{"ops":[{"insert":"My son is 13, and has been learning and playing MTG. He talked about wanting to get a commander precon deck so he could be a stronger player, but he really doesn't know much about them. I have never played, so I'm completely in the dark, but I have read some forums that suggested it can be more effective to buy individual cards. \n\nIt occurred to me that it might be interesting to get him a number of cards that are broadly useful - a toolset of great tools that he could use to start to try different styles of play. Cards that will always be useful. \n\nReading the forums here it seems like people have different styles of decks they build for different styles of play, but I don't think my son is focused that way yet, and I'd like to surprise him, so I don't want to ask. I suppose there's going to be a lot of \"it all depends\" answers, but I'm hoping there might be some ideas that I can use.\n\nThe other option I considered is if someone has created a good deck (that isn't sold as a precon) that I could assemble for $100 or less that would be a great deck for the price. \n\nI hope this is making sense, and I appreciate any thoughts that any of you would share.\n\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"Hi,\n\nif you are looking for a precon that works well right out the box I would recommend \"Sultai Arisen\" that came out earlier this year:\nhttps://archidekt.com/decks/12028998/sultai_arisen_tarkir_dragonstorm_commander\n\nIf you are looking for something to assemble - here are two of my budget lists:\n\nhttps://archidekt.com/decks/18092920/go_big_or_go_home\nThis is a fairly simple deck that just wants to ramp big creatures onto the board and than stomp your opponents into the dust. A theme that never goes out of style. The cards are a mixture of newer ones as well as some evergreens that you will find in many decks."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nhttps://archidekt.com/decks/14581606/count_on_it\nA little more complex than the first one, this deck is build around the commander and wants to sacrifice either specific permanents or just the weaker creatures to strengthen the rest. It runs two themes: +1/+1 counters and legend matters for maximum (within budget) synergy. Concerning future-proofing; the counter mechanic has been increasingly popular in the last couple of years and will see newer cards printed regularly. With the flood of universe beyond sets there will also be no shortage of legendary creatures if your son wants to take the deck apart."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"Thank you for these ideas. This has been a very hard time for him, and I love the idea that he's finding something to sink his interest into that's positive. I much prefer giving him a custom group of cards because I think the subtle message is hat it isn't just about buying the new thing, which has been an achilles heel for him.\n"}]}
