I've swapped Xyris for the Sergeant, and changed to selesnya from temur, but the idea is the same. \n\nThe downsides to the switch are that I don't have as easy access to draw and double strike, and I don't have access to Xyris' snake production on his 2nd ability, and without access to red I have a much harder time removing noncreature permanents. The upsides are that I get access to more protection spells at cheaper price points in white, and the Sergeant costs 2 less mana than Xyris, meaning everyone can start drawing cards much sooner and I can cut some of the higher mana value ramp spells, because unless I can ramp on turn 1 I don't speed up playing my commander. \n\nTo make up for losing the snakes I run Jolrael, Monastery Mentor, and Hoofprints of the Stag, because having blockers that I can pump whenever makes me way less likely to get beat down, and these slot in where the 3 mana ramp was removed. These don't have the bonus of triggering off of your opponents draws like Xyris does, but they're better than nothing. Mana dorks are also really good because they both turn 1 ramp me and can both block and tap in the same turn, letting me sneak extra buffs in on the defensive. The lack of draw in the deck is pretty brutal, and there isn't really a solution to the problem other than hoping that the two theoretical extra turns of commander draw are enough to offset the loss of blue. \n\nAre these changes worth it? Probably not. I built a worse version of a good deck and made it more expensive because of the changes needed to make it viable. It definitely has a niche and I could probably do more to differentiate it from the original, but doing that while managing to make a cheaper deck than the original is basically impossible.\nEDIT: As of now, excluding basics the deck is officially 10 cents cheaper than the original.
