Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"\tThis is my original "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Magda, Brazen Outlaw"}},{"insert":" combo EDH deck that I designed when Magda was spoiled before Kaldheim was released. This deck wins by using "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maskwood Nexus"}},{"insert":" to make all of our creatures both Dwarves and Dragons; this means all of the creatures in the deck can be tutored with Magda and also all of our creatures tap to make treasures. From here we combo out following a convoluted combo line I personally designed way back before Magda was released. This deck is meant to be linear and high power, although it does have some toolbox options that can be tutored with Magda if necessary. It also requires a solid understanding of the stack, as the Magda combo can all happen at instant speed and stacking triggers on the stack and ordering them in the proper order is paramount.\n\nHere is how we would like the deck to play.\n\nEarly Turns:\n\tThe combo requires amassing 10 Treasures with Magda. This is accomplished by playing Dwarves and tapping them to crew Vehicles. The ideal curve is T1 Dwarf, T2 Magda (swing with T1 Dwarf to generate a Treasure), T3 play a Vehicle and tap T1 Dwarf and Magda for two more Treasures. This gets the Treasures flowing, and these first three Treasures can be used to ramp in the next turn for a big play, to help cast "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maskwood Nexus"}},{"insert":" from hand if needed, but can also just sit there piling up toward our 10. This decision very much depends on the hand you are dealt, and if you need to use removal, etc. Note that the Vehicles chosen here all adhere to two rules: converted mana cost is 3 or less, and crew is 2 or less. This is so they can all be played on T3 and they can all be crewed solo by Magda. This is important for the way the deck curves out, and since we are only using the Vehicles as tap outlets it should be strictly followed. \n\n\nThe Combo:\n\tOk so this is a bit convoluted, but here goes. Once you have 10 Treasures we can activate them in the following way: sacrifice 5 to tutor out "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maskwood Nexus"}},{"insert":", followed by "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Myr Battlesphere"}},{"insert":". Myr Battlesphere is now just 5 Dwarves, so tap them all to crew a Vehicle and make 5 more Treasures. Then, sacrifice these 5 Treasures to grab "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Chancellor of the Forge"}},{"insert":", which should make "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"at least 9 bodies on entry"},{"insert":"--itself, plus it's ETB triggered ability will see itself, Magda, the 5 Myrs, and the crewed Vehicle, making another 8 tokens. \n\n\tHere, we really need "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"at least 10 bodies"},{"insert":", because we need to be able to make 10 more Treasures to activate Magda twice, so here is how we ensure that. I will lay this out in the most basic scenario, but most games we will have more creatures out and the math will be less tight; here we go.\n\n\tEither we have at least one other Dwarf or crewed Vehicle out--"},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"which is highly likely--"},{"insert":"for the Chancellor to see on ETB, or if we wish to start the combo with only Magda and a single Vehicle on the board we will need "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"11 Treasures"},{"insert":". This second scenario is almost never the case, but it is important to mention it because it is possible. \n\n\tNow, Assuming we had one other Dwarf out, the Chancellor entering will add 10 new bodies to the board: the 9 I outlined above plus an additional token from seeing the additional Dwarf. Now we can tap them to make another 10 Treasures, and we can continue forward. \n\n\tWe spend the first 5 Treasures to snag "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Scourge of Valkas"}},{"insert":"; "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"this deals at least 19 direct damage to an opponents face on entry"},{"insert":", based on the number of creatures we have out (they're all Dragons per the "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Maskwood Nexus"}},{"insert":", remember?). In the most basic scenario, Scourge of Valkas will see itself, Magda, the one other Dwarf I mentioned in the previous paragraph, the crewed Vehicle, the 5 Myr, the Chancellor, and the 9 tokens the Chancellor created, for a total of "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"19 Dragons and 19 damage"},{"insert":". \n\n\tTap the Scourge of Valkas for a Treasure (she's a Dwarf too, remember?), which should leave us at 6 Treasures--plenty for another Magda activation! Now, there are two remaining creatures in the deck to grab: "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Siege-Gang Commander"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Emrakul's Hatcher"}},{"insert":". Sacrifice 5 of the current 6 Treasures to get Siege-Gang; itself and the 3 tokens it creates are all Dragons so our Scourge will trigger 4 more times as the creature enters and creates the 3 tokens. Now, we can choose to stack these triggers in the most optimal order, so we will. When the Scourge sees the Seige-Gang, we put it's trigger on the stack first, then follow it with the Seige-Gang's own ETB on top. Letting that resolve will have 3 more Dragons enter (or 1/1 Goblins, who really knows) which will stack 3 more Scourge triggers on top of the original one. And the juicy part is this: "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"Scourge's ability deals damage equal to the number of dragons as the ability resolves, not when it is put on the stack."