Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"The Choose A Background mechanic is a neat and flavorful customization option that lets us add a color and subtheme to any Baldur's Gate commander with said mechanic. Ganax, Astral Hunter is one such commander, though his obvious draconic abilities are often paired with Acolyte of Bahamut. However, I liked the idea of creating an absurd pile of Treasures and as such, Feywild Visitor was a significantly more appealing option for my background of choice.\n\nOn top of that, this particular build was to fill in a specific niche for me - a fair Bracket 3 deck that I could play when I didn't want to think too hard and did not want to shuffle my deck. That's right, there is not a single card in here that requires me to pick up my deck, search or shuffle outside of the first shuffle and any mulligans before the game begins. But before we dive into the gameplan, let's break down Feywild Visitor since its wording matters:\n\nCommander creatures you own have \"Whenever one or more non-token creatures deal combat damage to a player, you create a 1/1 Faerie Dragon creature token with Flying.\"\nOk, so a couple of things to note:\n\nThe ability in quotes is granted ONLY to our commander; in this case Ganax, Astral Hunter. We will not be making any tokens with just Feywild Visitor and any other creature. Ganax has to be present. However, Roaming Throne will cause this ability to trigger twice while Ganax is on board.\n\nWhile Ganax is around, we have to hit opponents with combat damage dealt by non-token creatures. But because of the way the card is worded, sending multiple creatures at one opponent will only result in one Faerie Dragon token. Instead, we should try to hit all three opponents during combat so that we create tokens off of each of them taking combat damage.\n\nFurthermore, Double Strike on an opponent will actually get us two Faerie Dragon tokens, since each hit is a separate instance of the Feywild Visitor ability triggering. This is why the deck is running Swashbuckler Extraordinaire. If we can double strike all three opponents during combat then that will be a total of 6 tokens. That is usually the ceiling but if you choose to run extra combat cards like Scourge of the Throne or Hellkite Charger then of course you can make even more.\n\nGanax, Astral Hunter is much less complicated. Whenever a Dragon hits our board, we get a Treasure. That's it, beautifully simple. Feywild Visitor along with our other dragons in the 99 will trigger Ganax constantly, piling up treasure after treasure to the point where we will have more mana than we know what to do with. But that's fine, because we really don't need to be doing anything beyond Play giant fire-breathing lizards and burn everything to the ground.\n\nIt really is that simple of a gameplan. Feywild Visitor can be played before Ganax and it's no problem if we choose to do that, but with the ramp package this deck is running it's not uncommon for us to be ahead of curve and get Ganax into play before Feywild Visitor. The order really doesn't matter, but protecting Ganax throughout the game is key.\n\nThe deck has a sizable counterspell package (I count 14 pieces of instant-speed stack interaction). These should usually be saved for either Ganax or protecting one of our really impactful dragons such as Ancient Copper Dragon. Really there are very few creatures in Magic that will give dragons a hard time, so these counterspells are usually needed to protect them from removal spells and abilities.\n\nFor any resistance our opponents manage to put up, we can just burn them to ashes with things like Balefire Dragon, Mordant Dragon, Glorybringer and Smaug the Magnificent.\n\nAnd on a final note - the deck can apply a lot of pressure with just a few dragons on board. There is no need to vomit our whole hand onto the board and overextend just because we have the mana to do so. If we have no follow-up in hand and an opponent manages to resolve a board wipe, it's going to feel really bad. We would be in a much better position if we held resources in hand and use our accumulated pile of treasure to rebuild after a wipe. That's the key to success with this deck - don't overextend, try to attack all opponents for maximum Feywild Visitor value and tactically snipe away enemy creatures with burn abilities to ensure zero possible resistance. All while we deal evasive, flying damage over and over until we are the only ones left standing!