Every year we get new cards that push and pull the colors in different directions. Can you build a WR landfall deck, or a RG control deck? What about a UR lifegain deck? You're not supposed to, but that shouldn't stop us from trying.\n\nThis is also a great exercise for a color you're very familiar with. Thinking outside the box is a great way to break old patterns and reignite a passion you might've lost. Similarly, this could be the perfect time to revisit a color pair you don't like. Cirdan Turbo Hug.\n\nThis is a little bit of a meta entry for the prompt, because this deck does Simic things in a way very different from other Simic decks. Big mana, tons of cards, and cheating things into play; but for everyone! Instead of monopolizing game time by taking tons of game actions, you let everyone at the table play their deck turned up to 11. \n\nOne of the more interesting things about this deck is that it almost never takes something away without giving something back. Even the decks single boardwipe, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Great Aurora"}},{"insert":", leaves everyone with a bunch of lands and cards in hand.\n\nThe whole point of the deck is to ramp and draw the whole table into an endgame state as quickly as possible. It wins, if at all, by decking the entire table out through insane amounts of card draw. \n\nOne of the splashiest finishers is going Great Aurora into "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Folio of Fancies"}},{"insert":", to leave your opponents with 1/3 of their library. \n\nOf course, Great Aurora into "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Tempting Wurm"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eureka"}},{"insert":" is sometimes the funnier and more interesting play! š¤£\n\nThe deck also runs "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Platinum Angel"}},{"insert":", because after casting a big "},{"insert":{"card-link":"New Frontiers"}},{"insert":" and having a mana doubler (or two) out, you can sometimes "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Turnabout"}},{"insert":" and float enough mana to deck everyone; including yourself!\n\nIn any case, the name of the game for this deck's path to victory is breaking parity. \n"},{"insert":{"card-link":"Faerie Mastermind"}},{"insert":" is a huge part of this, making sure you get more cards from the shared draw effects than your opponents do. {"ops":[{"insert":"Dear EDHREC deckbuilding contest judges,\n\n"},{"attributes":{"link":"https://archidekt.com/decks/11349910/jon_ironicus_group_hugger"},"insert":"Jon IRONICus, Group hugger ā¢ (Commander / EDH deck) ā¢ Archidekt"},{"insert":"\n\nWelcome to: Jon IRONICus, Group Hugger! The ironic part of this deck is it's group hug strategy. Per the context prompt, my task was to build a deck around a theme or strategy not usually expected in the deck's colors. On EDHREC, Dimir (Blue/Black) is the least common Group Hug strategy in a two-color pairing, with only 55 decks at the time of this writing.\n\nNormally, Jon Irenicus is built around a Group Slug strategy, where you play creatures with huge downsides and then try to donate them to your opponents. In this deck, we actually want to give our opponents good stuff, and then also benefit from it ourselves.\n\nBecause we are in Dimir, there aren't a lot of good Group Hug cards to play. Most of them are artifacts with symmetrical affects that our opponents benefit from first. Here is where Jon Irenicus comes into play. If we can manage to give these symmetrical Group Hug pieces to our opponents, then we can benefit from them too, as they can draw us additional cards. The only problem is, Jon Irenicus can only donate creatures. Herein lies a major twist of the deck: Artifact Animation! In order to give our Group hug components to our opponents, we first need to turn them into creatures. Thankfully, blue has a number of ways to do this.\n\nSo how do we win the game? Through a few different ways. Because our creatures will be Goaded, our opponents will be forced to attack each other, thus lowering their life totals. Because we are giving our opponents artifacts, we are also playing a number of cards that punish our opponents for having or using artifacts. This damage will be slow, but in true Group Hug fashion, the hope is that the table won't notice what is happening until it is too late.\n\nThe key categories for this deck are:\n\n13 Artifact Animators - cards that turn artifacts into creatures to donate with Jon Irenicus. My personal favorite of these: Chimeric Coils - since Jon Irenicus means it can't be sacrificed!\n\n3 Artifact Changers - cards that turn things that aren't already artifacts into artifacts so that they can be donated too!\n\n6 Artifact Punishers - cards that punish our opponents for having or using artifacts\n\n13 Group Draw - cards that draw both us and our opponents cards, in true Group Hug fashion. My favorite of these: a new card, Gonti, Night Minister. Who incentivizes players to attack each other and makes them treasure tokens!\n\n4 Group Ramp - cards that ramp the table. Notably, if we manage to animate a Treasure token, our opponents won't be able to sacrifice it if we donate it!\n\n11 Interaction - cards that interact with our opponents. Most of these interaction cards turn things into artifacts for later punishment. Phyrexian Scriptures is great here, as it doesn't kill our Artifact Creatures and can turn Jon Irenicus himself into one!\n\n7 Ramp - cards that only ramp ourselves\n\n1 Recursion (2 including Academy Ruins) - cards to get our artifacts back when they inevitably become blocked in combat\n\n2 Token Makers - cards that make artifact tokens for us to donate. Genesis chamber is fun as a Group Hug card, and Thopter Fabricator is great because we draw lots of cards!\n\n3 Finishers - cards that can end the game quickly\n\n3 Tutors (4 including Urza's Saga) - these mages serve two purposes. 1 - to get an Artifact Animator, a ramp piece, or an Artifact Punisher. And 2 - to be creatures we can donate!\n\nThank you for the opportunity to brew this fun deck! This is my first time participating in a deckbuilding contest. It was a great challenge and stretched me as a deckbuilder. Cheers!\n"}]}
