The problem was "},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Smothering TIthe"},{"insert":" is too powerful so its always a struggle to resolve it, then once you resolve it people try to remove it and its a whole ordeal. The most powerful part of Tithe is that it is practically an uncapped mana source when your opponents have draw engine's out so the amount of game actions you can take is just based on how many cards you can draw and how many of them are instant speed. Baylen allows you to turn other cards into a pseudo smothering tithe and while it doesn't let you turn mana into cards it does let you turn those same tokens into cards. So every token you can generate through a token engine is 1/3 rhystic study or 1/2 smothering tithe.\nWhen I researched the history of Baylen I found there have been 2 main ways to play Baylen, first is as a staxx list playing cards like collector ouphe and deafening silence, and second is as a fast combo deck using birthing pod combos or other combos that make infinite tokens and outlet them through Baylen. The staxx build abuses Baylen's ability to still be able to tap treasures for mana even with an ouphe effect out, the pod combo version abuses the fact that Baylen cost 3 mana and can ben an outlet for infinite token combos.\nYou will notice that in this list there are 0 stax pieces and also that there is no birthing pod or pod combo pieces such as "},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Felidar Guardian"},{"insert":".\nGenerally in cEDH there are 2 ways you go about getting mass recourses. While dockside was legal we had a valid way to create a massive amount of tokens for a small investment. Now that it is banned (thank God) we have to look elsewhere to generate advantage in the form of tokens which Baylen can turn into mana and cards.\nMany other Baylen lists seem to only use him as an outlet for combo's that make infinite tokens, in my opinion this is leaving a "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"LOT"},{"insert":" of power on the table. The most powerful things we can do in magic outside of simply winning are make mana and draw cards which leads to winning. Baylen does both of these things provided you can make tokens. So the task of this deck is to optimize the amount of tokens that can be made.\nThis brings us back to the 2 main ways decks generate advantage and in the case of our deck that advantage is tokens. So there are 2 type of token generators that can be combed through to select the most optimal strategy. Through either testing or observation I find the only one of these that is powerful enough is "},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Will of the Mardu"},{"insert":" which is busted in this deck. The main problem is you cannot tutor it since it is an instant and we are playing Naya. So while it is a staple for this deck you cannot build around having consistent access to it.\nSince there aren't enough powerful mass token generators to base advantage we have to look to the second category of advantage in cards that trigger off of our opponents game actions. We are in Naya so we don't have access to rhystic or mystic but since we have baylen we can get close. This is where the deck gets its name of Build Your Own Smothering Tithe. We want cards that trigger when our opponents take actions so we can generate tokens which turns into cards and mana. In reality its like building your own rhystic study but B.Y.O.R.S just doesn't sound as good to me.\nIf you can't make tokens then your commander has no text on it so if you don't want to prioritize making tokens then you should probably just play another naya deck that doesn't care about tokens. So you first mulligan priority is to find a token generator. I have these listed into 3 categories\nToken Generators\nFirst is "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Big Token Generators"},{"insert":" these are cards that will make you an uncapped amount of tokens throughout a game while your opponents take game actions. However it can also make a lot of tokens in the right situation where other players have smothering tithes or cabbage merchants out and want to leave up mana. I have had games where it made 0 tokens and games where it made 30. Once again don't keep hands that cast it if they can't also play Baylen. I would also want to have a tutor or some other reason to keep a hand where conqueror is your main game plan in case it doesn't make many tokens. I have never had anyone deny the first card draw and sometimes all you need is one card and one treasure to get you from Tataru into a cabbage merchant or smothering tithe. Continue doing that until you have made as many tokens as you want and then stop putting counters onto Scurry Oak. The cheapest line is 6 mana if you already have Baylen in play and have both the combo pieces in hand, but a lot of the times you have to cast multiple creature tutors in one turn and tap tokens to draw cards. Before I added this card I noticed a lot of the times that I was able to push win's in low resource games was when I had a cradle. So I added this as another cradle. But you can also slowly generate tokens with Brigid by flipping it over so it is worth mentioning here."