Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"Finally, a Boros deck that I actually enjoy. "},{"attributes":{"italic":true},"insert":" "},{"insert":"I spent a few months tinkering with some Boros lists, trying to find something that I enjoyed. the deck that got closest to being a success was "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer"}},{"insert":". But I really wanted to build something that wasn't just another Boros deck that needed to be heavily equipment themed to be good. Enter "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Kalemne, Disciple of Iroas"}},{"insert":".\n\nThe decks that I tend to enjoy the most usually have a combination of these traits:\n(1) A weird theme of some sort (all of my favorite decks have a theme that I try to make work)\n(2) Good interaction (although I will forgo this somewhat if the deck generates a lot of card advantage and generates a board presence quickly)\n(3) A commander that people don't see very often that either supports the theme or gives me a build around\n\nLet's see how all of these are checked off.\n(1) Giant Tribal. This is a strange tribe that doesn't play like normal tribal decks. You need a ton of ramp and you need the giants to have a strong individual impact. This is right up my alley.\n(2) "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sunforger"}},{"insert":". This card is INSANE. It makes you play a lot of interaction so that you have options when you have the hammer. I love playing interaction that has more niche uses, and the hammer lets you try some stuff that you normally wouldn't get to play.\n(3) I have personally never played against Kalemne. EDHREC has her at 231 decks as of my writing this, which is respectable, but she isn't a deck you are gonna see very often. She is both a build around AND a support card for the tribe, seeing that almost all of the good giants are 5+ cmc.\n\nOk, so I'm going to talk about the different categories of cards, why I chose them, and a bit about how to play the deck. But first, I want to put a disclaimer saying that this deck has a weird budget. I happened to own some of the more expensive cards in this deck, otherwise they probably wouldn't be here, except maybe "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stonehewer Giant"}},{"insert":", which is one of the better cards in the deck. If you replaced all the lands with basic lands (and maybe the tapped duals) and cut the expensive-ish cards, you could easily get the list down to 70 or 80 dollars I bet. It wouldn't be that much worse either.\n\n--Ramp--\nMy philosophy for ramp in this deck is to have a bunch of ramp at 2 cmc or less, but to include some cards that are 3+ cmc that either can draw me cards later or make a lot of mana like "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gilded Lotus"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smothering Tithe"}},{"insert":". I've found that the 3 cmc ramp cards that can cash in for a card or two are really good in a colour combination that can just run out of cards sometimes, and even better in a deck that can just make a ton of mana. I'm playing about 15 ramp cards and a cost reducer in "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stinkdrinker Daredevil"}},{"insert":". The average cmc of your non-ramp cards is huge, so you need to make a lot of mana very quickly so you can start making big plays.\n\n--Card Advantage--\nThere is a lot of inefficient card draw in this deck, but I've found it to work pretty well so far. I have two wheels that can easily draw you 5-7 cards when you fire them off. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sunbird's Invocation"}},{"insert":" is an allstar in this deck, doubling up on giants a lot of the time. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Treasure Map // Treasure Cove"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Tome of Legends"}},{"insert":" feel really good in this deck. The Tome will probably just draw you an extra card a turn unless Kalemne is shut down. The map is slow, but gives you really good value over time and can ramp you if you need it (also has great synergy with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smothering Tithe"}},{"insert":"). "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Seer's Sundial"}},{"insert":" is a necessary evil in this deck. It will let you draw cards off your lands, and you ramp so hard that it won't be a burden on your mana to do so most of the time (it also can turn "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Evolving Wilds"}},{"insert":" into a 4 mana draw 2). "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Staff of Nin"}},{"insert":" is the classic Boros draw engine that I will always play somewhat begrudgingly. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Protector of the Crown"}},{"insert":" is a fun card that is on theme and can draw you cards. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Arch of Orazca"}},{"insert":" was just an easy include that can help when you run out of cards. I also have two cycling lands here so you can get out of land flooding situations more often. Lastly, "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sun Titan"}},{"insert":" can be used to bring back mana rocks that sacrifice to draw cards, letting you set up an engine.\n\n--Interaction--\nThe "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sunforger"}},{"insert":" package is really fun. I personally love the fork effects in this deck. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fury Storm"}},{"insert":" is a really cool card that can double, triple, or even quadruple your opponent's removal, card draw, ramp, or even counter a counterspell. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bolt Bend"}},{"insert":" is almost always one mana in this deck, and my meta has a lot of targeted removal, so I have never been sad to have it. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Eerie Interlude"}},{"insert":" saves your stuff from board wipes for the most part. It's a good option with Sunforger. Other than the more standard removal, most of my interaction comes in the form of other giants. There is stuff to deal with small creatures, board wipes, a mass artifact and enchantment hate giant, and ways to remove creatures. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Disaster Radius"}},{"insert":" is like one sided boardwipe with almost no downsides in this deck. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Warstorm Surge"}},{"insert":" is a card I have considered removing, but for now, it stays as a way to close out games and turn my inefficient threats into stronger cards.\n\n--Synergy Cards and Equipment--\nI have "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Enlightened Tutor"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Open the Armory"}},{"insert":" here mostly as ways to find Sunforger. But I've also included some more equipment as targets for "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Stonehewer Giant"}},{"insert":". "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Argentum Armor"}},{"insert":" is slow, but it's amazing with Stonehewer giant, coming out for only two mana. otherwise it's a slow card that has a big impact. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Swiftfoot Boots"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Loxodon Warhammer"}},{"insert":" are just generally very good, but giving something hexproof at instant speed is amazing and Kalemne really likes having trample. "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Odric, Lunarch Marshal"}},{"insert":" is here to give all of your creatures double strike and vigilance. I might cut him someday, but the ability to give all of my large creatures double strike is fun.\n\n--Playing the Deck--\nThis deck is straight forward:\n(1) Ramp\n(2) Play Kalemne or card advantage engines\n(3) Play giants\n(4) Profit???\n\nIf you have the chance, getting sunforger out should be the priority, seeing as the deck is just much stronger with it. I try to get some experience counters on her quickly, because people will try to remove her if they have the chance, but recasting her a few times over the course of the game is fine. I usually will hold off casting her if I can't cast a giant the turn after, instead opting to play more ramp or a card advantage cards, so I can set up to cast a big creature after her.\n"}]}
