(This is far more than enough with the amount of included ramp and an average mana value of 2.5.) Could the deck run 38 lands? Yes, I agree with Rachel Weeks most of the time but in this case, the overall mana value of the deck is 165 and there are only 10 cards included at mana value 4 or above. There are 14 pieces of ramp and five of them are very efficient one mana ramp cards. You will generally have the 3-4 mana you need to play something on every turn. This is not a bracket 4 competitive deck, it's bracket 2 Voltron so you should get to participate. \n\nMake sure are viewing grouped by Categories (Multiple) so you can see the intended use for included cards.\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Bracket 2: "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Rules wise, the deck sits firmly in Bracket 2 without any game changers, but it is definitely efficient enough to play in a Bracket 3 pod if required. Voltron as an archetype is just too vulnerable and WAY too slow to play at higher power levels. Plus the deck has almost no stack interaction. This deck cannot win at instant speed. If you wanted to build a deck like this to compete at a higher level, there would be A LOT more Stax and it really wouldn't play the same. Rule Zero conversations are important. For this deck I usually tell folks that \"It is a well built Selesnya Voltron deck. It is bracket two and focuses on winning through commander damage with lots of enchantments and equipment. It has some stax in it because Voltron is a fairly weak overall strategy that wants to play a slightly slower game, but nothing super un-fun to play against. Mostly things that prevent interaction on my turn.\" That is how I describe it during every rule zero conversation. I do not mind answering any questions that folks might have about the deck. \n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Tutor targets:"},{"insert":" "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"For an early game Aura/Enchantment tutor your probably want "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Strong Back"}},{"insert":". In the mid-game, you will likely search for one of your card draw engines like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Trouble in Pairs"}},{"insert":" but truthfully if you are ramping well, you will probably search for Super State anyway. Hamlet is a great include in a Voltron deck where we are worried about seeing a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maze of Ith"}},{"insert":" across the table from us. With this new land from Strixhaven, we just name Maze of Ith as it enters and it will shut them off from "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"ALL"},{"insert":" of our opponents as long as our Hamlet remains in play. This land is selling for less than $1 for a basic non-foil printing. Compared to the price of a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Wasteland"}},{"insert":", a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Strip Mine"}},{"insert":", or a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Boseiju, Who Endures"}},{"insert":", it is looking to be our best include to deal with one of our deck's biggest counters. Not only is it an inexpensive card to deal with one of the deck's biggest counters, but unlike our "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Demolition Field"}},{"insert":", we do not have to pay into it and sac it to use it. \n\nAnother hidden gem that is very overlooked is "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Secluded Starforge"}},{"insert":". This land is less than $1, comes in untapped, taps for colorless mana, and in the late game allows you to pay two mana and tap it, then tap all the equipment you have on the field, whether it is equipped to a creature or not, or even tap unused treasures, to pump something up before you swing. It is difficult to interact with, assists in our primary game plan, and comes in untapped as a functional land. All for less than 50 cents for a base printing.\n\nA niche protection piece to talk about that I happen to really like is "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Angel's Grace"}},{"insert":". It recently took the spot of "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Clever Concealment"}},{"insert":" in the deck. It often felt like we weren't holding up enough mana for Clever Concealment, and Angel's Grace is a pretty unexpected way to prevent a loss to a combo-deck. It feels like a really good include for a deck with the weaknesses that this deck has to prevent a loss at instant speed. A similar card for this slot could be "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Flare of Fortitude"}},{"insert":", but again it is 4 mana and there are only 11 possible creatures that we could sac to make it free, and our commander does not count.\n\nThe last hidden gem I wanted to mention is "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lion Sash"}},{"insert":". Lion sash has recently taken the spot of "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Calamity's Wake"}},{"insert":" in the deck as my favorite piece of graveyard hate. It is targeted, repeatable, and asymmetrical graveyard hate that buffs itself as a creature, or our commander if we equip it to Wilson, and is the exact same mana value as Calamity's Wake. All in all it is just a better include and it's most expensive printing is all of three bucks. As has been said by many folks in the hobby, more graveyard hate is better than less and this is repeatable graveyard hate at instant speed that can be tutored for with multiple cards in the deck. And if you need to exile whole graveyards, then "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scavenger Grounds"}},{"insert":" is still included.\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Coming Soon: "},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"The Hobbit is here. (This is usually where I stop making changes and just play.)\n\nI am aware of how expensive "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Serra's Sanctum"}},{"insert":" is. It's far and away the most expensive card included in the deck or on the maybeboard because it is on the reserved list. It is essentially "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gaea's Cradle"}},{"insert":" for this deck with 28 enchantments in it. If you cannot afford it as one of your game changers, substitute it for one of the others, or just leave it out entirely. It is not going to make or break upgrading the deck. As I stated above, this deck has a very low mana curve, and if one of the other game changers you are going to include is Smothering Tithe, you are not going to have any mana problems. I only included it because I own one. If you aren't putting in a Serra's Sanctum, then I wouldn't include the "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Crop Rotation"}},{"insert":". Crop Rotation will generally be used to find the Serra's Sanctum in most circumstances, but it is also useful to find any one of our really good utility lands in a clutch situation. I would probably go with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Drannith Magistrate"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The One Ring"}},{"insert":" instead. \n\nThis is a decent enough set of changes to make this a bracket 3 deck and still play without feeling like you are seriously outgunned. It's still voltron which will be a pretty low powered bracket three deck, but that's just the way the game is at present.\n\nWith these changes you would always mulligan for a 3 land hand with at least 1 draw engine or tutor. Your "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Idyllic Tutor"}},{"insert":" would basically always be used to find "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smothering Tithe"}},{"insert":" if it is in your opening hand or one of your early draws. Your "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Archdruid's Charm"}},{"insert":" will usually be to find your "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Esper Sentinel"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sram, Senior Edificer"}},{"insert":" for lots of early draw. \n\nThese changes make the deck bracket 3 because of the game changers, and you can do it if you want or feel you need to because of the vibe of wherever you are playing, but it can make some folks salty with the amount of stax, so just be aware of that and have good pregame conversations. It's always important to have good pregame conversations and be honest about what you are playing. Bring more than one deck with you and be flexible with folks who just want to play a game and have fun. \n\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"When it comes to budget, the deck can be built for "},{"attributes":{"italic":true,"bold":true},"insert":"significantly"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":" cheaper if cost is a major factor for you."},{"insert":" "},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nIf you aren't interested in reading through this whole section and making your own changes, I built an ultra budget version of the deck that should function just fine "},{"attributes":{"link":"https://archidekt.com/decks/22835519/budget_buildabear"},"insert":"Here."},{"insert":" It came out to just about $300 as promised and I left a couple cool pricier cards in there to enhance your collection. Enjoy. But if you want to make targeted changes to some of the more expensive includes, read on. \n\nThe Strixhaven Silverquil pre-con really did a number on the budget for this deck. A ton of stuff shot up in price and kinda stuck there. At this point it seems that the stuff that was going to come back down has come down, but "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Brilliant Wings"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Codsworth, Handy Helper"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Retether"}},{"insert":" seem to have settled at new price points that have more than doubled from what they were before, so they have gained permanent recommendations in this section. I've tried to make suggestions for replacements for any card over $10, but sometimes it is hard to keep up as prices change. That easily cheapens up the mana base by well over $300. Swap anything over $5 for a cheaper printing, a basic land, or a cheaper and slower alternative. Hamlet is a great include in a Voltron deck where we are worried about seeing a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maze of Ith"}},{"insert":" across the table from us.
