Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"# Dargo / Reyhan — cEDH Primer\n\n## Overview\n\n**Dargo, the Shipwrecker + Reyhan, Last of the Abzan**\n\nThis is a Jund cEDH combo deck built around repeatedly exploiting Dargo's alternative casting cost. Rather than treating Dargo simply as a large, cheap commander, the deck uses him as a renewable resource: a creature that can repeatedly be sacrificed, recast, generate mana, fuel graveyard loops, and convert otherwise disposable permanents into a win.\n\nThe deck is designed to be proactive. It wants to develop mana quickly, assemble an engine, and threaten a win before opponents have established a strong board position. The deck contains enough interaction and protection to force through a combo when necessary but it is not deep here. The idea is to win before this is needed.\n\nThe central philosophy is:\n\n> **Sacrifice everything you can, make Dargo cheap, turn those sacrifices into mana or cards, and convert the resulting resources into a deterministic win.**\n\n---\n\n# The Commanders\n\n## Dargo, the Shipwrecker\n\nDargo is the engine that makes the deck work.\n\nHis alternative casting cost allows him to be cast for significantly less mana when creatures and artifacts have been sacrificed. This makes sacrifice outlets much more than simple utility pieces: they directly reduce the cost of repeatedly casting Dargo.\n\nOnce Dargo can be cast for little or no mana, the deck can repeatedly sacrifice and recast him to generate value through cards such as:\n\n* Altar of Dementia\n* Relic of Legends\n* Greater Good\n* Ruthless Technomancer\n* Blood Artist\n* Altar of the Wretched\n* Birgi, God of Storytelling \n\nThe important distinction is that Dargo is not merely the creature being sacrificed.\n\n**Dargo is the resource being recycled.**\n\n---\n\n## Reyhan, Last of the Abzan\n\nReyhan is mostly just here for colors but can be used as sac fodder for cards like natural order or eldritch evolution.\n\n---\n\n# Game Plan\n\nThe deck generally operates in three stages.\n\n## 1. Accelerate\n\nThe first priority is producing mana and establishing cheap permanents that can contribute to Dargo's alternate cost.\n\nThe deck has a large amount of fast mana and acceleration:\n\n* Mana Vault\n* Sol Ring\n* Grim Monolith\n* Chrome Mox\n* Mox Diamond\n* Mox Opal\n* Lotus Petal\n* Lion's Eye Diamond\n* Dark Ritual\n* Culling the Weak\n* Sacrifice\n* Burnt Offering\n* Elvish Spirit Guide\n* Simian Spirit Guide\n* Tinder Wall\n* Orcish Lumberjack\n* Delighted Halfling\n* Ignoble Hierarch\n* Gilded Goose\n* Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer\n* Skirk Prospector\n\nMany of these cards have a second purpose beyond simply producing mana. Creatures and artifacts can later become fuel for Dargo.\n\nThis means the deck frequently turns its early-game acceleration into resources for the combo rather than viewing those permanents as expendable cards.\n\n---\n\n# 2. Establish a Sacrifice Engine\n\nOnce mana is available, the deck looks to establish one or more ways of converting creatures into additional resources.\n\nImportant sacrifice outlets and engines include:\n\n### Altar of Dementia\n\nAltar of Dementia is one of the most important Dargo engines in the deck.\n\nDargo can repeatedly be sacrificed to the Altar and recast using the resources generated by the loop. Once the loop becomes deterministic, Altar provides a direct mill win.\n\nIt also has utility outside of the primary combo:\n\n* Mills your own creatures into the graveyard\n* Enables graveyard setup\n* Provides a free sacrifice outlet\n* Can remove an opponent's library once the loop is established\n\n---\n\n###\n\n---\n\n### Warren Soultrader\n\nSoultrader provides another sacrifice outlet while turning creatures into mana at the cost of life.\n\nLife is generally a resource this deck is very comfortable spending.\n\nWith sufficient creature recursion or token production, Soultrader can create extremely large amounts of mana and provides another route toward assembling a deterministic loop.\n\n---\n\n### Greater Good\n\nGreater Good converts Dargo into a massive card-draw engine.