Overall the mid-level dragons have crazy good value and really pack a punch, quite a step up from the already respectably early dragons.\nThe endgame dragons I chose to include are: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ancient Copper Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hellkite Tyrant"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Incinerator of the Guilty"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Inferno of the Star Mounts"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lathliss, Dragon Queen"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stormscale Scion"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Drakuseth, Maw of Flames"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Utvara Hellkite"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cavern-Hoard Dragon"}},{"insert":". There are really quite a few good red dragons to choose from in all mana cost levels, it was hard to choose which ones to cut out. When there was a dragon that fit the theme of artifacts or treasures or tokens I always chose it over somethings else that might have been bigger size or cheaper, but didn't really gel with the rest of the deck.\nThere is a small token generators theme that I included: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragonmaster Outcast"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lathliss, Dragon Queen"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Utvara Hellkite"}},{"insert":" and technically "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldlust Triad"}},{"insert":" creates dragon tokens as well. \n\nActually playing the deck totally centers around getting the commander "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smaug the Magnificent"}},{"insert":" out and generating treasures as fast as possible. Smaug's ability to deal damage to anything equal to the number of your treasures is a big deal, and this deck tries to abuse it as much as possible. I rarely actually use the treasures for mana, instead I focus on making a treasure hoard and killing other threats with the damage, and later on I can start threatening players with it directly. Not to say I never use them for mana, but it has to be worth it for a nice payoff.\nOverall it's a pretty fun deck to play, that is a reasonable speed and power level, I think it pretty much embodies a mid tier bracket 3 deck. The only win con is by smashing faces with dragons. There are some weaknesses (enchantments) but if you can overlook them you can have a pretty good time in an average play group.\n"}]}

Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"I wanted to make a mono-red commander deck focused on Dragons for a while, but I never really found a commander I liked for it. The Hobbit set changed that, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smaug the Magnificent"}},{"insert":" is a great dragon, and it even added another theme to the deck that I dabbled in before, it being treasure tokens. With that all settled it was time to decide on which dragons to include and all the other support to go with them.\nI decided that since I was already going for treasures I would also include a good number of mana artifacts too. Things like: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mox Jasper"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sol Ring"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Arcane Signet"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cursed Mirror"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragonstorm Globe"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon's Hoard"}},{"insert":" and of course "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Throne of Eldraine"}},{"insert":".\nThen there's the treasure token generators: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smaug the Magnificent"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Collector's Vault"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Daily Bugle Newspaper"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stark Industries Executive"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Generous Plunderer"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pain Distributor"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Professional Face-Breaker"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rose Room Treasurer"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Swashbuckler Extraordinaire"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Patron of the Arts"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Atsushi, the Blazing Sky"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bonehoard Dracosaur"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ganax, Astral Hunter"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldlust Triad"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldspan Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Spiteful Banditry"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rain of Riches"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Misty Mountains Cold"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Big Score"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Unexpected Windfall"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fountainport"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mines of Moria"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon-Cursed Halls"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Reaver Cleaver"}},{"insert":" can be a very scary treasure generator. This card "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Coin of Mastery"}},{"insert":" is a dual purpose generator for treasures and +1/+1 counters., it combos with all the mana rocks that are in here too. This is not technically a treasure generator, but it amplifies the generators and can be very good: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Xorn"}},{"insert":". \nBesides the basic mountains, there's a few lands in here to spice things up a little bit, like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maelstrom of the Spirit Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Haven of the Spirit Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Myriad Landscape"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Treasure Vault"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fountainport"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mines of Moria"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon-Cursed Halls"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"War Room"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Great Furnace"}},{"insert":".\nOther than the mana rocks, other good artifacts I felt needed to be in here are: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ruby Medallion"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hazoret's Monument"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Vanquisher's Banner"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Chronicle of Victory"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Skullclamp"}},{"insert":", all forthe speed or card draw or advantage they can generate.\nThen we get to the meat and potatoes of this deck which is the dragons that made the cut. First there's the dragon support cards, like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragonspeaker Shaman"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dracogenesis"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Haven of the Spirit Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maelstrom of the Spirit Dragon"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragon Tempest"}},{"insert":" is a very good card that I'm always happy to draw and play immediately.\nMoving on to the cheaper dragons that can come out early, first are dragons even though they are small and don't fly: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Patron of the Arts"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Swashbuckler Extraordinaire"}},{"insert":" then these are cheap and are good value: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gadrak, the Crown-Scourge"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Atsushi, the Blazing Sky"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Parapet Thrasher"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Opportunistic Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Thunderbreak Regent"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Thundermane Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Vengeful Ancestor"}},{"insert":". All of these dragons are very useful early and can put the pressure on.\nThen the mid level dragons are things like: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bonehoard Dracosaur"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragonhawk, Fate's Tempest"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ganax, Astral Hunter"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldlust Triad"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldspan Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scourge of Valkas"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Terror of the Peaks"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Thundermaw Hellkite"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Twinflame Tyrant"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Wrathful Red Dragon"}},{"insert":" can be a game ender when you have a bunch of dragons out and cast "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Blasphemous Act"}},{"insert":" (also "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Spiteful Banditry"}},{"insert":" but a lot of mana is needed). Overall the mid-level dragons have crazy good value and really pack a punch, quite a step up from the already respectably early dragons.\nThe endgame dragons I chose to include are: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ancient Copper Dragon"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hellkite Tyrant"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Incinerator of the Guilty"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Inferno of the Star Mounts"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lathliss, Dragon Queen"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stormscale Scion"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Drakuseth, Maw of Flames"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Utvara Hellkite"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cavern-Hoard Dragon"}},{"insert":". There are really quite a few good red dragons to choose from in all mana cost levels, it was hard to choose which ones to cut out. When there was a dragon that fit the theme of artifacts or treasures or tokens I always chose it over somethings else that might have been bigger size or cheaper, but didn't really gel with the rest of the deck.\nThere is a small token generators theme that I included: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dragonmaster Outcast"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lathliss, Dragon Queen"}},{"insert":" "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Utvara Hellkite"}},{"insert":" and technically "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldlust Triad"}},{"insert":" creates dragon tokens as well. \n\nActually playing the deck totally centers around getting the commander "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smaug the Magnificent"}},{"insert":" out and generating treasures as fast as possible. Smaug's ability to deal damage to anything equal to the number of your treasures is a big deal, and this deck tries to abuse it as much as possible. I rarely actually use the treasures for mana, instead I focus on making a treasure hoard and killing other threats with the damage, and later on I can start threatening players with it directly. Not to say I never use them for mana, but it has to be worth it for a nice payoff.\nOverall it's a pretty fun deck to play, that is a reasonable speed and power level, I think it pretty much embodies a mid tier bracket 3 deck. The only win con is by smashing faces with dragons. There are some weaknesses (enchantments) but if you can overlook them you can have a pretty good time in an average play group.\n"}]}
