Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"This Deck is a madman's brew for a casual bracket 2 deck. The inspiration for this deck came from MTG Goldfish on Seth's, Better known as SaffronOlive, much abrew about random encounters. I was enticed, so I set out to create a strong, but fun deck of cards the exhibits Magics Biggest creatures and cheating them out.\n\nAlthough this deck is specifically brewed for bracket 2, it's can punch above its weight into bracket 3 and has even seen a Bracket 4 win. I've played this deck hundreds of times, In person at my LGS and online. Over that past year, it has received a few modifications, tweaks and builds. this is the current state of one of my favorite decks I have ever brewed. \n\nThe Deck focus it's self on the Card \"Random Encounter\" Printed in the Final Fantasy set. This deck is set up to force it's opponents into random threats scattered through out the deck itself. However, Random Encounter is one card out of the rest of the 98, how can we continue to produce massive creatures and keep the board flooded with power and value? Allow me to show you the key cards in this deck that make it's heart beat.\n\nFirst off is the commander pairing. This is my first time brewing with partner commanders, and I chosen the pair of Kodama of the east tree and Kraum, Ludevic's Opus.\n\nKodama doesn't need much of an introduction, he is well known for his combo potential in the meta game. However this deck doesn't abuse him in the usual way. Being brewed for bracket 2, we shy away from back-breaking Infinite mana combos and use him more as a value engine. Kodama can put additional lands into play and help us cheat on mana curve with big creature. He is the cornerstone to the deck and synergizes with Random encounters and it's counter parts that we are going to be talking about later on. \n\nI Chose to pair Kodama with Kraum for a few reasons. His colors, Temur is very creature based and I couldn't resist the help of some of the treasure generators and haste enablers red has to offer. Red also offers us a very upfront Win condition, on top of being needed for Random Encounter. Kraum is also a hasty 4/4 flier that can help us cheat out a 5 drop using his cohort Kodama in the late game. He also is a niche, but useful card draw engine. Look at him as a budget Rhystic Study. Our deck can use all of the cards we can get. typically however he hangs out in the command zone until he is needed.\n\nRandom Encounter is not our only cheat spell in the deck. We also use Last March of the Ents, Breaching Dragonstorm, Primal Surge, and Indomitable Creativity. With these cards we can churn through our deck and slap down huge threats that our opponents have to deal with or they will continue to create more and more value as the game goes on. These cards only gain value as the game goes on. The deck is a host of 50 creatures, there is no shortage of baddies to play. \n\nThis deck has a Average Mana cost of 5. Meaning that there is a good chance that we are going to see a card we cannot immediately play in our opening hand. To balance this out, we use a land ramp package to stay the course and drop some big bads on our way to flooding the board. We shy away from mana dorks and rocks mainly because they are easily defeated in this bracket. We would rather see a land hit the battlefield and stick rather than a lanowar elf getting caught up in an early game sweep or target removal from former victims of random encounters. We do play some basic land fetchers like Topiary stomper, Clifftop lookout and Farhaven elf to have some low to the ground basic fetch. the usual suspect spells are here, Cultivate, three visits, natures lore. We also use fetch lands to fetch our Surveil lands to keep the top of our library in control. Be not afraid of binning a creature or a late game spell. We have plenty of recursion. \n\nHard Rule to playing this deck is it's mulligans. if you do not have atleast 3 lands or 2 lands and ramp, ship it home. DO NOT fall for the 1 land sol ring plan this is not the deck to do it with. Don't be that guy twiddling their thumbs hoping to draw a land Next turn. you will miss out on what this deck has to offer. There is time to be greedy in the late game.\n\nthere are 50 creatures in deck, all with various jobs and synergies woven together in this pile of cards. \n\nOur key wincons are Purphoros, God of the forge and Terror of the peaks. Commander is a tough game to win though combat damage. In a less than ideal game we need to deal 120 points of damage to defeat 3 opponents who have neither gained nor lost life during the duration of the game. Tall order if you ask me, so we use these 2 cards to widdle away at life totals. \n\nIn conjunction of these 2 cards we use, Omnath, Locus of Rage and Avenger of Vendikar to slam our opponets life totals in one fell swoop. We naturally play a lot of lands and fetch, so we naturally synergize with landfall strategies. Purphoros and Avenger of Vendikar can put games away on their own. Omnath and Terror can delete boardstates and life totals with just a few land drops. Kodama magnifies this due his ability to potentially double land drops from other sources than himself. Zopandrel, Hunger Dominus is our other win condition. He doubles the power and toughness of all of our big men and he synergizes with a lot of our attack and damage triggers when he doesn't outright win us the game.