{"ops":[{"insert":"# Shorikai, Genesis Engine — Deck Primer\n**Tags:** #mtg #mtg/deck\n**Companion to:** [[Shorikai-Genesis-Engine]] (full decklist, budget swaps, sideboard, win/loss log)\n\n---\n\n## The Pitch\n\nAzorius control with almost no creatures. Shorikai isn't a creature by default, it's a Vehicle with Crew 8, so it mostly just sits as an artifact. Its real engine is a plain activated ability that doesn't care whether it's crewed: **{1}, {T}: Draw two cards, then discard a card. Create a 1/1 Pilot token that crews Vehicles as though its power were 2 greater.** Hullbreaker Horror is the only other creature in the deck and its 7 power alone can't reach Crew 8, so Shorikai will essentially never actually attack here, and that's fine, it isn't supposed to.\n\nNothing in this list needs to attack to win. That's deliberate. A dense counterspell and removal suite buys time, tutors find the pieces, and the whole shell either assembles a hard combo kill or grinds opponents out on card advantage.\n\n## Core Combo\n\n**Isochron Scepter + Dramatic Reversal + net-positive mana rocks (Sol Ring, Mind Stone, Basalt Monolith, Arcane Signet, Azorius Signet, Talisman of Progress, Liquimetal Torque, The Mind Stone) = infinite mana.**\n\nImprint Dramatic Reversal on Isochron Scepter. Tap your rocks for mana, cast Dramatic Reversal off the Scepter for {2} (untaps every nonland permanent you control, including Shorikai itself, not just the rocks), replay the freed mana, repeat. Once mana is infinite, activate Shorikai's {1},{T} ability, then cast another Dramatic Reversal copy to untap Shorikai again, and loop that as many times as needed, drawing 2 and discarding 1 each cycle until your library is empty. Voltaic Key and Manifold Key can each untap Shorikai once outside this loop for a single bonus activation, but Dramatic Reversal's blanket untap is what actually makes the loop repeatable.\n\nDrawing your whole library is not itself a win condition, it's a setup step that puts your entire deck into your hand alongside infinite mana. What you do with that is the next section.\n\n**Outside the full combo, The Mind Stone also gives Shorikai a second activation most turns.** Once harnessed ({5}{W}, one-time), its end-step ability can blink a tapped Shorikai, it re-enters untapped, letting you draw 2/discard 1 twice in a turn instead of once, no infinite mana required.\n\n## Win Conditions\n\nThree cards actually end the game outright. Everything else either protects one of these or grinds out a win the slow way without ever going infinite.\n\n1. **Approach of the Second Sun.** Cast it once early or mid-game (gain 7 life, it goes 7th from the top of your library), then cast it again from hand later to win instantly. Wins even if the first cast got countered, since it only checks that you cast it, not that it resolved. Drawing your whole library off the Scepter combo puts your copy back in hand if it isn't already there.\n2. **Aetherflux Reservoir.** \"Whenever you cast a spell, gain 1 life for each spell cast this turn. Pay 50 life: deal 50 damage to any target.\" Every Isochron Scepter activation during the infinite loop casts a copy of Dramatic Reversal, which triggers this. Life adds up fast, roughly 10 activations gets you past 50, then pay and fire for 50 damage, repeatable. Doesn't touch your library at all, so it's mill-proof, and it's a fast, decisive kill instead of a grind.\n3. **Jace, Wielder of Mysteries.** \"If you'd draw a card while your library has no cards in it, you win the game instead.\" Turns the Shorikai draw-the-library engine into an automatic win the instant you'd draw past empty, no need to also find Approach in hand. It's a planeswalker, so your own Supreme Verdict or Vanquish the Horde won't accidentally kill it, and being milled only helps it trigger sooner.\n\n**That's it, three real win conditions.** Skullclamp, Sevinne's Reclamation, Narset, Mystic Remora, and the tutor package aren't a fourth one, none of them say \"you win the game.