This ensures each color plays differently, and allows players to express themselves through the cards they choose to include in their decks. Each of these identities can also be interpreted in different ways, which opens up many different styles of play even among the same colors.\n\nWith thirty years of cards to choose from, however, there's no reason to limit your deckbuilding to what the color pie says. Every year we get new cards that push and pull the colors in different directions. Can you build a WR landfall deck, or a RG control deck? What about a UR lifegain deck? You're not supposed to, but that shouldn't stop us from trying.\n\nThis is also a great exercise for a color you're very familiar with. Thinking outside the box is a great way to break old patterns and reignite a passion you might've lost. Similarly, this could be the perfect time to revisit a color pair you don't like. What used to be strange and unwieldy can become fresh and invigorating when approached from a different angle. Typically Laezel is run as a commander in a +1/+1 counter or planeswalkers matter deck - both of which are subthemes of this deck - but I am instead utilising her ability to add an additional counter to the player who controls her to ramp up my energy production. Shadow Thieves may not be the most powerful background for this deck theme, but synergises really well with Laezel and can help in more combat orientated match ups. Although white is included in Jeskai energy decks which makes it a relatively common colour for the archetype, black isn't, and in fact as of Aetherdrift, has the least support in the archetype as green got a lot of new energy cards. However, I'd argue any two colour combination energy deck is rare enough, as with how few cards there have been in the archetype it was always more value to pick three colours.\n\nBut why Orzhov over any other two colour combination?\n\nAside from the value Laezel provides, white has access to some very useful spells that generate and use energy, with some highlights being:\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Aetherstorm Roc"},{"insert":", which generates energy off of creature etbs, can grow itself, and tap defending creatures."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Jolted Awake"},{"insert":", a versatile recursion tool or cycle card."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Razorfield Ripper"},{"insert":", a powerful solo attacker that buffs itself equal to your energy count, or equips to a creature to give them the same effect."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Salvation Colossus"},{"insert":", a strong attacker and utility piece for the late game that opponents will have a hard time removing."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nAnd Black's energy spells provide some unique and powerful effects that other colours don't, such as:\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Chthonian Nightmare"},{"insert":", an enchantment that generates energy on etb, and can spend it on bouncing itself whilst returning a creature from the graveyard to the battlefield."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Demon of Dark Schemes"},{"insert":", a big body on board that on etb can remove token spam - sorry Krenko players - and generates energy off creature deaths."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Glint Sleeve Siphoner"},{"insert":", a creature that can generate its own energy to use, and spend it to get the effect of a Phyrexian Arena, and with Laezel the effect is net 0."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Gonti's Machinations"},{"insert":", another way to reliably gain energy and spend it to drain your opponents life whilst keeping yours healthy."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nBeyond this, there are some very valuable colourless energy pieces, like:\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Aetherflux Codui"},{"insert":"t, a new artifact that generates a massive amount of energy, and with enough can draw you seven cards and allow you to play your entire hand for free."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Aetherworks Marvel"},{"insert":", another new artifact that can spend energy on a powerful draw effect."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Fabrication Module"},{"insert":", an artifact that provides a +1/+1 counter whenever you create energy."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"attributes":{"bold":true},"insert":"Gonti's Aether Heart"},{"insert":", another versatile energy generator that can spend it on taking an extra turn."},{"attributes":{"list":"bullet"},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"\nHowever, Orzhov offers a lot more than just its energy effects. Black is well known to have some powerful tutor cards - a lot of which are here because I don't have a budget on this hypothetical deck - and White offers some of the most consistent removal and protection options which keeps this deck in control of the game. And if this is done perfectly on curve, that is 10 mana on turn 5, which is more than enough to snowball the game. \n\nThis deck list has many ways to win the game and generally plays the way an Orzhov value deck would, which may not be the most creative divergence from the colour identity, but I believe the way it does it is very unique, and for one of my first ten brews, I am very proud of the list I achieved. I will also very likely create a budget version of this deck, because $650 is a lot and there are some weaker alternate cards that could be swapped in. {"ops":[{"insert":"I really like this list a lot. Geode Rager is an underrated card and a really intelligent sidebet to provide your aggressive list with some protection in an on theme way. I had a big issue with committing to an idea for this contest, and I briefly considered doing Keranos land animation! So its cool to see that area of thought kinda represented here! I temporarily settled on doing a really crazy Boros land animation deck. Ultimately I chickened out because I leaned into making my land creatures indestructible and using MLD as an unexpected wincon and assumed that people would accuse it of (A) being too typically Boros due to the MLD and (B) unfun, because people hate on MLD. Probably overthought it but either way, good to see some good land deck content here. :)\n"}]}
