Deck Tokens & Extras (11)

Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"This deck is looking to take maximal advantage of Eomer's ability while compensating for the death of legendaries with Sword of Light and Shadow and Feldon of the Third Path.\nThe many cheap legendaries let the deck consistently curve out either aggressive threats or compact value engines. Topping its curve with Eomer puts pressure on greedy decks' lifetotals, after which the deck seeks to attrition out other lower to the ground decks.\n\nBecause Eomer is sacrificing (mostly) nontoken legendaries, the deck could risk of running out of legends, or even cards in hand in general. Additionally, as with most aggressive decks board wipes compound this problem further. To combat this, the deck is running Sword of light and shadow, and many ways to find it. Not only is sword one of the best non-artifact creature recursion engines red has access to, it also functions as evasion, a pay-off for Eomer's extra combats, and a way to beef up our life total against the inevitable crack back. The most common way to find the sword is with Goblin Engineer, which in turn can be found with Goblin Matron and Imperial Recruiter. Engineer is very good in this deck, as it can also find Liquimetal Torque, Skullclamp, a sac-outlet, a legendary artifact creature, or expidition map. We can also recur engineer with the sword, and engineer can function as sac-outlet for legendary artifact creatures.\n\nTo trigger Eomer as consistently as possible while getting solid value and damage out of the extra combats, this deck runs 29 legendary creatures. I've chosen to forego the 0 and 1 mana red legends, which could have made the deck faster, to make the deck considerably more resiliant. For the same reason, I didn't include Rising of the day. Eomer's ability does a very good job at turning a wide-board into a lot of damage, the difficult part is keeping a wide board around. That isn't to say the deck is slow. With an average mana value of just below 3 the deck runs smoothly and usually curves out into Eomer. With as much card velocity and removal as is realisticly feasable in a red deck, the deck is a low to the ground-aristocrats style attrition deck. Particularly notable interaction comes with a few board wipes that keep Eomer around: Anger of the Gods, Fiery Confluence, Brotherhood's end and Mizzium Mortars all clear out tokens and blockers, while letting Eomer continue swinging. Oliphaunt is also particularly neat here. We can repeatedly find mountains by recurring it with the sword. This also repeatedly triggers the deck's discard synergies, and it can give Eomer trample if we reanimate it with Feldon. If combat and commander damage become unrealistic as ways to win, the deck can 'steal games' with one of two combos. Toralf + Blasphemous act is lethal on most board states, and City on Fire enables the other wipes to win the same way. Additionally, City on Fire often makes Price of Progress lethal and it works nicely with Eomer, as it can be convoked out, after which Eomer can attack with another legend, sac, untap all creatures and swing with City in play. The mana base is minimalistic, to minimise the damage Price of Progress will do to ourselves. Two lands exile graveyards, two can sac creatures, and Buried ruin can bring back the sword or other important artivacts. These lands offer a toolbox with expidition map, reinforcing the atrittion plan, and none of the lands enter tapped, supporting the aggressive plan.\n\nI've played this deck in a few games, and its been a blast, as the deck finds itself playing on the thin edge of aggro. Keeping enough fodder around while not getting blown out by a board wipe or a permanent it can't deal with makes the mid to late game very tricky. The deck is especially good at pressuring greedy blue and green decks, and matches up well against stax and pillow-fort strategies because it's already playing decidely fair. I've had a great time playing with all of the different legends and their emergent synergies.\n\nThe deck ended up pretty budget-friendly without sacrificing much card quality. There are a few cards that I would include, but consider to be prohibitively expensive. These are:\n- Ragavan, Numble Pilferer\n- Urza's saga\n- Purphoros, God of the Forge\n- Commander's Plate\n- Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx\n\nThanks to Snail for the challenge, I had never heard of this card but it was a very interesting brew.\n"}]}