\n\nour Tertiary wincon is Ulamog. Paired with Sneak attack and Show and tell, Ulamog is probably the least \"Bracket 2\" way to play. it's more of a force scoop situation and I try not to play it often, but when you are behind it is a great playing field leveler and early game wincon. Honestly he is sideboarded out when i play at my LGS.\n\nAll decks need to draw cards at some point. We have a few key card draw creatures in our deck that draw absurd amounts of cards given the chance. Starwinder from Edge of Eternities is hands down the best spell in this slot. A 7 drop 7/7 that draws cards for each point of damage delt on combat. The big upside is that Starwinder can be warped in for 4 mana, This trigger Kodama for a ludicrous amount of value, by cheating out another 7 drop and drawing card in the background. Our Runner up is Vaultborn Tyrant. We naturally play big creatures, and vaultborn is a big body that just draws us a fist full of cards every turn. Vaultborn, Kodama and Omnath create a nasty cultivator colossus like loop that draws cards and creates bodies. if you hit a land pocket you are in the money. Mixed with Terror of the peaks you are going to delete at least one player from the game just on Terror triggers alone. Ancient Silver Dragon is here too, he's cool. Our most recent addition of Prime Speaker Zegana has proven quite fruitful, although it's strict mana cost is a downside. Even with just Kodama down, PSZ draws us 7 cards and allows us to cheat out a 6 drop after we drawn those cards.\n\nWith all these super strong synergies, we need mana, and loads of it. with this in mind we employ the likes of Klauth, unrivaled ancient, old Gnawbone and Ancient Cooper Dragon. with Average mana cost of 5 we need all of the mana that we can even get. Dropping any of these dragon's is an immediate threat to other players for obvious reason, however due to the nature of our deck the threats are far worse than usual. Kodama and treasures go hand in hand, a treasure hitting the battlefield means Kodama can place a land down. Klauth is our weakest piece, but even the little mana he brings by himself is enough to set off an incredible chain of events. Most of the time when one of these guys swings, it's catapults us into a position way ahead of the opposition. Nxybloom ancient is also present and can help things move along, but more often than not is a play pass card.\n\nOur deck is mostly focused on playing on our board, so we lack some interaction. However, we have some creatures that can mulch problematic cards on our opponents boards. Boilerbilges and carnosaur can deal direct damage, colossal Sky turtle can bounce problematic creatures, bane of progress to reset the board of Artifacts and enchantments, summon bahamut and woodfall primus are our high end to snipe pieces away. Kogla and mindflyer to punish creature decks and snipe key creatures. In the face of strong interaction we have a few recursion pieces. Eternal Witness, greenwarden of murasa to reclaim what was lost. These guys can also recur our cheat pieces for even more explosive turns.\n\nI could ramble on about every small synergy that takes place in this deck for hours and even write a love novel about it, but those are the main ways to win in the deck. This deck generates insane value and onboard presence is left unchecked for even a turn, and even in the face of stiff competition, can rise above and slam tables in dominating prowess. Incredible what 600$ of creatures can do together. \n\nHowever, this deck can fall flat to some strategies. Stax, boardwipe tribal, and aggro can stamp this deck out before it even gets going. Although we are playing blue this deck struggles on the stack with its lack of counter magic and protection. It comes with the territory of playing for value. If you are playing against a deck that aims to win in the first 4 turns, you are going to be hard pressed to come out on top. It's not impossible, Turn 4 Kodama is a very possible thing with the ramp structure of the deck. This is why I brewed for bracket 2. The deck can be slow at times and the Magic Gods are only so forgiving. You can also suffer from success with the card draw as well. Sometime Vaultborn can drill you to the end of your deck. I'm embarrassed to say that it's happened on a few occasions, stacking triggers is your friends in this situation.\n\nbut...\n\nif you like spilling your hand, spilling your deck, Insane vaule, managing 100s of triggers, playing some of the meanest creatures and just going absolutely sicko mode on turn 5-7 this is the deck for you. It takes a steady hand sometimes but once you grab the reigns confidently this deck is absurdly fun. Don't let the price of this deck scare you. a Printer or staples is much cheaper then this. also shout out to bootleg mage and MPC Fill for keeping commander CHEAP. It's not the size of you wallet that wins games, it's what you do with it.\n\nGoing from Bracket 2 to 3 I have a small list of game changers. Geae's cradle can be tutored with Ulvenwald Hydra and late game value is unmatched, One ring is just too good and Conscrated Sphinx is just the goat of drawing cards. I shy away from all of the tutors because all in all this is still a theme deck and the theme is random encounters. meaning the creatures that are drawn and played are in random fashion. Tutors such as worldly and Natural order only take away from the experience for the player and potential victims. all it takes is the right creature and the right amount of mana and this deck is firing on all 8 cylinders. \n"}]}
