Deckbuilding Contest - January 2025

{"ops":[{"insert":"Hello brewers,\n\nHappy New Year! Before we get to the first deckbuilding contest prompt of 2025, a brief introduction. Details below.\n\nWhat’s the contest all about?"},{"attributes":{"header":3},"insert":"\n"},{"insert":"Working within the parameters of the prompt provided below, construct a decklist with your own creative spin. The goal is not to mitigate your commander's drawback, but to work with it as much as possible. Lists will be evaluated on how effectively they turn the commander's drawback into an advantage. "},{"insert":"\n\nKeep in mind that this prompt isn't limited to \"bad\" commanders. In fact, it's much easier to build an interesting deck when the commander has a powerful effect, but requires you to work a little to achieve it. For example, what would a deck need to do to win the game with Inferno of Star Mounts' activated ability? Or could you build Lord of Tresserhorn like a Nekusar deck? Your chosen commander should have a powerful payoff with your deck's strategy.\n\nThis is also the perfect opportunity to combine themes and bend the color pie in unique ways. Can mono-white draw enough cards to make Kiyomaro, First to Stand a real threat? Or can you combine spell slinging with aristocrats in Dralnu, Lich Lord? What is a downside in one color can sometimes be an advantage in another, and with 30 years of cards to choose from chances are there's some way to take advantage of any effect.  \n\nFinally, be sure your commander doesn't impose a restriction and then immediately solve it. Taigam, Sidisi's Hand may skip your draw step, but also draws a card and fills your graveyard in your upkeep. Compare that to Asmodeus the Archfiend, who stops you from drawing cards at all until you pay the price. The same applies to Companions most of the time. They're so powerful, and easy enough to build around, that they end up being all upside for little to no cost. The idea is to generate copies of our commander to attack all three players at once, but more importantly, to have three attack triggers that can be ordered for multiple wheel effects and thus activate one or more of the deck's payoffs. For example, under ideal conditions with Teferi’s Ageless Insight on the battlefield, and two clones of the commander (+ the original Amber) attacking each a player, you discard your hand (for the sake of the argument, 6 cards), then draw 6 cards. The second trigger can then be resolved, 6 cards discarded and 6 drawn, and the same goes for the third trigger. While the randomness of her effect can offer potential advantages, such as drawing a card that fits a player’s immediate needs in sticky situations, it also introduces significant drawbacks. The luck factor becomes a double-edged sword; the card drawn could either be exactly what’s needed or an utterly irrelevant or harmful card. This unpredictability not only creates tension for the player using Neera but also causes chaos for the other players. Because the result of Neera’s ability is random, opponents are often forced to adapt to unexpected shifts in board state, leading to confusion and altered strategies. It might be a bit too clever though, as in tricky to make function properly for an inexperienced player. \n\nThe execution leaves a lot to be desired but don't be discouraged by that. Biggest flaw is that you are missing a lot of your \"vegetables\" the essential cards that make your deck function. Ramp, card draw and removal.\n\nAlso, yes, if you wanna commit harder to the constellation theme more sac outlets could be good, but like I said this concept is tricky. I am experienced and I struggled to make a grixis enchantress deck work myself because there just aren't that many eerie/constellation effects in grixis worth playing. But if you like the concept go for it. That is the joy of magic for a lot of people (myself included), trying hard to make crazy stuff that shouldn't work actually work.\n\nI would not worry too much about budget unless you are actually buying the deck yourself. Especially not for this contest. Just build the best deck you can with whatever cards you can find on scryfall so you can practice your deckbuilding.\n\nKeep deckbuilding, and keep submitting here even. Good luck!\n"}]}

{"ops":[{"insert":"I had originally built that as a Cedh deck and felt like it was boring because so many slots were filled with 'must haves'. At this point the aim is to be strong but reasonable. There are some spicy madness cards and an army of small creatures to keep our hand as empty as possible going into combat. Hope you enjoy <3 ( I had technically posted in the discord but the deck was set to private so the link didnt work, I deleted my message and it wouldn't let me resend after fixing it so I'm posting it here now)\nhttps://www.archidekt.com/decks/10742747/january_deck_building_contest\n"}]}
