (shout out to Toggo's own combo here, using "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scaretiller"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Unwinding Clock"}},{"insert":", and any fetch land to make as many rocks as you have Mountains in your deck, which is 29, by the way, and since we're doing burn,"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Valakut, the Molten Pinnacle"}},{"insert":" is here too. Shout out to "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Lonely Mountain"}},{"insert":", which is typed as a Mountain and can also reduce the cost of its ability using the rocks Toggo creates.\n\nWhile combos are nothing new to Toggo and Dargo, what's new is using them in synergistic tandem. In fact, the setup lets you choose your route based on your opening hand. Do you have several treasure creation spells plus Warstorm Surge? Try to hit Dargo early and out-pace the competition. Have a fetch land and Scaretiller? Go with Toggo. You can adapt based on what the deck gives you at any given time.\n\nAnd despite having few creatures beyond the commanders (for a total of 11), the deck will feel pretty aggro, with lots of burn, several damage multipliers, and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Descent into Avernus"}},{"insert":" to accelerate things. Those plus some versatile spellslinging and red's treasure-generating card draw spells should give you a fighting chance to present a real threat at a bracket 4 table.\n\nThanks for your consideration!\n"}]}
