Not due to Loading, Ready, Run’s infamous Bear Force One Commander deck, but due to finding Ayula after discovering Ricardo Bessa’s artwork for the card Bearscape from the Pride Across the Multiverse Secret Lair. \n\nI ran a list similar to Bear Force One at first, but then took the deck apart due to color restrictions and an overall lack of power. Fast forward to Modern Horizons 3 and WotC deciding that Ayula is no longer a strong, independent woman that don’t need no man and we have Kudo, a slovenly appearing male that looks like he prefers to lounge around while Ayula does all the work (which is the point of the deck, he’s not really the Commander, she is)\n\nKudo’s sole purpose in the deck is to convert everything into 2/2 Bears to level the playing field. For my opponents, this means facing down my threats with lowly 2/2’s, for me, this means making my small army of Bears and Bear adjacent creatures (courtesy of Kudo) into large, seemingly insurmountable threats. \n\nThis deck takes the Selesnya Enchantress route, using Enchantments to make my creatures grow, protect them, and allow me to further explore my win conditions, but most of all it’s to allow me to find a Tutor and get Ayula out of my deck. We can do so with Recruiter of the Guard, Worldly Tutor or Eladamri’s Call.\n\nOnce Ayula has hit the battlefield, the idea is to keep her and Kudo alive long enough to make my bears and “bears” big enough to go “BRRRR” and take out my opponents. There are multiple ways to protect her in the deck as well, like Mother and Giver of Runes, some Enchantments that provide protection and finally, we can use Enlightened Tutor to find a big finisher.\n\nThe deck also makes use of the fact that my creatures start out small. If Ayula is successful in doing her job, I can clear the board of large threats with Austere Command in order to swing free and clear in combat. Or maybe my many Auras will lead me to use Winds of Rath instead, allowing me to get a Voltron victory with my bears.\n\nMagic was always a fun and favorite hobby of mine, even when I was a kid before I even knew how to play the game. The art fascinated me. Growing up LGBTQ and Nerdy always made me feel disconnected from the community. Now, being 34 years old and a loud, out and proud Bear (the term for us gay folks with some extra padding and fur) I get to express that in Magic with my decks. Bear kindred still has a long ways to go before Bears are a powerhouse in the format, but my Bear decks are special to me and sometimes pull victory out of the hat.\n\nPeople checking out the deck will notice the aesthetic design as well. 2024 is the year of challenging myself to build exciting decks around a restriction so that I can really challenge myself. As stated previously, the art captured my attention most, and most of that was the beauty of the original Pre-Modern frame. Recent years have contributed to an insane card pool of new cards using that frame since TSR and I’m excited to put them alongside older cards and play with cards that haven’t seen love in a long time. \n\nI hope that those viewing the deck enjoy what I have put together so that I can continue to celebrate my Queen and enjoy playing her for years to come. \n\nThanks,\nJustin\n"}]}

The words “The land continues to burn” resonate with me for some reason and you’ll find there is no card or counter quite like Fireheart or its burn counters. Truly a creature that should have been legendary.\n\nWhile burn counters on lands are not a terribly efficient way to end the game, Ojer Axonil’s ability allows those burn counters to become truly painful at 4 damage each at the beginning of a player’s upkeep. Losing your commander is hardly a problem, as other effects in the deck stack up damage with burn counters. \n\nLines of play include: Ramp into an early Braid of Fire and follow it up with Obsidian Fireheart as a mana sink to put burn counters on every land. Use Neheb to wheel your hand, add red, and put more burn counters on lands or cast awesome synergies once you have burn counters on lands. War Elemental gets a counter for every land that burns. Solphim and Torture Pit stack more damage with burn counters. All Will Be One goes infinite with War Elemental, not to mention adding chip damage with every Age Counter, Burn Counter, and Loyalty Counter placed on permanents.\nAlternatively, Ojer Axonil is no slouch either. With it on the table, Circle of Flame acts as a deterrent against attackers. Cinder Pyromancer becomes a legitimate, reusable threat dealing copious amounts of damage in a single turn. Flamekin Spitfire is your next mana sink for Braid of Fire that effectively deals 1 damage per 1 mana once Ojer is on the table.\n\nFinally, there is a recursion package here to protect Braid of Fire and Obsidian Fireheart. Conqueror’s Galleon/Foothold can retrieve either card from your graveyard. Sword of Light and Shadow provides protection from some of the best removal in the game "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":"and"},{"insert":" retrieves Fireheart from the graveyard. Safe Haven, Tibalt’s Trickery, Deflecting Swat all help to protect Fireheart and keep it on the table long enough to burn the earth!\n\nWhen all else fails, turn your elementals sideways or burn everyone out with Koth’s ultimate or Chandra’s +2.\n\nThe best part of this deck is even in defeat, the burn counters remain on the lands they are affecting. Your presence is felt even after you’re taken to zero as counters have no owner and thus are not exiled when you are out of the game! \n\nThose lands continue to BURN.\n\n"}]}
