Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"Ah this takes me back. Early on in my Commander career I built a deck like this and it ignited my love for reanimator strategies. And now, I have come back and updated it to... well this:\nMono-White Reanimator Angel Kindred, led by "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Bruna, the Fading Light"}},{"insert":", with the ultimate goal of melding her with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Gisela, the Broken Blade"}},{"insert":" to make "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Brisela, Voice of Nightmares"}},{"insert":". \n\nFirst things first, we need to talk about ramp. Our commander has a mana value of seven, and - while she is a mid/late game play - we still want to play her on time. We run 25 dedicated pieces of ramp to ensure that we can cast Bruna and our other large angels on time - or earlier. All of the usual suspects are here in terms of... sane Mono-White Ramp ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sol Ring"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Wayfarer's Bauble"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Arcane Signet"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Marble Diamond"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Pearl Medallion"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Smuggler's Share"}},{"insert":"), as well as some catch-up Ramp cards ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Weathered Wayfarer"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Knight of the White Orchid"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Archaeomancer's Map"}},{"insert":"). We absolutely run "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Starnheim Aspirant"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Herald's Horn"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Herald of War"}},{"insert":" and - the card that many would say should be our commander - "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Giada, Font of Hope"}},{"insert":" due to the sheer number of Angels in the deck. The rest of the ramp spells are just here because they fit some kind of niche in the deck, such as milling/discarding cards ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Millikin"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Collector's Vault"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"The Restoration of Eiganjo // Architect of Restoration"}},{"insert":"), reanimation ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Burnished Hart"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Solemn Simulacrum"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Angel of the Ruins"}},{"insert":") or the simple fact that we are a Mono-White battlecruiser deck ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sword of the Animist"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Oketra's Monument"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hedron Archive"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Keeper of the Accord"}},{"insert":").\n\nSo, what do we do with all this Ramp? Well, like I said, we cast Bruna. Or one of our other Angels, but it is most cost effective for us to cast Bruna. So, to that end, we want to fill our graveyard so we can get value from casting her. In order to do this, we run a total of 16 self-mill and self-discard cards that should allow us to dump our Angels into the graveyard. In addition to the ones we have already discussed, we run "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Geier Reach Sanitarium"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Key to the City"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mask of Memory"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Anvil of Bogardan"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Devout Witness"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Matzalantli, the Great Door // The Core"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hazoret's Monument"}},{"insert":" for Discard and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Grindstone"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Codex Shredder"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Altar of Dementia"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Mesmeric Orb"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Perpetual Timepiece"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Palantír of Orthanc"}},{"insert":" for mill. Most of these have some secondary purpose attached to them, be it tapping for mana, providing evasion, removal, draw or recursion. In fact, Altar of Dementia is part of a convoluted combo with "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Fiend Hunter"}},{"insert":" and either "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Karmic Guide"}},{"insert":" or "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Sun Titan"}},{"insert":" to continually sac and recur the Fiend Hunter to mill all our opponents out.\n\nBut what are we hoping to put in our graveyard and then reanimate? Big Angels, or I guess the occasional value Human. My favorite target is of course Gisela, but we also have anthems such as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Lyra Dawnbringer"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Avacyn, Angel of Hope"}},{"insert":", removal such as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Angel of Sanctions"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Angel of Serenity"}},{"insert":" or... more reanimation such as "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Angel of Indemnity"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Emeria Shepherd"}},{"insert":". Redundancy is important.\n\nFrom there, the deck wins by either attacking with Angels, summoning Brisela or the aforementioned infinite mill combo.\n\nAs always, this main plan is supported by the rest of the deck: primarily its Removal, Draw, Tutor and Protection packages, as well as our Land base and some miscellaneous recursion pieces. \n\nRemoval wise, the deck strikes a balance between cheap spot removal ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Path to Exile"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Swords to Plowshares"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Darksteel Mutation"}},{"insert":" and so on), sweepers ("},{"insert":{"card-link":"Settle the Wreckage"}},{"insert":", "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Starfall Invocation"}},{"insert":" and "},{"insert":{"card-link":"Hour of Revelation"}},{"insert":") and \"control finisher\" Angels that remove stuff on ETB. With 19 total pieces of removal, the general plan is to use it as if we were a control deck. Remove anything that interrupts our game plan or is pointed at us, help stop people from pulling too far ahead and then slam down a big Angel that also clears the way for attacks and future plays.\n\nAs for Draw effects, we run 22 simply to ensure we see more cards. Technically, Matzalantli is a TDFC that can flip into a Land - a really good Land at that - and it is technically possible for us to flip it in this deck... but I don't really foresee that happening often.\n\nAnd that is Bruna's wild ride with the Flight of Nightmares. Is it the best Mono-White Angel deck possible? No. But it is fun and it scratches my Reanimator itch. And I do think that it is an equally valid direction to take Angels, just like Giada and Avacyn, Angel of Hope. It plays different from both of those other builds thanks to the Self-Mill and Reanimation focus.\n"}]}
