thirty things.\nWe are trying to create an unreasonable number of independent little sources, each politely submitting its own two-damage paperwork.\nThis is why the permanent damage engines become so irritating.\nGuttersnipe casts spells and deals 2 to everybody.\nFiery Inscription casts spells and deals 2 to everybody.\nLongshot, Rebel Bowman casts noncreature spells and deals 2 to everybody while making those spells cheaper.\nHearthborn Battler waits for somebody to cast their second spell and throws another 2 at an opponent.\nSpellshock watches people cast spells and issues a two-point fee.\nEidolon of the Great Revel watches cheap spells and issues another two-point fee.\nAnkh of Mishra and Zo-Zu the Punisher have decided that playing lands should hurt.\nHarsh Mentor has opinions Shaman.\nStorm-Kiln Artist is a Shaman.\nDragon's Rage Channeler is a Shaman.\nAshling, Flame Dancer is a Shaman.\nParty Thrasher is a Wizard.\nApparently the exact-two department was already staffed entirely by people Harmonic Prodigy could encourage.\nRoaming Throne names Wizard and gives Matoc another extra trigger.\nWith both Throne and Harmonic, one qualifying damage event produces three Matoc triggers.\nNot four.\nThis company does still obey basic arithmetic.\nMostly.\nAshling, Flame Dancer gets especially silly because Harmonic Prodigy makes her magecraft ability trigger twice from a single instant or sorcery.\nThe first one rummages.\nThe second one rummages and then deals 2 damage to each opponent and each creature they control.\nMatoc sees the damage and politely requests another card.\nEveryone and everything may have been hit, but it was still one source dealing one damage event.\nWe have standards.\nMatoc can also perform his own inspections.\nPay one red, tap him, trigger.\nBattlemage's Bracers gives him haste and lets me pay one more to copy the activation.\nThe original ping resolves.\nTwo damage.\nMatoc trigger.\nThe copy resolves.\nTwo damage.\nAnother Matoc trigger.\nPatriar's Seal can untap Matoc afterward and allow another activation if there is enough graveyard fuel.\nThis is not infinite.\nMatoc has simply learned how to operate the machinery himself.\nBasilisk Collar makes the situation considerably more concerning.\nPut it on Matoc and his two-damage activation gains deathtouch and lifelink.\nNow two damage can kill almost any creature while gaining life and generating another card.\nPut the Collar on Guttersnipe or Longshot and their table-wide damage starts restoring my life total.\nThe burn department has somehow acquired healthcare.\nBrash Taunter is another excellent employee.\nMatoc deals 2 to the indestructible Taunter.\nMatoc sees his own 2 and exiles a card.\nTaunter sees that it was hit and deals 2 to an opponent.\nThat is a different source dealing exactly 2.\nMatoc exiles another card.\nIf Battlemage's Bracers copied the original activation, we get to perform this lovely little procedure twice.\nAgain:\nNot infinite.\nJust aggressively finite.\nDaredevil, Fearless Fighter is where my own pain becomes somebody else's problem.\nSpellshock hits me for 2?\nMatoc sees it.\nDaredevil sees that one of my sources damaged me and throws the same 2 at an opponent.\nMatoc sees that too.\nAnkh of Mishra hits me when I play a land?\nSame thing.\nZo-Zu?\nSame thing.\nAncient Tomb may be my Exile another card."},{"insert":"\nI tapped a land.\nThere are now several triggered abilities on the stack.\nMono-red has discovered paperwork.\nThe cards Matoc exiles are not merely card advantage either.\nMemory Worm deals 2 to a player whenever I cast a spell from somewhere other than my hand.\nMatoc exiles a card.\nI cast it from exile.\nMemory Worm deals 2.\nMatoc exiles another card.\nNico Minoru does the same thing to "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"every opponent"},{"insert":" whenever I cast from outside my hand.\nPassionate Archaeologist gives Matoc another triggered ability whenever I cast a spell from exile.\nIf that spell has mana value exactly two, Matoc himself deals exactly 2 damage.\nWhich triggers Matoc.\nThe boss has discovered recursive paperwork.\nParty Thrasher gives my noncreature spells from exile convoke, helping me actually cast all these cards.\nBirgi refunds red mana.\nRuby Medallion makes red spells cheaper.\nRunaway Steam-Kin stores mana.\nStorm-Kiln Artist starts manufacturing Treasure.\nThere are turns where I cast a card from exile, that creates another two-damage event, that damage exiles another card, and suddenly half the top of my library is standing in exile waiting for assignment.\nThis is still finite.\nMatoc's trigger is also mandatory.\nThat means Harmonic Prodigy plus Roaming Throne can occasionally make the deck a little "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"too"},{"insert":" enthusiastic.\nIf I create ten qualifying damage events, I may suddenly have an alarming number of cards leaving the top of my library.\nGrowth targets have consequences.\nThen there is Repercussion.\nRepercussion may be the least responsible card in the entire building.\nVolcanic Fallout deals exactly 2 damage to every creature and every player.\nMatoc triggers once for Fallout itself.\nThen Repercussion triggers separately for every creature that took damage.\nEach of those Repercussion triggers deals 2 to that creature's controller.\nEach one is another separate two-damage event.\nMatoc begins processing cards at industrial scale.\nIf somebody has twelve creatures, that person has suddenly discovered why wide boards require insurance.\nBlasphemous Act with Repercussion gives up on the number two completely and simply converts every creature into thirteen damage aimed at its controller.\nSometimes the exact-two experiment concludes with a dramatically less exact amount of damage.\nFiery Confluence is much more orderly.\nChoose the “2 damage to each opponent” mode three times.\nThose are three separate damage events.\nSix total damage to every opponent.\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Three Matoc triggers."},{"insert":"\nPerfectly measured.\nPerfectly compliant.\nDeeply irritating.\nAnd yes, Lightning Bolt is still here.\nBoltwave is still here.\nGalvanic Blast is still here, although once metalcraft turns it into four damage it becomes too successful for Matoc's quality-control department.\nI did not remove good red cards simply because the commander has developed a numerical fixation.\nWhat I did avoid are the usual damage multipliers.\nNo Torbran.\nNo Solphim.\nNo Ojer Axonil.\nThose cards look like obvious burn upgrades until they turn every beautiful exact 2 into a 4 and switch Matoc's entire engine off.\nMatoc wants precision.\nNot bigger numbers.\nEventually all these two-point fees start adding up.\nPrice of Progress can simply announce that everybody's mana base was a mistake.\nRepercussion turns board wipes into disasters.\nPurphoros and the spell-damage engines keep shaving life totals down.\nAnd Crackle with Power remains the enormous red emergency button for when Matoc has generated all the cards and mana I could possibly need but the table is somehow still present.\nThere is no sudden hidden win package.\nThere is no tiny two-card shortcut that ignores everything the deck has been doing.\nThere is just an increasingly hostile environment where playing a land hurts for two, casting a spell hurts for two, activating something hurts for two, my own Ancient Tomb hurts me for two, Daredevil reflects that two somewhere else, Matoc sees all of it, and every tiny damage event quietly becomes another card.\nCommander starts everyone at forty life because two damage is supposed to be insignificant.\nMatoc has taken that personally.\nTwo damage is card advantage.\nTwo damage is removal.\nTwo damage is graveyard fuel.\nTwo damage is apparently company policy.\nAnd eventually, after everybody has been Shocked, taxed, pinged, repercussed, volcanically fallen upon, and politely fined in increments of exactly two...\nI would just like the table to acknowledge one thing:\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Two damage is a real number in Commander."},{"insert":" 🔥2️⃣⚡💀\n"}]}
