Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"For the September 2026 challenge, I put together this cascade-centered deck using "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty"}},{"insert":" to support an Eldrazi Kindred theme. \n\nImoti synergizes with the build on all fronts, some of which are not immediately obvious. I'll start with the ways that they generally line up, then get to the more interesting and fun synergies at play. \n\nTo start, there's the ramp. Eldrazi decks are always looking for solid ramp because they are so expensive and can be risky cards to play. While Imoti doesn't provide ramp directly, he (she?) also calls for it by being a commander that focuses on higher mana value plays. Furthermore, the green/blue color combo perfectly sets the stage for unrivaled mana support and color options within the Eldrazi archetype. This paves the way for some pieces you wouldn't see in a colorless Eldrazi list, like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Descendants' Path"}},{"insert":" giving you free Eldrazi casts (which trigger Imoti's cascade). The color choices also allow us some of the blue and/or green Eldrazi (though most of them are devoid), which opens up some great synergies I'll mention below. \n\nThe main idea is of course to ramp hard and start cascading as soon as possible. It's a simple plan that delivers massive value when executed well. The build features various ways to \"cheat\" out valuable cascades, such as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Anticausal Vestige"}},{"insert":" warp cost, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Nulldrifter"}},{"insert":" evoke cost, and a whole slew of emerge cards that can keep your cascade chain rolling for cheap. The emerge cards are another aspect that make the color choices shine here, and the emerge mechanic synergizes very well with cascade. The judges are probably already aware, but I should mention that warp, evoke, and emerge all circumvent paying the regular mana cost of a card "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"while still granting the full benefit of the mana value for the cascade effect. "},{"insert":"Now that's value! It's worth mentioning too that "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty"}},{"insert":" has cascade itself, which is extremely likely to contribute an extra 2-4 cost card to your setup when you play it. There's also "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hand of Emrakul"}},{"insert":" , who can cheat himself out by utilizing the "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eldrazi Spawn"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eldrazi Scion"}},{"insert":" created by the cheaper Eldrazi cards, as well as the pure ramp aspect of having so many Eldrazi spawns at your disposal to wind up a genuine cast of one of the big boys. On the subject of Eldrazi Spawns and Scions, these are doing a little more for you than just ramping. There are some 16 cards that offer these spawns that sacrifice for mana, and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Path of Annihilation"}},{"insert":" / "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Elven Chorus"}},{"insert":" allow you to tap them for mana instead of having to sacrifice them, turning them into permanent mana dorks. These little guys give you some bonus insurance and, importantly, some bonus continuity within your cascade chains. Hitting an Eldrazi (even a cheap one) with your cascade chain that gives you spawns or scions can give you the mana needed to set off an entire other cascade chain, which can lead to powerful combos. At worst, the tokens help sustain you, but at best they enable your big plays. \n\nSpeaking of the big boys, let's talk about why we picked the ones that we did. It is well known that it can be risky to play such expensive cards, so in the process of building a functional deck with a very high curve, one has to take steps to protect the value. In the case of our big expensive Eldrazi, that means prioritizing the ones that give us "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"effects on cast. "},{"insert":"In the first place, we have minimal control in order to minimize interference with the cascade chains, so we have to be prepared to encounter a reasonable degree of interaction from our opponents with little to no response. With that said, there is still that minimal amount of control to prevent the deck from being locked out in niche situations where you need to remove a critical enchantment or artifact or counter a critical spell. So some of the big boys will be removed, countered, etcetera, but even then they will provide massive value. Almost every card of mana value 6+ contains a \"when you cast this spell\" ability, with the few that don't having an ETB or exceptional ability. Combine that with the fact that each of those spells trigger "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty"}},{"insert":" cascade, and you're getting more than you pay for without the creature even hitting the battlefield. If things do get bad despite all that value, there are a couple asymmetric board wipes to turn to in case of emergency: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cyclonic Rift"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"All Is Dust"}},{"insert":". Typically though, the best defense for this deck is steamrolling with big Eldrazi doing big things. \n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Now we get to the really fun synergies. "},{"insert":"There are a lot of basic synergies like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Glaring Fleshraker"}},{"insert":" pumping out "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eldrazi Spawn"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Path of Annihilation"}},{"insert":" / "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Elven Chorus"}},{"insert":" perpetuating the use of those spawns, but the true potential of the combo is what comes after you have that mana at your disposal. "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"This is where Imoti starts to pop off with the Eldrazi."