Therefore Toothy (and less often Pir) will quickly start eating removal spells. I usually like to try to get them both out by turn 3 before most casual tables are excited to start spending their own mana on policing the board rather than developing their own strategy. \n\nIn order to pull this off, we need to ramp on Turn 1 so that we can cast Pir on Turn 2 and Toothy on Turn 3. Therefore, most of the ramp in the deck comes from mana dorks ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Llanowar Elves"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fyndhorn Elves"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Elvish Mystic"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Delighted Halfling"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Birds of Paradise"}},{"insert":" ). \n\nEven better than dorks though are the 1-mana land enchantments "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Wild Growth"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Utopia Sprawl"}},{"insert":". In my opinion these cards belong in pretty much any deck running green because they can be mana neutral on the turn that you cast them most of them time. In this deck, they usually serve the same role of helping up to jam our commanders as fast as possible.\n\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Burgeoning"}},{"insert":" also fits the bill of allowing us to cast to P&T early. But it is much better late game for us than in our opening hand. Because we run a very lean land count in this deck, it can be hard to make the most of Burgeoning using only the lands in our opening hand. I've gone back and forth on removing this card from the deck, but I've left it in because it can be incredible late game if we draw a bunch of lands all at once off of Toothy.\n\nThe last two turn 1 ramp spells are actually fast mana cards that can be played on either turn 1 or turn 2 to get P&T out on schedule: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Ancient Tomb"}},{"insert":" and the obvious one, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sol Ring"}},{"insert":". The Tomb the highest splurge card money-wise in the deck, but it is great in this deck. We are using cards like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Snap"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Frantic Search"}},{"insert":" to untap lands which means that having Ancient Tomb, Wild Growth, or Utopia Sprawl out can mean going mana positive. This can be especially important after flickering Toothy and drawing a pile of cards that we then want to dump onto the battlefield as quickly as possible to overwhelm the table and push through a win.\n\n"},{"attributes":{"underline":true},"insert":"Other Ramp"},{"insert":"\nThere are a few other pieces of ramp that I like to run in this deck despite the fact that they don't actually help get P&T out faster.\n\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Everflowing Chalice"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Astral Cornucopia"}},{"insert":" are both fun counters-based mana rocks that synergize with Pir. I prefer to cast them for X=1. Pir gives them an extra charge counter which means that Everflowing Chalice becomes mana neutral on the turn that it comes down and Astral Cornucopia results in a net loss of 1 mana on its first turn in play, but it can color fix nicely, which can become very relevant when trying to hold up counterspells.\n\n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mox Amber"}},{"insert":" is the only card in the deck that I would consider \"fast mana\" aside from Sol Ring and Ancient Tomb Obviously any card that can go mana positive on the turn it is played is hugely powerful. Compared to those cards though, Mox Amber can only help after at least one of our commanders comes into play. That makes it kind of an expensive card that doesn't fit well into the initial turns of the game plan. However, this card feels great to draw during a big burst of cards off of a Toothy \"exits\" trigger. It can help to start dumping the cards that you draw as soon as possible and hopefully avoid having to discard to hand size. \n\nWe're only running two other dedicated ramp spells: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Skyshroud Claim"}},{"insert":", and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Three Visits"}},{"insert":". \n \nSkyshroud was a more recent addition to the deck and was a bit of a concession. Because our strategy is slow overall and because Toothy will often be removed, we need to be prepared to sustain our gameplan into turns 5-7. If Toothy is removed early, taking a turn off to lay low and cast Skyshroud to find the lands you'll need to pay commander tax feels pretty okay. \n\nThree Visits is vestigial from earlier builds of the deck. It serves as fairly efficient land ramp spell, but mostly has stayed in the deck for now because I happen to have the Portal Three Kingdoms printing and I think it's super cool.\n\nA few cards in the deck do ramp us, but they are doing double duty in other functional categories. I will talk about those cards more in future sections. They include: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Great Henge"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Kodama of the West Tree"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hadana's Climb // Winged Temple of Orazca"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Kami of Whispered Hopes"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Talon Gates of Madara"}},{"insert":".\n\n"},{"attributes":{"underline":true},"insert":"Traditional Card Draw/Cantrips"},{"insert":"\nToothy is the primary card draw engine of the deck, but you need to prime the pump a little bit to get him up to speed.