\n\nDargo's power makes sacrificing him to Greater Good particularly attractive. The discard portion is also useful because cards placed into the graveyard can become resources for Underworld Breach and other recursion lines.\n\nGreater Good therefore functions as:\n\n* A sacrifice outlet\n* A card-draw engine\n* A graveyard setup piece\n* A way to turn Dargo into a large burst of cards\n\n### Altar of the Wretched\n\n* Pairs with underworld breach / better than wheel of fortune in this case by filling your hand and graveyard\n* Sort of the same as greater good \n\n### Rakdos, The Muscle\n* great engine with mana fixing to dig into your own deck\n* built in once per turn sac\n* self protection\n* once a sac loop is established you can then convert this into a win by exiling opponents decks\n\n### Yawgmoth, Thran + Orcish Bowmaster\n* great into draw heavy pods\n* will draw you enough to keep up with the blue players\n* opponent draws - OBM trigger - Sac army to yawg - draw a card - make new orc army due to the draw. Sac again. It allows you to keep parity or even get ahead.\n* creature removal\n\n---\n\n# 3. Convert the Engine Into a Win\n\nOnce the deck has generated enough mana, cards, or graveyard resources, it transitions into one of several win packages.\n\nThe deck's primary routes include:\n\n### Underworld Breach\n\nUnderworld Breach is one of the deck's most important recursion engines.\n\nThe graveyard is treated as an extension of the hand. Cards such as Lion's Eye Diamond, cheap mana pieces, sacrifice outlets, and tutors can be reused to generate the resources necessary to finish the game.\n\nAltar of the Wretched is particularly important here because it contributes to the sacrifice/graveyard engine while giving the Breach package another way to convert creatures into resources.\n\nGreater good also fills this line with Lion's Eye Diamond or Lotus Pedal\n\nAltar of Dementia can be used with a Lotus Pedal or Lion's Eye Diamond to infinitely feed your own graveyard saccing Dargo till you hit the combo you need to win \n\n---\n\n## Protean Hulk\n\nProtean Hulk provides the creature-based combo package.\n\nThe deck has several ways to put Hulk onto the battlefield:\n\n* Pattern of Rebirth (enchant a dork that sac's itself like tinder wall is the easiest way)\n* Natural Order\n* Eldritch Evolution\n* Chord of Calling (not currently on)\n* Finale of Devastation\n* Metamorphosis\n\nOnce Hulk dies, its death trigger allows the deck to assemble a creature package directly from the library.\n\nHulk is particularly powerful in this deck because sacrifice is already the deck's primary method of generating resources and Dargo can sac it from the command zone.\n\nTypically a hulk package looks like :\n\n* Blood artist / Warren soul trader / forsaken miner - you can loop miner and if this gets shut off pivot to dargo. Both ways kill the table.\n\n* Birgi, god of storytelling and Dosan the fallen leaf with Altar of Dementia on board or hand with 2 colorless available \n\n* Shang Chi + Goblin engineer + spider manifestation = Entomb the altar of dementia to graveyard. Active Shang Chi - Add 2 red mana - Use to active Goblin Engineer - recur the altar of dementia. Infinite mill using spider manifestations untap ability to constantly sac dargo. This is much safer with a protection piece out. You have a couple 2 mana options in the deck in hexing squelcher and spider punk to protect and can be fetched with the package if you have one of the other cards in hand already or on field.\n\n(no longer on) *Witherbloom apprentice / Dosan the fallen leaf / wild cantor - With chain of smog in hand - protected chain of smog. Probably the most protected line in the deck. Need at least 1 colorless mana open. Can always grab Hexing Squelcher as well and 2 one drop sac dorks like Wild Cantor and Tinder wall but less protected.*\n\n---\n\n# Major Combo Pieces (close out the game)\n\n## Blood Artist + Warren Soul Trader \n\nBlood Artist turns the deck's sacrifice loops into damage.\n\nWhenever creatures die, Blood Artist converts those deaths into life loss for opponents and life gain for you.