Description
{"ops":[{"insert":"PRIMER (disclosure: not my primer nor original list: https://moxfield.com/decks/IF-Eb17Bt02fG8KlaNfVzg)\n\nTable of Contents:\nIntroduction\nTerms and Concepts\nCombos/ Wincons\nNotable Inclusions and Exclusions\nChange Log\nSpecial Thanks & Discord Link\n\n1. INTRODUCTION\nThe goal of Marath Evolution is more proactive than the \"sit back and grind advantage\" gameplan of old. This Marath build focuses on the popular turbo Gaea's Cradle plan to push an X tutor like finale of devastation to get Brightglass Gearhulk to assemble a Cryptic Trilobite and Hardened Scales combo (more on that later). Alternatively, we can pivot into an Evolution Witness combo line with LED loops or land a Cacophodon for overwhelming mana advantage.\n\nIt also needs to be mentioned up front that Marath is a removal engine on a stick and is hands down the most resilient green deck against Orcish Bowmasters. For green players frustrated by the blowouts OBM can cause, Marath is the answer. With the threat of a Marath ping looming, those OBM arrowa will go elsewhere.\n\nBefore we dive into the deck even more, let's look at the toolbox that Marath brings:\n\nThe true glory of THE LORD (Oracle Text)\nMarath, Will of the Wild enters the battlefield with a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the amount of mana spent to cast it.\n\n, Remove X +1/+1 counters from Marath: Choose one —\n\nPut X +1/+1 counters on target creature. X can't be 0.\nMarath deals X damage to any target. X can't be 0.\nCreate an X/X green Elemental creature token. X can't be 0.\nMarath immediately gives us three angles to play across:\n\nMoving +1/+1 counters. This says \"target creature\" and that includes Marath. Buff your creatures, increase counters on Marath with a Hardened Scales in play, guarantee Esper Sentinel draws, save your creatures from damage-based removal.\nDeal damage. Never fear Orcish Bowmasters again, ping opposing mana dorks or weak commanders, strap on some Deathtouch and shoot everything.\nMake Elemental tokens. Do you like Gaea's Cradle? Do you like Enduring Vitality? Do you like Earthcraft? This deck easily turns tokens into mana.\nWhy to play this deck | Strengths\nMarath Evolution might be the perfect deck for you if:\n\nYou enjoy creature heavy strategies\nYou like your decks to have depth to their resource management\nYou like to control the board with direct damage.\nYou enjoy cEDH decks that still have a lot of room for testing and innovation\nWhy not to play this deck | Weaknesses\nYou might not like to play Marath Evolution if:\n\nYou don't want to rely on your opponents to stop early wins from other players\nYou want to be the table police (i.e., you want blue)\nYou want something straightforward where it's hard to mess up your decisions too badly\nYou want to play turbo and win in early turns (we can kinda do this sometimes)\n\n2. TERMS AND CONCEPTS\nBefore we get into it, here are some terms that will come up a lot in this primer.\n\nScales Effect:\nAny effect that increases +1/+1 counters as they are placed. Hardened Scales is the classic here.\n\nCounters:\nLeave the counter spells in blue. We're talking +1/+1 counters! The most critical resource in this list is the number of counters on Marath. It is the lens through which we evaluate new combos and new cards. It is often what makes or breaks a combo win, as you will see in the sections below.\n\nREFILL: 👇👇👇This is the most critical interaction in the deck! 👇👇👇\nWith a Scales effect in play, Marath can target himself with the +1/+1 counter ability, remove a +1/+1 counter from himself, and place TWO +1/+1 counters back on himself. This nets +1 counter. This is how you Refill Marath.\n\nWarning: If Marath is at ONE +1/+1 counter, you are dead in the water as Marath will die to state-based actions when you remove that last counter. You CANNOT refill if you're at a single +1/+1 counter.\n\nPing:\nUsing Marath's damage ability. This is almost always used in increments of 1 damage. There aren't any situations where you would want to ping in higher increments. It rarely happens, but people will cast a Deflecting Swat on a critical damage ping.