\n\nPros, Cons & Power Level\nPros, Cons & Power Level\n✅ Pros\n\nThis build is beautifully simple. In fact, it was deliberately built to never have to search and shuffle whatsoever. No tutors, not even fetch lands. Your turns will be short and simple.\n\nIt feels very fair in Bracket 3, but it can be easily upgraded to Bracket 4. See the Upgrades section of this Primer to see some suggestions.\n\nGanax and Feywild feed into each other to make a very satisfying gameplay loop. Play dragons → create Treasure. Attack with dragons → create mini dragons → even more treasure. It enables itself while also rewarding itself.\n\n❌ Cons\n\nThe lack of tutors can also be a downside, since this build relies entirely on the luck of the draw to make sure it can interact with the board and push the gameplan. Again, this was a deliberate choice to make it feel fair and not too oppressive against other Bracket 3 decks.\n\nIt's heavily reliant on creatures to win the game. Getting repeatedly board wiped can feel bad. That's why it is running a sizeable counter spell package to help keep its dragon buddies alive.\n\n☢️ Power Level\n\nThis deck is casual. It has no combos or \"I win\" cards like Hellkite Tyrant. It is about as fair as it gets.\n\nUsing WotC's bracket system, this deck is a 3.\n\nPackages\nPackages\nRamp (21)\nSarkhan, Fireblood, Sol Ring, Arcane Signet, Fellwar Stone, Izzet Signet, Talisman of Creativity, Thought Vessel, Carnelian Orb of Dragonkind and Dragon's Hoard all produce mana on their own.\n\nSarkhan, Dragon Ascendant, Ganax, Astral Hunter, Swashbuckler Extraordinaire, Galazeth Prismari, Smaug the Magnificent, Goldlust Triad, Goldspan Dragon and Ancient Copper Dragon all produce Treasure tokens that can be exchanged for mana.\n\nDragonlord's Servant, Dragonspeaker Shaman, Sarkhan, Soul Aflame and Urza's Incubator reduce the casting cost of our spells.\n\nRemoval & Interaction (33)\nInvasion of Tarkir, Smaug the Magnificent, Glorybringer, Lozhan, Dragons' Legacy, Scourge of Valkas, Terror of the Peaks, Mordant Dragon, Niv-Mizzet, Dracogenius, Balefire Dragon, Drakuseth, Maw of Flames, Shatterskull Smashing and Dragon Tempest can all deal burn damage to creatures.\n\nDefiant Thundermaw turns all of our dragons into repeatable Shocks.\n\nMagmatic Hellkite and Sundering Eruption can destroy a problematic land when it enters.\n\nParapet Thrasher can destroy an artifact with its triggered ability.\n\nSteel Hellkite can destroy permanents based on how much mana we pay into its triggered ability.\n\nCyclonic Rift can bounce a single permanent or multiple if we overload it.\n\nOtawara, Soaring City can also bounce certain permanents if we use its Channel ability.\n\nChilling Screech, Psionic Pulse, Transcendent Dragon, An Offer You Can't Refuse, Stubborn Denial, Swan Song, Counterspell, Mana Drain, Negate, Silumgar's Scorn, Fierce Guardianship, Sink into Stupor and Deflecting Swat can all interact with spells on the stack.\n\nEssence Flux can be cast in response to removal to blink one of our creatures and fizzle the removal spell/ability.\n\nCard Draw & Card Advantage (12)\nEnduring Curiosity and Reconnaissance Mission draw us cards when our creatures deal combat damage to opponents.\n\nFrostcliff Siege sort of does a similar job except it only draws 1 card for every opponent hit during combat.\n\nIymrith, Desert Doom draws a card whenever he connects with combat damage.\n\nNiv-Mizzet, Dracogenius does so whenever he deals any kind of damage to an opponent.\n\nFirkraag, Cunning Instigator draws us a card whenever a goaded creature deals damage to one of our opponents. Firkraag can Goad creatures by himself but Vengeful Ancestor can also help out.\n\nShimmer Dragon can tap two artifacts in exchange for card draw.\n\nDragon's Hoard collects counters as we play dragons and we can exchange one of those counters for card draw.\n\nSkullclamp can be attached to one of our Faerie Dragon tokens and since they are little 1/1s, they will die immediately and we get to draw 2 cards in exchange.\n\nFiery Islet can be sacrificed to draw a card.\n\nParapet Thrasher can impulse draw a card, allowing us a chance to play it before our turn ends.