Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"Hello, Snail (or whoever else might be reading this)! Here’s my entry for your deck-building competition. If you’re interested in some backstory, feel free to read on below; if not, I’ve clearly marked where “the point” begins, which is where the deck analysis starts.\n\nI had just kicked off a two-month solo backpacking trip through Southeast Asia when I watched your video. Traveling alone means I have plenty of downtime, especially when eating or relaxing at night, and I love nothing more than fiddling with deck ideas on my phone. Building decks and taking on challenges is my thing. I discovered Senator Peacock while randomly looking through legendary creatures online, and the character immediately intrigued me—especially since blue is my favorite color. Although I had only 60 hours to put this together, as we say in Norway, “need teaches naked women to spin.” I also tend to avoid looking up EDHREC or similar decks when I’m building, so I have no idea if what I’m doing is unique or a common approach.\n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"The point:"},{"insert":"\nThis deck is, at its core, a $100 budget build. My playgroup allows proxies, so I’ve included some pricier lands to round it out; feel free to remove those if you prefer. I’ve intentionally excluded obvious but boring cards like Sol Ring, the Medallion, Academy Manufactor, and others that tend to draw a lot of attention. The deck takes a slow, grindy, and controlling approach, with several win conditions and a high number of counterspells. Thanks to ample ramp and many artifacts with instant-speed abilities, the counters feel right at home here. Many of them also create tokens or draw cards. Given the deck’s toolbox-like approach, I’ve included plenty of draw and several tutors since the multiple strategies require a steady flow of cards. Around 30-35 cards in the deck can draw, and the commander’s abilities also make it possible to turn artifacts into draw sources when needed.\n\nOne win strategy is Voltron. By sacrificing a clue, you can make Senator Peacock unblockable, equipping it with something like Grafted Exoskeleton (a two-turn clock against one player) or Nettlecyst if you have a lot of artifacts on the board. There are also ways to sacrifice the board (e.g., Arcum Dagsson with Thornbite Staff, Extruder, or Oblivion Stone) and use Terrarion’s soul-cleaving effect to pump the commander or other creatures. Piper Wright synergizes well here too. This strategy can also empower Hangerback Walker, which can be sacrificed for value with outlets like Nyssa of Thrake, boosting your or your opponents’ creatures or gaining additional card draw through Soulclamp. Adding Tangletrove Kelp enables an overrun strategy if the board state allows it. You can combo with artifacts like Ornithopter or another 0-mana artifact, repeatedly sacrificing and re-casting with Emry and untapping through Thornbite Staff, generating infinite triggers for enters-the-battlefield, death, or cast effects, which synergize with Piper Wright, Sai, Master Thopterist, Vedalken Archmage, and Efficient Construction. Mishra’s Bauble fits well here, too, as it can sacrifice itself for free, and several other low-cost artifacts provide great value (e.g., Terrarion, which triggers multiple artifacts, draws two cards, makes a creature unblockable, and filters your mana—great for running unique lands).\nSince Senator Peacock’s abilities allow you to make your opponents’ creatures unblockable too, you can pump their creatures with Extruder or make them unblockable with cards like Flight Spellbomb, adding a unique player dynamic. Another interesting dynamic is the “bomb” loop; you can deal 5 damage to any target with Retribution Wand, using it for either politics or surprise removals. With Esoteric Duplicator, you can retrieve the wand for two mana and bomb something again. The deck includes a lot of artifact tutors, supporting the toolbox approach, including cards like Citanul Flute, which can tutor a creature, and Archmage Ascension, which fits the slow, grindy playstyle. Finally, I’ve added several cards that produce artifact creature tokens, such as Whirler Rogue, which synergizes with the unblockable theme. Forensic Gadgeteer + looping 0-mana artifacts with Emry can be rewarding if you go for the overrun strategy with Tangletrove Kelp. Overall, the deck aims to win by swarming the board, sacrificing artifacts for value, achieving one or more artifact-based combos, or using politics to pit opponents against each other.\n\nThe ramp package aligns with the deck’s theme well. For example, Liquimetal Torque + Sonic Screwdriver make a fun combo, while Five Hundred Year Diary can tap for a ton of mana in the right situations. Sad Robot provides value with its combat trick, blocking, sacrificing, and benefiting from its death trigger. Cards like Midnight Clock and Urza’s Powerstone serve multiple functions, helpful in a deck with several sub-themes, which benefits from cards that fulfill more than one role.\n\nFor card draw, many choices are straightforward. Padeem offers some protection, while Nick Valentine and Nyssa of Thrake align well with the sacrifice theme. Ichor Wellspring is a great example of value in this deck. Glacian helps with digging deeper, while Mishra’s Bauble and Vedalken Archmage contribute excellent combo potential.\n\nPiloting this deck is challenging. Do I play a ramp spell for future gain, or hold up a counter? Do I sacrifice to draw a card now, or save it for an eventual overrun strategy or later value? What’s the priority when tutoring—something for the current board state or a future tool? When is the right time to flood the board? Which value loops should I pursue, and when? Should I help my friends in combat, or not? I love these kinds of questions, which are what make budget blue decks like this a real challenge.\n"}]}