\n\nBattery:\nA combo piece that generates mana to power our Scales wincons. Cryptic Trilobite and Mana Echoes are our two primary batteries. Cacophodon is a pseudo-battery when paired with a big mana source. More on these later.\n\nBrightglass Gearhulk:\nLet's talk quickly about Brightglass Gearhulk. This card is insane in Marath. The Brightglass ETB gets Cryptic Trilobite and Hardened Scales to hand which allows us to immediately assemble out combo with Marath (as described in the next section). It is the closest we can get to a one card wincon, and as such a lot of play is centered around getting Brightglass into play.\n\n3. COMBOS / WIN CONS\nThere are a lot of combos with Marath. Some better than others. A typical Marath list will run 2 to 4 combo lines with varying efficiency. This primer lists out the main combos in this deck as well as some ancillary combos that other Marath players run.\n\nMy list is currently on the following:\n\nCryptic Trilobite Combo\nEvolution Witness + LED Combo\nCacophodon Combo\nBomberman (started testing in Feb 26)\nI have found these to be the most flexible and complimentary combos for my style of play, but there are other combos such as Rosie Cotton with Basking Broodscale or Kiki Jiki lines that other Marath pilots favor. I'll talk about Marath variants in a section later in this document.\n\n\"But what if Marath isn't accessible?\" Many of these combos need Marath which can be frustrating when a Drannith Magistrate is on the board. Some players are testing Bomberman with Vexing Bauble as a way to make infinite mana and then draw your deck to find interaction to unlock Marath and then win.\n\nMarath wins through two primary board states:\nInfinite Colored Mana: Cast Marath, burn out opponents with direct damage until Marath dies, recast Marath, and repeat. Marath needs to be recast.\nInfinite +1/+1 counters: Using one or two Scales effects along with a Battery, we can generate infinite +1/+1 counters and mana to burn the board with direct damage. Marath does not need to be recast.\nCryptic Trilobite + Scales\nThis combo is the bread and butter of Marath. It is mana efficient, stax resilient, and will have your opponent asking \"WTF is a Cryptic Trilobite?\" This should be in every Marath deck.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Marath + Cryptic Trilobite + any Hardened Scales effect\nMana: WRG for Marath, 2 for Trilobite, G for our cheapest Scales, 1 to start the combo. 2 if Marathon starts at 2 counters.\nCounters: Marath needs at least 2 counters. Cryptic Trilobite needs at least 1 counter.\nSequence:\n\nIf Marath has only 2 counters, first activate Marath for to refill Marath to 3 counters.\nActivate Marath for to put a +1/+1 counter on Cryptic Trilobite (Scales makes it 2 counters bringing Trilobite to 3 counters with the first instance).\nRemove a counter from Cryptic Trilobite to add \nActivate Marath for to and refill to 3 counters.\nRepeat steps 2 through 4 netting counters on Cryptic Trilobite with each loop.\nWith infinite trilobite counters, we get infinite mana and can infinitely refill Marath to ping the board down for the win.\nTips If your Cryptic Trilobite dies, pop it into your Agatha's Soul Cauldron and make any creature a Trilobite. Heck, make Marath a Trilobite!\n\nWith a scales effect in play, you can use Savage Summoning to drop Trilobite into play at instant speed (with two counters) and go for the win!\n\nMana Echoes + Scales (not currently in the deck)\nMana Echoes is the Albatross of Marath combos in my opinion. While Mana Echoes is technically a second copy of Cryptic Trilobite, it is 4 mana (ew), needs two red pips (yuck), and is only found by one tutor in our deck (gross). That said, it still wins games, and it is nice to have the redundancy with the Trilobite line. Not that nice though, as I have cut this line.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Marath + Mana Echoes + any Hardened Scales effect\nMana: for Marath, for Mana Echoes, for our cheapest Scales, to start the combo.