},{"insert":" When playing 7+ mana value spells, you have the potential to combo cascade by cascading into another 6+ cost spell and re-triggering Imoti's ability. In typical cascade fashion, you're always going for the most expensive one first in hopes of getting a multi-cascade chain. Bringing us back to emerge, if you have any single body out (not Imoti becuase you want him to stick around for the combo), you can often play a great number of cards for a laughably low cost. Taking this a step further, one of the most powerful cards in the 99 is "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Zhulodok, Void Gorger"}},{"insert":", whose ability will activate in tandem with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty"}},{"insert":" ability, resulting in a 2-card combo that gives all 7+ mana value colorless spells (which is all but 1 of them, totalling 22) triple cascade. This particular combo has the potential to play most of the spells in the deck at once by casting a single spell once the combo is active. Just imagine casting "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rise of the Eldrazi"}},{"insert":" with this combo active--every spell you flip into is eligible for the original cascade (triple cascade 12), and Imoti / Zhulodok's effects will still apply to the spells that you cascade into, allowing you to cascade a great number of times from that single cast. Did they counter Rise of the Eldrazi? Doesn't matter, you still have triple cascade 12. Did they stifle cascade? Well, you still have 2 more cascade 12 that will branch off into more cascades. It's a glorious combo with very little that can prevent it from happening once it's set up. This kind of interplay between the commander and the Eldrazi is a big part of what I believe embodies the spirit of this challenge. Of course, it also includes a lot of what you would typically see in a tribal setup, like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Herald's Horn"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Realmwalker"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Cavern of Souls"}},{"insert":", etcetera, but that's to be expected. Some cards are just needed to help the deck function. That's why you'll see cards like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rhystic Study"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Swan Song"}},{"insert":" instead of "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gathering Stone"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eldritch Immunity"}},{"insert":", because while the latter is more thematic, the former just works better. \n\nAnd what would a cascade-centered deck be without "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Apex Devastator"}},{"insert":"? I had to include this card because the latent value is just incredible. With "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Imoti, Celebrant of Bounty"}},{"insert":" out, simply casting this spell give you "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"penta cascade 10. "},{"insert":"That's 5 instances of cascade 10 for 10 mana, an amount of mana that's pretty easy to come by with as much ramp as is present here. And again, all 6+ mana spells that you could hit with those cascades will also have cascade due to Imoti's ability. This is probably the most latently powerful 2-card combo in the deck as it can easily cast half of your deck's spells in one go depending on how your cascade goes. I've run a good number of playtests in the simulator, and it's quite novel to see a good cascade chain play out.\n\nThere is an abundance of colorless mana production so the grey pips will never go unpaid, as well as an ultra flexible (and expensive) land base that, combined with the low count of colored pips, ensures that missing a pip of any kind is difficult. You'll also find many of the staple typal lands included, as one would expect for a deck like this. \n\n All in all, this deck has been a lot of fun to brew and I would definitely like to build this for real in the future. It reminds me a lot of The First Sliver deck, but instead of cascading into stacking anthems you're hitting massive devastating creatures. The explosive ramp is reminiscent of elfball, but with that Simic touch that no other clan provides. The on-cast value is so amazing that I think I'll have to play this build at some point. The hardest part about this was making the cuts after I had the deck outlined... I wanted to include "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Emrakul, the Promised End"}},{"insert":" so dearly, but I think he just ended up slowing down the deck, so "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rise of the Eldrazi"}},{"insert":" ended up being the most expensive card at 12 instead of 13. Thanks for the prompt! I hope you enjoy this list as much as I do!\n\nP.S. I couldn't help but put in a little lore after seeing other submissions do the same... Imoti's tribe had unearthed the most powerful ley line they had ever seen. As the most prominent druid, Imoti led the operation to harness the power it provided. Through years of hard work, they amassed a wealth of charged seals, signets, and runestones, yet the leyline was abundant. At some point along the way, the amount of mana they had stored in one location exceeded a dangerous threshold, creating a deep nexus of power and opening omenpaths that should never have existed. One such omenpath carried into the plane entities that would change the course of history for far more than just Imoti's tribe... The Eldrazi had returned. Now unsealed, not even Imoti can stop the monstrous cascade they had unwittingly created. \n"}]}