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Force of Vigor"},{"insert":": I recently added this card back to the deck for 3 main reason's and they all tie into each other a bit. Recently there has been a rise in the "},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Rhystic Study"},{"insert":" clone meta with decks like rog/ishai and to a lesser extent NBC Kinnan. When you play these games rhystic study gets cloned over and over again and then you enter into an extremely high resource game. In the past I have been fine with these games, infact the conciet of this deck is that we actively want to play in those games and thrive in those scenario's. However through my testing it has become impossible to end one of these games in time, there are too many trigger's that go on the stack and everyone draw's there entire deck and can cast all 30 of there instant's let alone flash creatures and flash enablers and the game ends up in a draw. I added "},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Force of Vigor"},{"insert":" to the deck to help terrorize some of these situation's. Threatening to blow up rhystic studies immediately if player's don't agree to a deal around the study as to how many cards it can draw or making them commit to not cloning it. You can also sandbag the force and fire it off when a different opponent goes to clone the study to tempo players out for a time. Remember this deck wants to play high resource games so you can't afford to remove every engine all the time but this card gives you some options. The next reason is that if many decks try to go long then the counter play to that is going as fast as possible, and one weakness of Naya is that you don't have a ton of free interaction for early game pushes. Once turn 3 comes around you are set up and ready to interact most of the time, but before that it can be a struggle unless you are intentional with play patterns/Card choice and this gives you one more option to optimize that. Finally I am testing a new style of politics at times which is terrorism politics. This will come into play when one player tries to remove your boardstate and you don't want them too. Now this only works sometimes since if you are clearly ahead then they will probably just say F you and remove your board. But if you are behind or slightly behind and someone goes to ping your cabbage merchant with an orcish bowmaster's trigger. You can say hey if you do that Im going to "},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Force of Vigor"},{"insert":" your sol ring and mox opal and take you off your mana. Or threaten whatever else they have, if its a rhystic then even better. Basically what you want to convey to them is that if they take you out of the game you will take them out of the game and both lose together. This strategy can work sometimes and it can definitely backfire sometimes. But the key is to stick with your threat if you are being serious. Don't be afraid to lose in those situations and remember to only use it in the right situation with the right political atmosphere. If the player is already mad at you in the game then they will almost certainly not make a deal with you. Also if you have a tithe and a cabbage merchant and a academy manufactor, and someone goes to exile your manufactor, then its probably not the time to make the deal either because there is no other option for them. If they don't remove your board then they will also lose. The best times to use this is if all you have is one token generator and a Baylen with low cards in hand."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Curse of Opulence"},{"insert":" is perhaps one of the most tricky cards to play and I would not recommend playing it unless you are a very political player. The reason its worth playing is because gold tokens are overpowered with Baylen since they don't have to tap to sacrifice, so you can use them to activate Baylens abilities and sac them for mana. The problem with the card is you have to choose a player to give it too and this is a very challenging decision that you have to make on early turns, and if you choose wrong you could either get 0 value from the card or literally lose the game because you ramped your opponents. The best decks to give it too are decks that don't have a lot of creatures to block with so you can get the maximum gold value. The main deck that fits this description is rog/sai as they only play 8 creatures or so. However if you let the rog sai make gold they are almost always going to do so since rog is an amazing creature to get gold with since it has menace. So you really have to walk the line between maximizing the amount of gold you can get without losing the game. Another thing is the player you put the curse on will probably be a little mad at you and it will be harder to politic with them."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Talon Gates of Madara"},{"insert":": This one goes in and out of my deck because as a land its not too good being a colorless land in a deck that needs lots of colored pips. Often times with turbo decks every small piece in the early game really matters and if you can counter it then you are going to buy yourself a turn or even 2 and that is enough to set up your value engine's and interact with your more expensive pieces. One thing about this card is if you show it then you have to use it pretty much. Once other players are aware of it then it has no effect anymore since players will just hold up 1 mana to pay. So you need to be willing to use it on \"Insignificant\" pieces but also stick to your guns when you do. Of course there are times where you could be talked out of it but then the spell practically becomes worthless. It has some utility late game as well but don't expect it will do too much since usually people have enough mana."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Snake Pit"},{"insert":"/"},{"attributes":{"link":"about:blank"},"insert":"Arasta of the Endless Web"},{"insert":" This Big token slot is flexible between these 2 spells. Most Instants and sorceries are blue or black but there are a lot of izzet storm decks around and decks like Etali that cast lots of rituals that aren't blue or black, also green creature tutors and silence effects. However there are cards like rhystic study and valley flood caller that will trigger snake pit but not Arasta. So in the end its more up to you which one of these to play depending on your meta. Currently I am testing Arasta because sometimes no one is playing a blue or black deck at the table, but I have had a lot of success with Snake pit as well so who knows what will be the permanent solution. Notably do not keep hands that cast snake pit or Arasta if they cannot also cast Baylen. Tithe and merchant give you mana without Baylen but this does not."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Wizards of the Coast, Magic: The Gathering, and their logos are trademarks of Wizards of the Coast LLC in the United States and other countries. © 1993-2026 Wizards.
