Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"My submission for the September contest\n\nThe main kindred I am trying to support is thopters, but specifically thopters from artificers. This is so Cid the secret commander can help boost them for some artifical wing based combat\n\nBut why Hinata? Well there are a series of draw/discard spells that say target player - allowing us to use the commander as a significant ramp source. Combined with some very juicy multi-target spells that scale well, we can focus on essentially cycling through the deck to aim for a few artificers in the graveyard while digging for some thopters to hit the field and keep our hand filled with answers, all while waiting to drop our secret Cid and swing big. \n\nMany of the thopter producing options are repeatable or have a secondary effect that can be of benefit, trying to optimize card options with so many moving parts. Some of these are single use but can be mana efficient (Maverick thopterist) or explosive (Hangarback Walker). I have included a few native thopters for their baseline good abilities, alongside some potential chop shop antics. This is not a go wide deck though, this is about making a couple of thopters and going tall! Keeping some source back to rebuild is adviseable, and don't be afraid to sacrifice/discard some artificers to help further the cause, they can buff your thopters from the graveyard! With the card velocity package, the aim is that you will see more soon!\n\nSpeaking of going tall, we do need a Cid on the field, so we do need to hold one up some of the time, but have Feldon and Lorehold Archivist as backup for the ones we discard. This is definitely the biggest weakness of the deck and the crux of balancing the playstyle. In playtesting so far I have found 10 Cids to be optimal. Initially I was aiming for 15 (one for each printing) but I found I had too many Cids and not enough payoffs. Under 10 and I start panicking when I don't find one. The aim is to see a couple to hold, then play one once you have a couple of thopters and a few artificers in the graveyard without giving away the gameplan (a truly secret secret commander). This can lead to quite the swing in attention when your 1/1 flyers turn into 5/5s or more out of nowhere and you start taking names and lifetotals.\n\nTo help augment this idea, ma,skwood nexus and ancroaching mycosynth are here as win-con augments. Maskwood massively boosts the power output from Cid and lets the thopters buff themselve, taking on the form of their creators. Pinochio becomes the Guiseppe if you will... Encroaching allows for all your creatures benefit from the buff from Cid, allowing Hinata to become a serious threat as a flampling commander. Both are tutorable from Arcum (who should always get encroaching first as he then allows you to get any non-creature permanent from your deck). Encroaching also buffs Leaonardo da Vinci (the Father of thopters) and goblin welder. Encroaching is easily the MVP of the deck when you get the chance to play it, but I didn't want to rely on it every game.\n\nThe mana ramp base is 2MV artifact and as such carries the normal risks of being blown out, but allows for T3 Hinata to start the chain of draw, and many of the draw spells have some early game removal associated to help balance out our slower start. The only 3 mana ramp is Firdoch cave, but it helps up the artificer count so its acceptable. Liquimetal torque also helps Hinata go full "},{"attributes":{"strike":true},"insert":"beast "},{"insert":"thopter mode. Hinata itself can provide a lot of the mana for chaining a couple of draw spells, or keeping some high MV interaction hidden from opponents. Casting Sublime epiphany for UU, or an Icy Blast to take out the aggro go wide tokens player for a round is far too fun sometimes.\n\nRounding out the deck is a land base attempting to combine some mana fixing, some recursion (Academy Ruins and Ishgard) and some artifacts to help round out the theme. The blinkmoth/inkmoth lands are bonus flyers to help round out the kill, Inkmoth in particular being nasty sometimes., but can be emergency buff blockers if needed after a big swing. In magical christmas land, Hinata empowered Danse of the Manse to return all those artifact lands as 4/4 creatures to be buffed by Cid is probably my favourite play I have achieved.\n\n\n"}]}