\" What they actually do is generate more cards and answers than opponents have over a long game, which pays off two indirect ways: it raises the odds you naturally draw or tutor into one of the three win conditions above without ever assembling the full Scepter loop, and it grinds opponents down until they can't keep pace and lose the ordinary way (combat, decking, or losing to each other while you sit behind your interaction). Think of the card-advantage package as what makes the three real win conditions reliable, not a win condition itself.\n\nWalking Ballista was considered and briefly added alongside Aetherflux Reservoir, then cut, it did the same job (infinite mana into direct damage) less efficiently, and Gerald wants Hullbreaker Horror to stay the only creature in the deck.\n\n**Hullbreaker Horror is support, not a win condition.** It's a 7/8 flash body that can't be countered, good as a surprise blocker or an answer to a big threat, and its \"whenever you cast a spell, bounce a spell or nonland permanent\" ability triggers on every Dramatic Reversal copy during the combo turn, so if it's in play when you go off you can also strip an opponent's entire board as a side effect. That's disruption and protection for the win conditions above, not one itself. It's also the only creature in the deck, deliberately, Gerald wants to keep it that way.\n\n## Protection Package (\"good for you, not mean\")\n\nA recurring filter for this deck: does a card only restrict opponents, or does it also choke your own plan? Everything below passed that test.\n\n- **Ghostly Prison** — taxes attacks against you, doesn't touch your own turn.\n- **Grand Abolisher** — opponents can't interact on your turn. Makes going off with the Scepter combo safe from instant-speed answers.\n- **Narset, Parter of Veils** — caps opponents' extra draws at one per turn, doesn't touch Shorikai's own draw ability.\n- **Land Tax** — free card selection whenever you're behind on lands, common in a 4-player pod by turn 4-5.\n- **Silence** — one-shot version of Grand Abolisher's protection.\n- **Manifold Key** — untaps an artifact for extra value, or makes Hullbreaker Horror unblockable.\n- **Chimil, the Inner Sun** — spells you control can't be countered, protecting the whole combo turn, plus a repeatable discover 5 for inevitability.\n- **Grafdigger's Cage** and **Torpor Orb** — graveyard and creature-ETB hate. Verified Torpor Orb doesn't conflict with this deck at all (an earlier note in this file was wrong about that), it only stops triggers from creatures entering the battlefield, and Grasp of Fate / Touch the Spirit Realm are enchantments, not creatures, so their own ETB effects are untouched. Hullbreaker Horror's ability isn't an ETB trigger either. Pure upside against opposing reanimator and blink decks.\n\nDeliberately left out despite being powerful: **Winter Orb** (mechanically favors this deck's artifact-heavy ramp, but grinds the whole table to a halt) and spells-per-turn caps like **Deafening Silence** and **High Noon** (this deck wants to chain multiple noncreature spells a turn, those lock you down as hard as anyone).\n\n## Common Matchups\n\n**Vs. Aggro / Go-Wide (fast creature decks, token swarms).** Survive first, wipe second. Ghostly Prison and Blind Obedience buy early time without costing you tempo. Don't burn Supreme Verdict or Vanquish the Horde early, let them overextend into a board, then wipe for maximum value. Grasp of Fate is unusually good here since it hits one permanent per opponent, useful against a wide, multi-threat board. Cursed Totem shuts off token/aristocrats engines that lean on activated abilities. Single big threats get picked off with Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, or Soul Partition rather than spent on a wipe.\n\n**Vs. Combo (fast mana, other infinite-combo pilots).** This is the matchup your counterspell suite exists for: Counterspell, Mana Leak, Memory Lapse, Negate, Spell Pierce, Arcane Denial, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Muddle the Mixture, and Swan Song give you nine ways to interact. Counter the actual combo piece, not the first spell you see. Narset caps their extra draws if they're digging for pieces. Cursed Totem can shut down a combo built on a creature's activated ability. Remember you're also a combo deck, if you're clearly ahead on interaction density, sometimes the right line is to just race them to your own kill instead of playing pure defense.