Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"A deck I made as an homage to Expedition 33! (Some spoilers in my explanation ahead)- With plenty of references to painting and art within the cards, and a fun toolbox playstyle revolving around constantly recurring key cards out of our graveyard for an immortal stream of value. \n\nThe main engine of the deck consists of pitching cards like Scholar of the Ages and Pinnacle Monk into the graveyard, which are then reanimated and recur the reanimation spell plus another card on entry. Anhelo functions to help duplicate these reanimation style spells, as well as a sac outlet to get these key creatures back into the graveyard so we can \"repaint\" them again. And again. And again. \n\nEarly turns will focus on utilizing looting spells and tutors to find 1. One of these recursion creatures to pitch and 2. A reanimation spell to start the engine. As a result our early turns tend to be a bit slower, and vulnerable. Though the deck does have ways of regaining life later in the game (through repeatedly recurring Gray, Merchant of Asphodel) or even through Maestro's Charm if we're really desperate. Notably the deck runs few removal spells- instead opting to recur the same ones over and over to function as our removal package. This makes the deck less likely to find removal early on, though the abundance of looting effects does mitigate that somewhat. Plus, removal spells can be spent in a more Laissez-faire manner as they are seldom gone forever with this deck.\n\nThe mid-game is focused on continuing to recur cards and accumulate value through Anhelo, while slowly grinding our opponents' boards down. There is a removal spell for every card type in the game with this deck, with enough tutors and recursion to grab them at any time. If our opponents have nothing to remove, the deck can hold its mana to be sure while doubling some instant speed value cards on each opponents' turn (Anhelo's effect is per turn, not just ours! It's a large reason why Vedalken Orrery is in this deck!). Big Score and Unexpected Windfall are great for this because they pay their mana costs back in treasures when doubled, while allowing us to continue to pitch and draw cards. Alternatively, we can continuously reanimate cards like Solemn Simulacrum to just ramp continuously, or a Scholar of the Lost Trove to cheat out some big artifacts from the deck into play. Scholar of the Lost Trove also functions as a form of recursion for our artifacts, allowing this deck to actually recover from a Vandblast. \n\nOn the topic of interaction from our opponents; what should the deck watch out for? What if an opponent Farewells? Or Bojuka Bogs? Hopefully if we're at a point in the game where a Farewell is coming down we've found one of our counterspells and are able to flat out stop it. We can then recur whichever counterspell we use, serving to dissuade or stop any plans to exile our graveyard or board. Bojuka bog is unfortunately unstoppable for this deck- we could run something like a Stifle to prevent losing our graveyard but the deck has another method already built into it. Using an instant speed reanimation effect, such as Makeshift Mannequin or a Vedalken Orrery giving our sorcery speed reanimation sorcery, we can reanimate key creatures we want to save from the Bojuka Bog's effects. If a card with a Pinnacle Monk esque effect is reanimated, even the reanimation spell itself is not lost as we can recur that back before the Bog resolves. When Bog or any graveyard exiling effect is most devastating however is in the early game. Once the engine is up and running, the deck can generally salvage enough of its graveyard every time a Bog comes down to survive just fine. A Bojuka Bog turn 3 after a Buried Alive however? Yeah that's going to hurt. Anhelo himself isn't the most vulnerable to spot removal as the deck is so laser focused on reanimation that if he dies to spot removal and the engine is up, he can just be allowed to enter the graveyard and subsequently reanimated like every other creature in the deck. The deck also is able to largely function without Anhelo. Of course we would like it if he was never removed but the deck isn't completely and utterly reliant on him. I do still try to refrain from playing him unless I can immediately double a spell and get my mana's worth, just in case.\n\nAs for win conditions- The deck effectively has 3. Master the Way is the main win condition of the deck- As it can eventually accrue so much mana and draw that it becomes feasible to copy a Master the Way with Anhelo to remove a player. Cards like Exsanguinate and Crackle with Power are objectively better and more efficient win conditions- I just think Master the Way is less \"out of nowhere\" while not being so convoluted or obtuse that the deck is wasting people's times; it at most takes an extra turn cycle to win and if we have enough cards in hand to effectively remove a player with it, we've won anyway. Gray Merchant of Asphodel is primarily life-gain in this deck, but if needed can function as a win condition. If Master the Way somehow gets exiled or Reliquary Tower is in the graveyard (lands and enchantments are the only cards we cannot recur), then the Merchant is our next best bet. Finally, Maestro's Charm if the game has truly gone awry can get us a win. This is very much a control style deck; we are not looking to beat people with combat damage or really attack ever with this deck. \n\nSome extra notes about some decisions I made with the deck! (the \"why do you have THAT card?! section)\nYes the land count is fairly atrocious. The reason why is evident- I wanted to have 33 lands for the bit. A boatload of MDCFs function to help mitigate this, but this does mean the landbase is worse than it could be if the deck were optimized to remove that quirk."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Panharmonicon and Starfield Vocalist are cards I've been on and off about. In the end I decided to keep them as they are very effective ways of squeezing out extra value from most our effects while also both being recurrable, dis-incentivizing destroying them. Plus if you double a reanimate spell like Stitch Together, you can reanimate one of these cards, then the copy of the reanimation spell can pull an ETB creature giving you an immediate doubled pay off of their effect, making them less slow than they would seem."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Expedition map is just there for the name. "},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"A card I removed from the list is Agent of Treachery because even though it is just a better Meteor Golem I'm pretty sure people don't like it when you recur a card that can steal any of their permanents (including lands!) repeatedly. The deck wants big rocks for later in the game but our curve demands we have a bit more to do for our early plays. I eventually decided on the 2 mana rocks be added to the deck, aiming to just speed it up a little and give it more to do early when it's weakest- in the early game. We're not aiming to play Anhelo on turn 3 anyway most games, allowing the deck to run these rocks without ruining our curve."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Cards like Goblin Electromancer were cut simply because they do not always allow us to play a 4 mana card on turn 3. Still I ultimately decided on the rocks as they having a higher floor."},{"attributes":{"list":"ordered"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"I added The Immortal Sun and Caged sun purely because the deck already had an artifact recursion package- so why not add some big artifacts to cheat as well?