},{"insert":" So, when all 4 resolve they will each see that we now have 23 Dragons on the field and deal 4x23 to our opponents. If you're counting, we're now at 111 direct damage and we may have already won. But, just in case, we might as well tap these 4 new Dwarves we have to bring our Treasure total back to 5 and activate Magda a final time; this time we grab Emrakul's Hatcher. The process here is identical to with the Siege-Gang, so long story short we deal another 4x27 damage to our opponents faces. "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"We're now at 319 damage to the opposition"},{"insert":". If you still haven't won then it might be time to surrender. \n\n\nImportant Notes:\n\tThis build can be easily stopped by certain cards, but it is fast and efficient and does not require an infinite combo if your pod / LGS frowns upon those. Also, notice that the combo itself does not require any expensive cards, so this can be accomplished on a budget. Of course, drawing "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Dockside Extortionist"}},{"insert":" can absolutely speed up the process of getting to 10 Treasures. \n\n\tOne final and very important note: "},{"attributes":{"italic":true,"bold":true},"insert":"you do not need to have exactly 10 Treasures before beginning the combo"},{"insert":"; once the Maskwood Nexus enters, "},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"crewed Vehicles are also Dwarves"},{"insert":"! Scryfall affirms that a crewed Vehicle can be crewed again (the crew ability doesn't disappear simply because it is already a creature), so if you have 2 Vehicles out that have been crewed by your Dwarves they are now also Dwarves that can tap to crew each other (and each will subsequently create a treasure from Magda as they do). This means with 2 Vehicles out you only need 8 Treasures before tutoring up the Maskwood Nexus. This is key, and took me a few times playing with the deck to realize it. There are many sneaky ways to squeeze out one or two extra Treasures to hit that 10 Treasure threshold. And, if all else fails somehow, there is also a backup win condition in "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hellkite Tyrant"}},{"insert":", or potentially through combat with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lathliss, Dragon Queen"}},{"insert":" and a horde of Dragon tokens (although she is certainly not a key piece of the deck and could be cut). \n\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"EDIT"},{"insert":": In my first iteration of this primer I stated that a Vehicle that has been crewed can tap to crew itself. While this was true when I originally built the deck this ruling was edited after Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty so that now "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"another"},{"insert":" creature must be tapped to crew a Vehicle. This clause was probably not important in almost any other context, but here it has definitely impacted the speed of the combo. A sad discovery for me; I thought that trick was pretty clever, and meant that we really only needed 9 treasures and one vehicle on the board before beginning the Maskwood Nexus combo. Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.\n\nNotable Cards: \n\tOther key cards that are huge here are "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mutavault"}},{"insert":" before Maskwood hits, and also "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Blinkmoth Nexus"}},{"insert":" after Maskwood hits. These are essentially free 2 drop Dwarves if you have happened to play them. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Elixir of Immortality"}},{"insert":" can help by shuffling our graveyard back into our library if necessary, and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Arcbound Reclaimer"}},{"insert":" can return a needed combo piece to the top of the deck (a vehicle or Maskwood Nexus, typically). I removed my copy of "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Goldspan Dragon"}},{"insert":" for another Dragon deck, but it also helped me win on a few occasions and is a worthy include. The "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pirate's Pillage"}},{"insert":" type cards can also speed up the Treasure generation, and don't forget that "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Rings of Brighthearth"}},{"insert":" means we only need 5 Treasures and 2 open mana (or 7 Treasures) to pull off the combo. The removal package is weak, but it is what it is in mono red; I focused on tutorable artifacts so that I could fetch these answers if needed. \n\n\tI elected not to include a detailed break down of each category in the deck because I think most are self-explanatory, and I would rather focus on the minutia of the combo rather than break down every single card. We have the trifecta of \"required categories\" in ramp, draw and removal; then we have the Dwarves, Vehicles, synergy and win cons, all of which are covered in one of these various paragraphs. If you have any questions feel free to leave them below! \n\n\tThis list has not been updated in a very long time, so there are certainly some better Vehicles, Dwarves and support cards that should be added in. Sadly, this build is now slated to be \"retired\", so this primer will not likely see any future updates. However, I'm still happy to answer any questions or comments! This deck is one of my favorites that I've designed and it's been a blast to pilot. Cheers \n"}]}