\n\n**Vs. Stax / Prison.** You're better positioned here than most decks, being light on creatures dodges a lot of anti-creature stax, and Mystic Remora, Land Tax, Narset, and Skullclamp all keep your card flow up under taxation. Enlightened Tutor, Merchant Scroll, or Solve the Equation can go find a specific answer to whatever's locking you down. Watch for effects that specifically tax artifacts, since this deck's whole engine is artifact-based, hold up Grand Abolisher or Silence to protect a turn where you need to deploy answers cleanly.\n\n**Vs. Voltron / Commander Damage.** Exile is your best friend here, Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, and Soul Partition all deny recursion tricks on the equipped or auraed-up threat. Where possible, counter the key equipment or aura before it resolves with Swan Song, Spell Pierce, or Negate, cheaper than answering the finished threat later. Ghostly Prison still taxes their attack, it's just weaker here since a Voltron deck usually only needs one creature to connect.\n\n**Vs. Reanimator / Graveyard Recursion.** A genuinely strong matchup now. Grafdigger's Cage stops abilities of creature cards in graveyards and casting from graveyard/library outright, and Torpor Orb shuts off the ETB value on whatever they do manage to reanimate, so their big graveyard payoff creature comes back as a vanilla body. Back these up with counters on the reanimation spell itself, or exile the threat post-resolution with Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, or Soul Partition to deny a second attempt.\n\n**Vs. Mill / Discard.** A genuinely good matchup for this build. Two of your three win conditions (Jace, Aetherflux Reservoir) don't touch your library or actively benefit from a thinner one, only Approach of the Second Sun is vulnerable to being milled away, and you have two backups if that happens. Reliquary Tower removes any concern about discard-based hand attacks.\n\n## Sideboard: Humility\n\nNot in the 100, but worth knowing about. `{2}{W}{W}`, sets every creature to base 1/1 with no abilities. Because Shorikai, Isochron Scepter, and Dramatic Reversal are all artifacts, not creatures, this deck is one of the few that can run Humility without shutting off its own plan. Left out for now because it's genuinely table-warping and there's no regular pod yet to gauge tolerance for that kind of stax. Revisit if a group is explicitly fine with slow, high-stax games. Full note in the Sideboard section of the main deck file.\n\n## Manabase Notes\n\nTwo-color WU on 21 basics plus a full package of duals and utility lands: Adarkar Wastes, Glacial Fortress, Prairie Stream, Seachrome Coast, Command Tower, Mystic Sanctuary, Skycloud Expanse, Spire of Industry, Port Town, Buried Ruin, Cephalid Coliseum, Blast Zone, Reliquary Tower (no max hand size, matters since this deck draws a lot), Urza's Saga (tutors a cheap artifact like Sol Ring or Skullclamp onto the battlefield off its third chapter).\n\n## Budget Philosophy\n\nBuilt to be genuinely competitive without chasing cEDH fast-mana staples. Explicitly passed on Mana Vault, Chrome Mox, Mox Opal, and Force of Will/Negation (too fast, too pricey, not needed at this power level), plus Smothering Tithe, Rhystic Study, and Esper Sentinel-tier \"game changers\" (no honest budget substitute exists, so they're skipped rather than downgraded into something weak). Where a budget swap does hold up without hurting the plan, it's used, see the Budget Swaps table in the main deck note.\n\n## Mulligan / Opening Hand Priorities\n\nLook for early interaction (a counterspell or removal spell), a land or two of each color, and ideally a piece of card selection (Brainstorm, Preordain, Ponder) to smooth out the rest. You don't need combo pieces turn one, the deck is built to survive to the midgame and win from there.\n\n## At the Table\n\nThis deck plays a patient, reactive game. Hold up mana, answer threats, wait for the moment to either go off with the Scepter or grind opponents out on card advantage. It is not a fast deck and it's not looking to combo off turn 4. Expect games to go long, that's the point.\n"}]}