\nCounters: Marath needs at least 3 counters.\nSequence:\n\nActivate Marath using , removing a counter and creating a 1/1 Elemental token.\nMana Echoes trigger, generating for each Elemental in play (Marath and the token) for a total of .\nActivate Marath using and refill back to 3 counters.\nRepeat Steps 1 through 3 netting additional colorless mana as the number of elementals increases and get infinite mana.\nWith infinite colorless, we can infinitely refill Marath to ping the board down for the win.\nTips: Mana Echoes can double as some psuedo ramp if you manage to land it early. This deck has a fair amount of humans and elves so it isn't unheard of to get some extra floating mana from time to time.\n\nWhy am I not running this? Mana Echoes is a challenging card. At 4 mana with two red pips, casting this can be very resource consuming so its often a dead card in hand. Plus we can't tutor it easily.\n\nCacophodon + Scales + Big Mana\nCacophodon is about as close as we can get to a third Battery effect in Marath. Use Cacophodon as a Gaea's Cradle untapper with a Scales in play to generate infinite mana and win the game. Alternatively use Kami of whispered hopes to fill the role of the scales effect and Cradle.\n\nCredit to SkoomaPuma for showing me this card! Credit to my Gaea's Cradle-pilled brain for finding this combo.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Marath + Cacophodon + any Hardened Scales effect + a Gaea's Cradle that taps for \nMana: for Marath, for Cacophodon, for our cheapest Scales, to start the combo. if Marath starts at 2 counters.\nCounters: Marath needs at least 2 counters.\nSequence:\n\nIf Marath has only 2 counters, first activate Marath for to refill Marath to 3 counters.\nActivate Marath for to ping Cacophodon. Cacophodon has 5 toughness and this marks 1 damage with 4 toughness remaining.\nResolve the Cacophodon trigger and untap your Gaea's Cradle. Retap it for .\nActivate Marath for to and refill to 3 counters.\nActivate Marath for to put a +1/+1 counter on Cacophodon. This will give it 2 counters. (on the first iteration of this loop, Cacophodon will be at 7 toughness with 1 damage marked and 6 toughness remaining)\nActivate Marath for to and refill to 3 counters.\nRepeat steps 2 through 6 in a loop ignoring steps 5 and 6 every other iteration. The +1/+1 counters placed on Cacophodon will pace with the damage applied by pings so that it will never die, and the loop will net 2 green mana every other cycle. Repeat this for infinite green mana.\nUse the infinite green mana to refill Marath with infinite counters and then ping the table for the win.\nTips: As said before, Kami of whispered hopes can fill the role of the scales effect and a Cradle effect. Both Cradle and Kami only need to tap for 3 to start the combo, but you will need to eat away at Cacophodon's toughness a bit more and use the excess mana to either grow Kami or make tokens for Cradle. Once at 4 mana (or more) you can start the loops presented above.\n\nBomberman\nA tried and true combo. Eats it to a lot of stax, but with Dockside dead this is one of our easiest two card infinite mana combos.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Marath + Lion's Eye Diamond + Auriok Salvagers\nMana: for Auriok Salvagers\nSequence:\n\nCrack LED for .\nActivate Auriok Salvagers spending to get LED back to hand. We net .\nRepeat steps 1 and 2 until you have infinite white mana.\nRepeat steps 1 and 2 creating green mana and red mana with the LED until we have infinite mana in all three colors.\nWith infinite colored mana, we can infinitely cast Marath, ping the table until Marath dies, and repeat for a win.\nTips: Use your Birthing Pod to make your Marath or any three drop into Auriok Salvagers! If you want to run Vexing Bauble, you can make infinite mana with Bomberman and then loop Bauble to draw your deck.