Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"Hello! This is my entry for the Spider-Man pre-con contest based around "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Green Goblin, Revenant"}},{"insert":". This deck centers around discarding your own cards to swing the game in your favor. The deck tries to balance having ample cards in your hand to discard, causing cards you have in play to trigger game changing abilities, with ways to use your graveyard to your advantage. I tried to build the deck as if it was a pre-constructed deck, using a self-imposed budget of $200 (at the time of building) as shown in the Tolarian Community College video and looking back at other Rakdos pre-constructed decks for card examples and land inclusions. \n\nThe cards I included fall into three different categories. 1: Ways to discard cards from your hand, so that whenever "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Green Goblin, Revenant"}},{"insert":" attacks, you can draw a TON of cards. 2: Payoffs for discarding your own cards. 3: Ways to reuse the cards that you discard, so that we are not just discarding cards to discard them, we are discarding them to make them better!\n\n1: Ways to discard cards: The deck features many ways to discard your cards for value. We want to try and discard them prior to swinging in with our commander to get the most out of our turn. The simplest way is through looting and rummaging effects (discarding our cards to draw more cards.) Traditional draw effects like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Faithless Looting"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bitter Reunion"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Romantic Rendezvous"}},{"insert":" allow us to get rid of cards we may not need right now to draw new ones. This controlled card selection lets us set up for future turns with ease. We can spread this ability to the table with wheel effects like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Snort"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Reforge the Soul"}},{"insert":" to discard multiple cards at once, then draw that many again when we attack. We can also discard cards to other effects like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bitter Triumph"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lightning Axe"}},{"insert":" to remove problematic creatures, and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Key to the City"}},{"insert":" to allow for safer combats. There are also cards with Cycling in the deck, discarding themselves to draw new cards. Lands like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ash Barrens"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Canyon Slough"}},{"insert":" can be cycled to draw new cards when we have too many lands (precons tend to have a lot of them normally), while "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Oliphaunt"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Troll of Khazad-dûm"}},{"insert":" can be cycled away to help fix our mana. \n\n2: Payoffs for Discarding: There are plenty of cards that benefit from us discarding our own cards. Cards like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Faith of the Devoted"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Magmakin Artillerist"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Spider-Man, New Champion"}},{"insert":" dish out damage to the table as we discard through our deck. I was thinking of including "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Brallin, Skyshark Rider"}},{"insert":" in here, but figured it would be strange for a pre-con to have a \"partner's with\" card without the other partner, but its a nice upgrade! A bit on the expensive side due to standard play, the deck has "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Monument to Endurance"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cool but Rude"}},{"insert":" as discard payoffs and enablers. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cryptcaller Chariot"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bladewing, Deathless Tyrant"}},{"insert":" can create an army of tokens during or after the discard process. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Surly Badgersaur"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bone Miser"}},{"insert":", and backup commander "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Green Goblin, Nemesis"}},{"insert":" give us a nice variety of effects based on what we discard, to help shape our board into the threat that we want it to be.\n\n3: Reusing our Discarded Cards: Once we discard our cards, it is important to be able to use them later on, pretty much turning our graveyard into a second hand! There are a few reanimation effects we can use, like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stitch Together"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Animate Dead"}},{"insert":" to return our creatures to play. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Grave Upheaval"}},{"insert":" is a bit on the costly cmc side of reanimation, but it can be cycled early on to help fix our mana, making it a solid include. There are also a few cards with Madness, Mayhem, Flashback, Aftermath, and Escape that we can use from the graveyard or mid-discard. Discarding madness or mayhem creatures like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Shadowgrange Archfiend"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Green Goblin, Back for More"}},{"insert":" can add board pressure while fueling our discard payoffs . Flashing back a "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Faithless Looting"}},{"insert":" or escaping an "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ox of Agonas"}},{"insert":" keeps the discard train rolling. \n\nThe deck is also filled with a nice suite of interaction. The deck has a few targeted removal spells, including "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bedevil"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Chaos Warp"}},{"insert":", along with the aforementioned "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bitter Triumph"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sadistic Slash"}},{"insert":" , as well as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lightning Axe"}},{"insert":". Board wipes like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Game Over"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Blasphemous Act"}},{"insert":" are always useful, as well as thematic wipes like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Nahiri's Wrath"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Malfegor"}},{"insert":" that kill creatures by discarding a bunch of cards, which we can then refill as our commander swings on an emptier board. There are some nice reanimation targets like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Archon of Cruelty"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Abomination, World Ravager"}},{"insert":" to round out the top-end of the deck.\n\nThe mana base is pretty straight forward when compared to past precons. A nice budget list of dual-lands help with mana fixing, with cheaper fetchlands like the new "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Vibrant Cityscape"}},{"insert":" and always welcome reprint of "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fabled Passage"}},{"insert":". Typical mana rocks for the Rakdos colors are included, along with the aforementioned land-cycling cards to find what we need. Cycling lands provide additional discard options in the late game. There are also a few other discard-related lands in the deck. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Takenuma, Abandoned Mire"}},{"insert":" can be discarded from our hand to return our creatures from our graveyard to our hand by it's Channel ability, while "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Geier Reach Sanitarium"}},{"insert":" gets everyone involved in the discard!\n\nWhen I first saw "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Green Goblin, Revenant"}},{"insert":", I thought it would be a fun new take on discarding our own cards for value, drawing a ton of cards to fuel a bunch of fun and under-utilized mechanics. Similar pre-constructed decks like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Anje Falkenrath"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gavi, Nest Warden"}},{"insert":" have similar play-styles, but I think "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Green Goblin, Revenant"}},{"insert":"'s take is similar, yet unique enough to feel different than the pre-cons of the past. Thank you so much for taking the time to check out the deck, hope you enjoyed, and I look forward to playing this when the set releases later this month!\n"}]}
