Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"Deep in the irradiated desert, hidden from ferocious dinosaurs and surrounded by devoted druids, stands a sentient tree. Their name is Harold and Bob, First Numens, and they want to die. \nHarold and Bob's Big Boy Dino Club is a dedicated mono green ramp deck that takes the entire premise of commander and flips it on it's head. With this deck, you actually want your commander to die. Once he does, he becomes an enchant forest spell that allows the forest he enchants to tap for three mana. We're going to break that ability to summon huge dinosaurs to devour our opponents faces. There are a few ways to send Harold and Bob to the great beyond. \nCOMBAT\nFirst, there is always combat. Harold and Bob have vigilance and reach, so you can send him into battle and still have him available to deter attackers. He rarely gets blocked, but if he does, you'll get a free mana boost.\nSACRIFICE \nIn green, there are several cards that let you sacrifice a creature for an effect. Life's Legacy and Momentous Fall let you draw cards, Eldritch Evolution and Natural Order let you tutor a creature onto the battlefield, and Primal Growth and Flare of Cultivation let you ramp. Our lands also put in work, with Lazotep Quarry, Miren, the Moaning Well, High Market, and Disciple of Freyalise letting you sacrifice cards for an effect. \nFIGHT SPELLS\nSometimes, Harold and Bob choose violence. Spells like Bushwhack, Tail Swipe, Fight for the Throne, and Inscription of Abundance help Harold and Bob shuffle off the mortal coil while hopefully taking someone with them on the way out. If all else fails, you can target him with Beast Within and get a beast out of the deal. These spells also turn into removal in the late game once you've summoned your Dinos. \nRAMP\nIn addition to our commander, we're going to need quite a bit of ramp to hit our dinos early and often. We're running 20 ramp spells, so I'm only going to call out a few here. We start with Arbor Elf, who let's you untap the land Harold and Bob is enchanting, then ramp into Selvala, Heart of the Wilds, who let's to add upwards of 12 mana once you've played out a dino or two. Map the Frontier provides either basics or deserts, and our deck includes a small desert package to make use of it. We can fetch Lazetop Quarry for a sac outlet, Scavenger Grounds for graveyard hate, or Arid Archway to bounce one of our 5 MDFC's to hand. Lastly, Regal Behemoth and Virtue of Strength double and triple your mana respectively. \nCARD DRAW\nDespite being mono green, this deck is deceptively good at drawing cards. We start early with Gaea's Blessing, Up the Beanstalk and Garruk's Uprising, before drawing huge grips with Vaultborn Tyrant and The Great Henge. My favorite though is Lifestream's Blessing. Once foretold, this spell can draw you up to 12 cards and gain you 20-30 life, all on your opponents turn. \nINTERACTION\nIn addition to our fight spells, several of our dinos also fight when they enter play. In particular, Apex Altisaur is secretly your board wipe. In conjunction with cards like Heroic Intervention or Smuggler's Surprise, he can fight the entire board, leaving only your creatures standing. Ram Through makes a great finisher, allowing you deal the final points of damage . \nMANA\nFor our lands, we take full advantage of being monogreen to use a wide range of utility lands. We start with 18 forests, since Harold and Bob can only enchant forests. Then we include that aforementioned 5 MDFC's and three cycling lands to add to our card draw. Bonder's Enclave and Mariposa's Military Base also let us draw without using a spell slot, and work wonders with Seedborn Muse. Blighted Woodland, Castle Garenbrig, and Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx ramp us even more, while Boseiju, Who Endures adds to our interaction. \nDINO CLUB\nThat leaves us with our Dinos, and we've got all the greatest hits. Both Ghaltas are here, as are Polyraptor (great with fight spells!) and Carnage Tyrant. We even dip our toes into the marvel universe for Spider-Rex, Daring Dino, Sauron, Dino Devote, and Devil Dinosaur. It's not uncommon to have greater than 20 power on the board while everyone else is still setting up. \n\nMany of the cards in the deck serve dual roles, and thanks to all the multimodal spells, you're never without options. This deck draws cards like blue, gains life like white, sacs creatures and tutors like black and deals damage like red. While simple on the surface, there are dozens of tiny combos and synergies worked in that take time to learn and master. The best part is this deck is highly customizable, both for playstyles and budget. While this deck weighs in at $800-900, that's mostly due to a handful of cards, such as The Great Henge and Nykthos, Shrine to Nix. And if you don't like dinosaurs, you can always swap them out for elementals or wurms, two of my other favorites. Happy Beatings! \n"}]}