\n\nEvolution Witness Loops\nFirst of all, Evolution Witness is a CRACKED card. Put a +1/+1 counter on EvoWitness and you get a permanent card back from your graveyard to hand. This has changed how we play Marath. Get your fetches back, get combo pieces back if they get destroyed, and it can even help us get around Drannith Magistrate in some situations. We found this when dockside was banned and we haven't looked back. This card is so good.\n\nMarath + Evolution Witness + Lion's Eye Diamond\nWith the right set up, we can use Marath to power our Evo Witness loops with LED generating infinite mana and casting Marath infinitely from the CZ. Shout out to Lord Vesuvius for doing the Mar-Math.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Marath + Evolution Witness + Lion's Eye Diamond\nMana: for Marath, for Evolution Witness\nCounters: Marath needs at least 3 counters and zero commander tax (sort of... see Tips)\nSequence:\n\nCrack LED for .\nSpend to activate Marath and put a counter on Evolution Witness.\nResolve Evolution Witness' ability to return LED to hand from the graveyard.\nRecast LED.\nRepeat steps 1 through 4 creating and spending Red mana.\nRepeat steps 1 through 4 creating and spending Green mana.\nAt this point Marath will die going back to the Command Zone, our mana pool contains , and we will have Evo Witness and LED still on the battlefield.\nRecast Marath for 5 mana leaving one mana in our mana pool.\nRepeat steps 1 through 6 and continue looping LED with Evo Wit until Marath dies again. Each loop generates 2 mana and removes a counter from Marath. After killing your 5 cost Marath in this way, you will be left with 11 mana in your mana pool with Evolution Witness and LED on the battlefield. Recast a 7 cost Marath and continue this loop generating more and more excess mana with each interation.\nEventually you will accumulate infinite mana.\nWith infinite colored mana, we can infinitely cast Marath, ping the table until Marath dies, and repeat for a win.\nTips: Generally this works best with zero commander tax as the 3 mana Marath loop produces the least excess mana. Having additional mana on board to power this combo can help initiate the loop. By the time we have burned through our 5 mana Marath, the excess mana is more than enough to overcome 4 commander tax if we have it.\n\nEvolution Witness + Lotus Petal/LED + Tarrian's Soulcleaver (Not currently in the deck)\nEquip Evo Witness and loop Petal or Lion's Eye Diamond for infinite colored mana.\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Evolution Witness + Tarrian's Soulcleaver + Lotus Petal or Lion's Eye Diamond\nMana: for Evolution Witness, to cast and to equip Soulcleaver to Evolution Witness.\nSequence:\n\nEquip Tarrian's Soulcleaver to Evolution Witness.\nSacrifice Lotus Petal (or LED) for mana.\nResolve Soulcleaver's ability to put a +1/+1 counter on Evolution Witness.\nResolve Evolution Witness' ability to return Lotus Petal (or LED) to hand from the graveyard.\nCast Lotus Petal (or LED)\nRepeat steps 2 through 5 until you have infinite colored mana.\nWith infinite colored mana, we can infinitely cast Marath, ping the table until Marath dies, and repeat for a win.\nTips: Obviously LED has a higher risk here as you will have to lose your hand. LED combos run a higher risk of blow out so make sure you have your silence effects up!\n\nWhy am I not running this? Tarrian Soulcleaver is a lovely card. It refills Marath pretty easily. But at 3 mana to use (1 to cast and 2 to equip), it just doesn't do enough for the cost and is a bit slow. That said, if I saw this in a Marath list, I wouldn't bat an eye. Back in Dockside days when everyone was cracking treasures, it was insanely good. These days I think its playstyle and meta dependent.\n\nMarath + Evolution Witness + Lion's Eye Diamond + Scales AKA \"you won't need to do this one often\"\nWith the addition of a scales effect, we can combo through Drannith Magistrate provided Marath is already out. This is very convoluted and I'm sorry lol\n\nPrerequisites:\n\nCards: Marath + Evolution Witness + Lion's Eye Diamond + any Hardened Scales effect\nMana: for Marath, for Evolution Witness, for our cheapest Scales\nCounters: Marath needs at least 3 counters.\nSequence:\n\nCrack LED for .