\n\nWarren soul trader - sac dargo or forksaken miner repeatedly. Blood artist life gain pays for the soul trader ability. Drain the table of life.\n\nForsaken miner is safer because its not a cast. Its a crime ability that puts it back on the field. No cast = safer... youre not feeding rhystic study effects\n\n---\n\n## Rakdos, the Muscle + a sac outlet\n\nthis often converts pretty easily. You need to establish consistent sac's and mana generation. Once you can cast Dargo infinite you win the game by exiling decks.\n\n\n## Deadpool + Ruthless Technomancer loops \n\n1. Cast Ruthless Technomancer\n2. When Ruthless Technomancer enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to sacrifice Dargo and create seven Treasure artifact tokens.\n3. Choose to return Dargo to the command zone. Re cast dargo for 1.\n\n \n4. Cast Deadpool , choosing to swap it and Ruthless Technomancer's text boxes as it enters the battlefield.\n5. When Deadpool enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to sacrifice Dargo\n6. Cast Dargo from the command zone eating ruthless techno original.\n7. Activate Techno Deadpool by paying ({2} magic symbol) ({B} magic symbol) and sacrificing two Treasures, returning the original Ruthless Technomancer from your graveyard to the battlefield.\n8. When Ruthless Technomancer enters the battlefield, it triggers, causing you to sacrifice Dargo and create seven Treasure artifact tokens.\n9. Choose to return Dargo to the command zone from your graveyard.\n10. Repeatedly cast and sac deadpool / ruthless and dargo to make infinite treasure. \n11. Return deadpool back from the graveyard one last time but dont copy the text. Activate his last ability as many times as you'd like making your opponents draw out. If someone tries to respond by casting a spell you just bury them in more draw triggers so it never resolves.\n\n## Spider manifestation / Birgi / Relic of Legends+ altar of dementia \nThis allows for infinite cast of dargo and infinite mill\nSelf and or opponents\n\n\n*not being used* Witherbloom Apprentice + Chain of Smog \n\nThe deck also contains the Witherbloom Apprentice / Chain of Smog combo.\n\nWitherbloom Apprentice turns copied spells into life-loss triggers.\n\nChain of Smog can repeatedly target its controller, creating a loop that triggers Witherbloom Apprentice repeatedly.\n\nOnce the loop is established, Witherbloom Apprentice drains the table.\n\nThis provides a compact win condition that does not require Dargo to remain on the battlefield.*\n\n\n---\n\n# Mana Engines\n\n## Relic of Legends\n\nRelic of Legends has a particularly important interaction with Dargo.\n\nBecause Dargo is a legendary creature, Relic can convert him into mana while the deck's sacrifice outlets allow Dargo to repeatedly leave and return to the battlefield.\n\nThis creates another avenue for repeatedly casting Dargo and converting his presence into mana.\n\nRelic is therefore both acceleration and a combo piece with Altar of Dementia \n\n---\n\n### Birgi\n\n### Spider Manifestation\n\n### Rituals\n\n### Earthcraft Effects - *currently not being run but have before*\n\nCreature-based mana is particularly powerful in this deck because creatures are already useful sacrifice resources.\n\nThe deck can exploit creatures such as **Veteran Explorer** alongside sacrifice effects and Earthcraft-style interactions to turn creatures into additional mana while simultaneously advancing the Dargo plan.\n\nThis is an example of the deck's broader philosophy:\n\n> A creature is rarely just a creature. It is mana, sacrifice fuel, a tutor target, a combo piece, or some combination of all four.\n\n---\n\n# Card Advantage\n\n## Necropotence\n\nNecropotence provides one of the deck's strongest raw card-advantage engines.\n\nThe deck is comfortable paying life for resources, and Necropotence can convert excess life into the cards needed to assemble a fast combo.\n\nBecause the deck is capable of winning quickly, Necropotence is generally being used as a setup engine rather than a long-term value permanent.\n\nWith crop rotation and enough mana. You can grab emergence zone, crack it and win.