\n\nThundermane Dragon lets us cast certain creature spells off the top of our deck, functionally serving as card advantage.\n\nRoiling Dragonstorm, Loch Dragon and Sarkhan, Fireblood can draw us cards but with the caveat of having to discard as well. I'm not including them in the count since this isn't technically card advantage but they are worth mentioning since they can help us churn through dead cards in hand for hopefully some better ones.\n\nUpgrades & Adjustments\nUpgrades & Adjustments\nLet's get the elephant out of the room - the \"no tutor\" thing was a deliberate design decision so that I could relax at Bracket 3 tables and never have to search/shuffle. However, tutoring is a necessary evil in Bracket 4, so I would highly recommend the following -\n\nMaelstrom of the Spirit Dragon - a tutor on demand for any dragon you might want.\n\nScalding Tarn and Prismatic Vista - reliable mana fixing especially in a 2-color deck.\n\nMagda, Brazen Outlaw - exchange any 5 treasures for any dragon straight to the field at instant speed? Yes please.\n\nBeyond that, I'd recommend two of the more impactful dragons that I deliberately left out:\n\nAncient Silver Dragon - ridiculous amount of card draw and no more hand size limit after just one trigger.\n\nHellkite Tyrant - an instant \"I win\" button if we have at least 20 artifacts on our upkeep. Bonus points if we tutor it at instant speed with Magda, Brazen Outlaw so opponent's must react on the stack or just lose the game.\n\nAnd finally, there are some combo options I would recommend that are on-theme:\n\nAstral Dragon and Cursed Mirror - these two just go infinite with each other and result in an infinite number of 3/3 Dragon tokens with Haste.\n\nAstral Dragon and Machine God's Effigy - also results in infinite dragon tokens but they won't have Haste so we pray we can make it to our next turn OR just have a burn damage dealer when a dragon enters (choice of Scourge of Valkas, Dragon Tempest or Terror of the Peaks).\n\nYou can also add Fabricate and Whir of Invention to tutor for the artifact pieces of these combos. Magda, Brazen Outlaw can do that as well.\n\nI'd recommend Muddle the Mixture while you're at it, since it's a useful counterspell but also has the option to Transmute for a 2-cmc card, useful if you want to fetch something like Lightning Greaves for protection or Dragon Tempest for team-wide Haste. Or just hold onto it and use it as a counter spell.\n\nFinally, several of the 5 and 6-cost dragons you see in my list are customizable. For example, I personally like sniping away creatures with burn damage so I value things like Glorybringer and Mordant Dragon. However, you may prefer having more bodies on board and increasing your damage output, so you might prefer swapping these for Lathliss, Dragon Queen and Stormscale Scion. That's perfectly acceptable! In fact, most of the dragon lineup in this deck is personal preference and you can customize it to your liking.\n\nBudget Options\nBudget Options\nI've put together a $100 budget version of this deck which you can check out here. However, if you'd like to make budget adjustments to this list instead, here would be my suggestions:\n\nLands\n\nThe quickest way to cut cost is to replace the expensive dual lands with budget ones that come in tapped but still produce the same colors. For example, Steam Vents becomes Molten Tributary. Take a look through the list of Izzet Lands here and make any swaps you want to make.\n\nOtawara, Soaring City → basic Island\n\nCavern of Souls → Maelstrom of the Spirit Dragon\n\nSorceries\n\nShatterskull Smashing → basic Mountain\nInstants\n\nSwan Song → Strix Serenade\n\nCyclonic Rift → Resculpt or Blasphemous Act\n\nMana Drain → Dispelling Exhale\n\nDeflecting Swat → Untimely Malfunction or Return the Favor\n\nFierce Guardianship → Three Steps Ahead or Lofty Denial\n\nSink into Stupor → basic Island\n\nArtifacts\n\nUrza's Incubator → Herald's Horn\nCreatures\n\nRoaming Throne → Nimbleclaw Adept or Renari, Merchant of Marvels\n\nSmaug the Magnificent → Voracious Bibliophile or Thunderbreak Regent\n\nGoldspan Dragon → Wrathful Red Dragon or Obsidian Charmaw\n\nTerror of the Peaks → Bonehoard Dracosaur\n\nAncient Copper Dragon → Scourge of the Throne, Hellkite Tyrant or Stormscale Scion\n\nBalefire Dragon → Tyrant's Familiar or Lathliss, Dragon Queen\n"}]}