\nSpend to activate Marath and put a counter on Evolution Witness.\nResolve Evolution Witness' ability to return LED to hand from the graveyard.\nRecast LED.\nRepeat steps 1 through 4 again this time making and spending green mana. At this point, we have Marath at 1 counter, LED in play, and floating.\nSpend to activate Marath and put a counter on Evolution Witness.\nMarath will die. Send him to the graveyard.\nCrack LED for .\nResolve Evolution Witness' ability to return Marath to hand from the graveyard. We have floating.\nSpend to recast Marath. Marath enters with 4 counters due to the Scales effect. We have floating.\nRepeat steps 2 through 5 three times choosing and spending a different color of mana with each iteration.\nWhen Marath is at one counter, follow steps 6 through 10. Each iteration will yield three excess mana.\nOnce you have infinite mana from this loop, begin using Marath to ping your opponents but always do the Marath Evolution Witness recursion trick with Marath's last counter. Loop this and win!\nTips: Using LED is already risky. Putting Marath in the graveyard is even riskier! Unbound Flourishing technically works here, but not in the same way as a Scales effect. Unbound will copy your Marath triggers and let you get twice as many LED recursions which simplifies the line.\n\n4. INCLUSIONS AND EXCLUSIONS (WIP)\nSection WIP\nWhy Aren't You Playing...\nOther Scales Effects:\nThere are currently over 15 \"Scales\" effects in magic. Some of these add an additional counter and others double the number of counters. I'm only going to mention a few here that are very close to making the cut but don't quite get there. I currently run four scales effects: Hardened Scales, Michelangelo Weirdness to 11, Kami of Whispered Hopes, and Unbound Flourishing. If you want to run more than 4 scales, consider what is listed below (listed in order of best to worst). This list doesn't include 4+ mana cost scales or the really terrible 3 cost scales.\n\nConclave Mentor: This is the classic creature Scales and served this list well for years. With the release of Michelangelo to 11, I swapped this out. That said, this is what you should grab if you want a third creature scales.\nBenevolent Hydra: Old Benny used to be a classic for Marath and some lists may still run it. As a 1/1 for two green pips, we just have better options, but I wouldn't be shocked to see this in a list.\nOzolith, the shattered spire: While the cost is right at 2 mana and cycling ability is interesting, this is a Scales effect that we struggle to tutor as artifact tutors are quite limited in Marath.\nBranching Evolution: 3 CMC enchantment that isn't busted (like Unbound Flourishing). Counter doubling is good but very niche as all Marath activations are typically in increments of 1.\nLae'zel Vlaakith's Champion: An extra mana for no other bells and whistles. Not worth it.\nEverything beyond these are either too expensive, don't do enough on their own, or both.\nTrap Cards:\nA lot of Marath brewers look at these cards when they first pick up the list. These cards are traps and should not be included in Marath cEDH imo.\n\nRunaway Steam-kin: Most new Marath players look at this and a Scales effect and assume it can go infinite with Marath, but it doesn't. Its just mana neutral and needs a second Scales to go off. Its a trap.\nCrystalline Crawler: This might look like a second copy of Trilobite with a quick read, but similar to steam-kin, crawler doesn't do what you want it to do until you have two scales effects in play.\nFood Chain: Lots of players read Marath and assume that going infinite with food chain lets you win, but you can't spend that mana on Marath's activated abilities. This needs Mana Echoes or another card to make it truly infinite, which makes it a bad choice for the deck. Food Chain isn't any more efficient than our other combos, and its harder to tutor.\nZirda, the Dawnwaker: You may look at Zirda and consider the cost reduction to be a boon to Marath, but it is very rarely useful. Marath activations are almost always in 1 mana increments so\n"}]}
