{"ops":[{"attributes":{"underline":true},"insert":"Mini-Primer for Raff, Weatherlight Stalwart"},{"insert":"\n\nTokens: Human, Human Wizard, pro red Knight, Bird, Bird Illusion, Spirit, Soldier, Food, Goblin, Thopter, Kraken\n\nGameplay Tips:\n\nUse your protection spells to keep your engine pieces, such as Raff, safe. You have a lot of late-game inevitability - there is a lot of recursion in the deck, so you can run your opponents out of resources as long as your card draw remains intact."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"You have a deceptively high number of situational board wipes in the deck: Slaughter the Strong, Engulf the Shore, Fell the Mighty, Spectral Deluge, Dusk/Dawn, and Cyclone Summoner can all remove your opponents' most important pieces on the board while usually leaving the best things on your board intact. Do not be afraid to use these proactively to prune your opponents' value pieces, even if you don't think you're in danger of dying yet. Note: two of your board wipes, Engulf the Shore and Spectral Deluge, are dependent on the number of Islands you control. Consider playing Islands first, if you don't need the white mana immediately."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"There is a lot of recursion in the deck. There are a full four creatures (Archaeomancer, Salvager of Secrets, Mnemonic Wall, and Scholar of Ages) that can pull instants and sorceries back from your graveyard. Late to Dinner and Resurrection can recur creatures, and Not Forgotten can recur anything, with a slight delay. The goal is to set up a loop with one of the spell recursion creatures and a blink spell. This loop can do as little as providing an \"invincible\" blocker (block with the recursion creature, then blink it with an instant, returning the instant), to completely locking people out of the game. If you can get Scholar of the Ages on the board, every time you blink it you net yourself an extra instant or sorcery. Or, with any of the double-blinkers like Ghostly Flicker, Displace, or Lae'Zel's Acrobatics, you can start recycling other ETBs every time you blink a recursion creature."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Generally, you want to sit back and not be aggressive early. Use your removal to keep people in check, and keep your hand full with Raff's draw ability. Whenever possible, you want to use the draw ability. This will require a lot of bodies on the field, so prioritize cheap early creature and token generation."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nWin Conditions:\n\n1) go wide, and pump with Raff's ability: With a sufficiently wide board, Raff's ability can add a lot of damage output. Remember, you can always declare an attack with some small creatures, then wait to see if your opponents block. If they don't, you can elect to save your mana for later and just get in a little damage. In the early game, you will usually want to leave your creatures untapped so they can be used for Raff's draw ability. Note: Ominous Seas is a stand-out win condition. With how many cards you will be drawing, it can easily make 3 or more krakens during a game if it comes down early enough. If you draw it late, you can always cycle it away.\n\n2) recursion loops: As mentioned above, there is a lot of recursion in the deck. This can easily set up loops where you more or less lock opponents out of the game. For example: cast Cloudshift on Scholar of the Ages. Scholar of the Ages returns Cloudshift and Alchemist's Retrieval to your hand. Cast Cyclone Summoner from your hand. It bounces pretty much everything except your board. Cast Alchemist's Retrieval to return Cyclone Summoner to your hand. Rinse and repeat - your opponents won't be able to keep anything on the board. There a many possible permutations of this, but in the late game you will usually be able to find a way to repeatedly stop your opponents from doing anything significant.\n\n3) Triskaidekaphile: Although a fairly fragile alternate win condition, Triskaidekaphile has synergy with Raff. First, Triskaidekaphile is a Wizard so there is some incidental Wizard synergy with other cards such as Cyclone Summoner, Sage's Dousing, and Riptide Laboratory. More importantly, Raff will draw a ton of cards. Once you get to the magic number 13, Raff can help keep you there. Even if someone tries to remove Triskaidekaphile and you need to expend a card to stop it, Raff will allow you to draw a replacement at no extra mana cost.\n\nParting thoughts:\n\nI have included a maybeboard with a variety of other inexpensive cards to consider when upgrading. There are several different directions you could take this deck in, including Wizard tribal and spellslinger. At heart, Raff is not about coming out of the gates swinging and winning quickly. He rewards patient play and careful threat assessment. But, if you play your cards right (ba-dum-tss), Raff can be one of those decks where it seems like you \"always have the answer.\" I hope you enjoy it, and Happy Holidays!\n"}]}