\n\nNoxious revival is here in case you draw the emergence zone. You can discard it , respond to the trigger from necro and move it back to the top of your deck. Then cast crop rot to get it on the field.\n\n---\n\n## Ad Nauseam\n\nAd Nauseam serves a similar purpose.\n\nThe deck's relatively low average mana value allows Ad Nauseam to generate a very large number of cards while preserving enough life to continue executing the combo.\n\nFast mana makes Ad Nauseam especially dangerous because a successful resolution can immediately translate into a winning turn.\n\nGiven some of the bombs in the deck CMC wise it is important to keep note on which cards are already in hand or graveyard and figure out how close you can really push the life use. If you have not hit protean hulk yet and youre at 9 life.... its probably not safe to hit another flip.\n\n---\n\n## Wheel of Fortune\n\nWheel of Fortune provides another way to refill a depleted hand while simultaneously putting cards into the graveyard for Underworld Breach.\n\nThis dual purpose is important. The discard is often an advantage rather than a drawback but not as safe as altar of the wretched.\n\n---\n\n# Tutors\n\nThe deck uses both traditional tutors and creature tutors.\n\n### Universal tutors\n\n* Demonic Tutor\n* Vampiric Tutor\n* Gamble\n* Diabolic Intent\n* Tainted Pact\n\n### Creature tutors\n\n* Chord of Calling\n* Eldritch Evolution\n* Finale of Devastation\n* Natural Order\n* Summoner's Pact\n* Pattern of Rebirth\n* Metamorphosis\n\nCreature tutors are particularly strong here because so many of the deck's combo pieces are creatures. Getting out protean hulk is usually the best / quickest way to convert a win\n\nA tutor does not necessarily need to find the final win condition. It can instead find the piece that establishes the engine.\n\n---\n\n# Interaction and Protection\n\nThe deck does not attempt to play a traditional control game. Its interaction is primarily designed to protect a winning turn. We really can't consistently win a stack battle and wont out value long games. Force of vigor is to shut down hate pieces when you are ready to go before your turn. Claim the firstborn is great for things like drannith magistrate, sac it to dargo when youre ready to go.\n\nImportant interaction includes:\n\n* Force of Vigor *not running currently*\n* Pyroblast\n* Veil of Summer\n* Boseiju, Who Endures\n* Orcish Bowmasters\n* Yawgmoth, Thran\n* Spider Punk\n* Fury\n* Yawgmoth, Thran Physician\n* Dosan the Falling Leaf\n* Hexing Squelcher\n* Vexing Bauble\n* Noxious Revival\n* Claim the firstborn (sac the creature to dargo) *not running currently*\n\n\n## Dosan the Falling Leaf\n\nDosan is particularly valuable when the deck is ready to commit to a combo.\n\nRather than trying to fight through a stack full of interaction, the deck can establish Dosan first and then execute its combo without allowing opponents to cast spells during the critical window.\n\nThis makes Dosan both a protection piece and a proactive combo enabler.\n\n---\n\n# Unique Card Choices\n\nOne of the defining characteristics of this list is that many cards perform multiple jobs.\n\n## Ragavan, Nimble Pilferer\n\nRagavan is not included simply for its ability to generate Treasures.\n\nIt serves as:\n\n* Early mana acceleration\n* Sacrifice fodder\n* Mana fixing\n* A cheap creature for Dargo's alternate cost\n\nThe Treasure production can be especially valuable because the artifact itself can later contribute to Dargo's alternate casting cost.\n\n---\n\n*Claim the Firstborn (not currently on)*\n\nClaim the Firstborn is more than creature removal.\n\nAgainst creature-based decks, it can steal an opponent's creature and then sacrifice it to Dargo or another outlet.\n\nThis effectively converts an opponent's creature into a resource for your combo.\n\nIt can also give one of your own creatures haste when necessary.\n\n---\n\n## Life's Legacy\n\nLife's Legacy is an especially strong card in this deck because sacrificing the creature is part of the cost.\n\nDargo can become a huge creature for very little mana, allowing Life's Legacy to convert him directly into a massive number of cards.