Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"Early Game"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nUsually our early game is fairly passive as we want to rush to get Watcher in play and start our tentacle ramp as soon as possible. We'll likely be open to early swings for a few turns but all we care about is keeping Watcher alive so we can benefit from drawing on other players turns to give our board protection and resources. Once we have a few tentacles on the field we have the option to play more aggressively and swing with the intent for them to die in order to help untap Watcher earlier. I generally avoid attacking with Watcher and leave him open as a defender for bigger creatures or creatures with trample, however 9 damage is still 9 damage. Creatures like Toothy and Oneirophage are great options to rush in since they're guaranteed to get bigger and with the chance that Watcher gets hated out in the early-mid game, we still have a few threatening creatures to work with.\n\nMid Game"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nAt this point we should have a decent amount of tentacles and a few draw engines to further the ramp. If we're lucky, Toothy is on the field ramping so that when he dies or we choose to sac him we can create a massive amount of tentacles, Wonder is in our graveyard, We have no max hand size, and we have a decent amount of protection at our disposal. At this point you have two main options: Lay low and continue creating tentacles without making any enemies, or swinging for the fences. If we can reliably create a decent amount of tentacles on the next turn, there's no reason to hold back from combat. If we have wonder in our graveyard and an opponent doesn't have a reliable amount of flyers or Tetsuko Umezawa is on the field, moving to combat for a heavy hit should be the only option. If combat isn't in our favor, tentacle deaths allow us to stun a creature every time one dies, so swinging can still be beneficial. Using a sac outlet, casting Scourge of Fleets or Monstrosity of the Lake prior to combat can provide an opening. I tend to avoid swinging with Toothy until he has a large amount of counters on him so we don't lose potential tentacles on his death. \n\nIf Watcher is being repeatedly hated, our deck loses a lot of momentum and starts relying heavier on our other staple creatures such as Toothy, Oneirophage, Body of Knowledge, Psychosis Crawler, Eluge, Nadir Kraken and generating kraken tokens from Ominous Seas. All of these in tandem with our draw engines can give us a lethal boardstate very quickly as these creatures benefit from drawing cards in general, not just on others players turns.\n\nEnd Game"},{"attributes":{"header":2},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nIdeally, we have a strong creature base, defense options and access to a counter spell. Here we go for a lethal swing as soon as possible. We have a few avenues for this.\nUse Monstrosity or Scourge to open the board up\nUse Candlekeep Inspiration, Dragon Throne of Tarkir, Tetsuko Umezawa, Day of the Dragons, or Wonder to our advantage if tentacles are going to be our main offense.\nHave Teferi, Master of Time able to use his ultimate\nAlternatively, if we have omniscience on the field we can win through Psychosis Crawler burn if we have enough cards to draw to burn out our opponents and ways to repeatedly draw, or simply through Lab Man. Sac'ing a Toothy with a large amount of counters is a great way to get instant draw, and combing that with Teferi's Ageless Insight or other draw engines can lead to a massive draw as long as you don't deck yourself out without Lab Man in play.\n\n\n"}]}
