Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"When going with a pre-2010 Commander, why not start out with one of the five that the format is named after - the OG Chromium. Besides having the best art of any of the five original Elder Dragons, he's also got the weirdest ability of the five, and I always need to explain what Rampage is when I pull this deck out. Rampage 2 means that every creature beyond the first one that is assigned to block Chromium gives him +2/+2. Blocking with one creature keeps him at 7/7. Blocking with 2 makes him a 9/9. Three blockers makes him an 11/11, and so on...\n\nThe theme of the deck is Esper Rampage – every creature card that has rampage in the Esper colors is represented here, including some you’ll probably never see again:\nTeeka's Dragon (1,562 decks)? Check.\nHorrible Hordes (217 decks)? Check.\nHunding Gjornersen (100 decks and 33 as a Commander?) Check\nRapid Fire (100 decks)? Check.\n\nUseful? Mostly not...but the theme is Esper Rampage, so by Bolas we're going to play them! Since Flying and Rampage is somewhat of a non-bo, we’ve got multiple ways to take flying away from Chromium so everyone can block the big metallic dragon:\nKinscaer Harpoonist\nThundercloud Elemental\nWalking Sponge\nMystic Decree\nColossus Hammer\nMagebane Armor\nPhyrexian Splicer\n\nThere are also lots of creatures that affect combat, ranging from fairly common (Odric, Master Tactician and Portal Maniuplator) to ridiculous (Abu Ja’far and Dread Wight). The best one to get out is Godhead of Awe, which makes all other creatures into simple 1/1. Since it doesn’t get rid of their abilities, blocking a bunch of 1/1 creatures with something that has Rampage 2 ends up killing a lot of those 1/1s, especially if you give Chromium first strike or double strike, which is possible with multiple equipment in the deck, not to mention Dueling Grounds and Archetype of Courage.\n\nBut what if you’re playing a +1/+1 counter deck, and those 1/1s have lots of counters on them? We can take care of those as well:\nThief of Blood\nVampire Hexmage\nEventide's Shadow\nHex Parasite.\n\nIf our opponent still insists on attacking us, there’s multiple combat tricks we can play. In addition to Masako the Humorless letting our tapped creatures block, there’s six pseudo-fogs:\nDarkness\nSudden Spoiling\nAetherspouts\nMirror Match\nBatwing Brume\nInkshield (this card is the MVP of the deck, and has won me several games)\n\nI’ve played this deck at lower power tables, despite the expensive mana base. I optimize the mana base so I can cast my jank on curve. One such table was wondering why I sacrificed a Polluted Delta for a Scrubland as my Turn 1 play with a “low power deck” until I tapped for W and cast Abu Ja’far. It’s always fun to play with cards older than the rest of the people in your pod.\n"}]}