\n\nIt also naturally feeds the sacrifice plan and graveyard strategy.\n\n---\n\n\n# Fury\nCreature removal\nCan be sac'd upon entering to effects like burnt offering to generate large amounts of mana to convert into things like Ad Naus\n\nVeteran Explorer - ***Not currently in use*** \n\nVeteran Explorer looks unusual in cEDH, but it has a specific purpose here.\n\nWhen sacrificed, Explorer provides basic lands to both players. With the deck's Earthcraft interactions, this can become a way of converting a sacrifice into additional mana development.\n\nIt is therefore not simply a ramp spell—it is another creature that participates in the Dargo sacrifice engine.\n\n---\n\n# Mulligan Philosophy\n\nThe deck does not need to mulligan exclusively for a single two-card combo.\n\nA good opening hand generally contains some combination of:\n\n1. Fast mana\n2. A Dargo enabler\n3. A tutor\n4. A card-advantage engine\n5. A sacrifice outlet\n6. Protection\n\nThe ideal hand can usually do one of two things:\n\n**Threaten a fast win**, or\n\n**Generate enough resources that a win becomes highly likely within the next turn or two. If you get past turn 3 your windows start to close.**\n\nHands that contain several mana sources but no way to convert that mana into meaningful progress should generally be treated with suspicion. I tend to mulligan these\n\nLikewise, a hand containing multiple expensive combo pieces but insufficient acceleration should generally be shipped.\n\nThe deck rewards hands where individual cards overlap in function.\n\nA hand containing a creature, sacrifice outlet, fast mana, and tutor is often substantially stronger than a hand containing several cards that only become useful once the combo is already assembled.\n\n---\n\n# Sequencing\n\nOne of the most important skills with the deck is recognizing when to spend resources and when to preserve them.\n\n### Do not automatically sacrifice everything.\n\nA creature may be:\n\n* Dargo fuel\n* Mana\n* A tutor target\n* Protection\n* A combo component\n* A sacrifice outlet\n\nThe correct sacrifice is therefore often the creature that provides the least future value.\n\n### Preserve redundant pieces.\n\nIf the deck already has a sacrifice outlet, it may be better to keep another outlet in hand rather than deploy it immediately.\n\nThis makes it harder for opponents to disrupt the entire engine with a single removal spell.\n\n### Use the graveyard deliberately.\n\nCards in the graveyard are not necessarily lost.\n\nUnderworld Breach, Noxious Revival, Altar of Dementia, Wheel of Fortune, Greater Good, and other effects allow the graveyard to become a second hand.\n\n---\n\n# Winning Through Resistance\n\nThe deck's biggest strength is redundancy.\n\nThe same basic resource—**sacrificing creatures and repeatedly exploiting Dargo**—can be converted into:\n\n* Mana\n* Cards\n* Mill\n* Damage\n* Graveyard resources\n* Creature tutors\n* Recursion\n* Exile\n\nBecause of this, removing one combo piece does not necessarily stop the deck.\n\nFor example, if an opponent removes an Altar, Dargo can still interact with other sacrifice outlets. If the graveyard becomes unavailable, the deck can pivot toward another line relatively easily.\n\nThe deck should therefore be piloted as an **engine deck rather than a single-combo deck**.\n\n---\n\n# Closing Philosophy\n\nDargo/Reyhan is fundamentally a deck about turning creatures into resources.\n\nThe deck's most important question is rarely:\n\n> \"How do I cast my combo?\"\n\nInstead, it is:\n\n> **\"How many times can I make this creature die, and how many resources can I get from it before the game ends?\"**\n\nDargo gives the deck an unusually efficient creature to repeatedly sacrifice and recast.\n\nThe result is a proactive combo deck capable of producing explosive turns while retaining multiple overlapping paths to victory.\n\nThe deck does not need every piece of a combo in its opening hand.\n\nIt needs **mana, a way to generate resources, and a way to turn those resources into Dargo loops.**\n\nOnce that engine is established, the rest of the deck is designed to make the loop deterministic and end the game.\n"}]}
