Description

{"ops":[{"insert":"Rebbec, Architect of Ascension // Alena, Kessig Trapper Artifact Sudoku Primer \n\nIntroduction\n\nI call this my 'Sudoku Deck'. I didn't have a Boros deck and I didn't want to do a combat focused deck or an equipment deck. I had stumbled across Rebbec in a different deck and enjoyed the minigame of giving everything protection. So I thought I would make a full deck around that interaction. Alena was the other partner, because Boris struggles with ramp and card draw, so why not put some ramp in the command zone?\n\nThe Commander\n\nThe focus of this partner deck is Rebbec, Architect of Ascension. She states that ‘Artifacts you control have protection from each CMC among artifacts you control.’ So, in theory you would want to control a lot of different artifacts, of differing CMC’s, so that your artifacts are protected from as much as possible, basically shroud. But, how do we utilise this?\nAlena, Kessig Trapper has first strike and has ‘Tap, gain red mana equal to the power of the biggest creature that entered the battlefield this turn’ or something to that effect. She doesn't direct us in a particular direction, refunding any mana from casting a spell is good. But, if we played big creatures, we could get a lot of extra mana each turn.\n\nHypothesis\n\nCan we utilise protection to our advantage without it getting in the way of our own gameplay?\n\nCan we make a Boros deck that isn't solely about attacking?\n\nCan we use artifacts in an interesting way?\n\nThe Method\n\nRamp\n\nThis is an artifact deck, so I consider ramp to be a mix of ramp and cost reduction. The cost reduction won't help us play our non-artifact creatures, but those are the risks we take.\nFirst of all is the boring ramp pieces: Arcane Signet, Ornithopter of Paradise, Palladium Myr, Sol Ring, Solemn Simulacrum, and Talisman of Conviction. Then there are the cost reducers: Foundry Inspector, Jhoira’s Familiar, and Mycosynth Golem. Jhoira’s Familiar does help us cast our commanders, and Mycosynth Golem gives our artifacts affinity for artifacts which is too good. Moonsilver key is our tutor. It could tutor a land, but also let us grab any mana producing artifact. Helping us grab an artifact of the cmc we require to fill a gap in our protection sudoku; including Forsaken Monument, because it does produce mana (as the rules dictate). Prototype Portal is a strange beast. Exile an artifact under it and tap and pay X to make a copy of that artifact. Really good no matter what it's copying, but we can put an artifact land under it and ramp an extra land each turn for free since the CMC is zero.\n\nDraw\n\nThis is one of my stranger draw packages. There are some obvious inclusions and some not so obvious ones. The obvious choices are: Alibou, Ancient Witness, Brainstone, Esper Sentinel, Jeska’s Will, Losheel, Clockwork Scholar, Mishra’s Desk, Mystic Forge, and Thrill of Possiblity. All of these cards help us draw cards in one way or another, and so much more than that besides. They are always included in a Boros artifact deck, so I won't dwell on them. Eye of Vecna is here because it's a cheap source of card draw, and when we don't want to use it for card draw we can use it to feed Goblin Welder and friends. Halo Fountain helps us draw cards, untap our attacking creatures and possibly even win the game. Phyrexian Dragon Engine is bad card draw, but it's a great artifact creature, so the card draw is an added extra. Platoon Dispenser makes an artifact token, which counts to our protection sudoku, and we will usually have a lot of creatures on the battlefield, so that draw effect will trigger most turns. Once again, Ruin Grinder is just a big beater, so having the wheel effect is just a bonus, and, if we draw him early, we can cycle it away for another land drop. Treasure Keeper is more fodder for Goblin Welder, but gets an extra card on death which is nice.\n\nRemoval and Board Wipes\n\nThis deck has possibly the least amount of removal in any of my decks. This deck wants to be the problem, so removal is secondary and only used when necessary. Counterspells would fit the deck more than hard removal, but I don't think the available spells are worth a spell slot.\nThe standard spells are: Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Chaos Warp, and Wear // Tear. No Generous Gift. I think Chaos Warp is a better removal spell, because it can get around indestructible. Angel of Ruin is like Ruin Grinder, a big beater with upsides. Duplicant is a high CMC removal spell, but having an artifact version of your opponent's best creature that is difficult to removal is hard to pass up. Nautiloid Ship does a few thing. Graveyard hate is always good. Getting free creatures from a flying creature is good. It also gives Rebbec more to do, because we are probably never attacked or blocking with Rebbec, so she might as well crew this vehicle. Organic Extinction is a one-sided board wipe, and so is Steel Hellkite to some degree.\n\nProtection\n\nAs soon as you mention that your permanents can't be removed, your opponents will do anything in their power to remove them, even if it's to their own detriment. So, a large protection package is required to help patch the sudoku holes. Also, I have tried a version of the deck with a higher recursion package and a lower protection package. That deck does not work as well as the version I have now. I think you need a dedicated graveyard deck, with graveyard win cons, to get that deck across the finish line.\nThe obvious choices here are: Boros Charm, Make a Stand, Teferi's Protection, and Unbreakable Formation. I choose to have spells that save my board rather than save individual creatures, because, when you have protection, your opponents realise only a board wipe will stop you. Akroma's Will is both a win con and a protection spell. Bronze Guardian, once again, is a big beater with upsides, and giving your artifacts ward 2 is a great upside. Liquimetal Coating and Liquimetal Torque are protection spells for Rebbec. The other realisation your opponents will have is that removing Rebbec will cripple the deck, and they aren't wrong. So, making her an artifact gives her all the protection you have and possibly fills up the sudoku hole of 4CMC. Also, Liquimetal Torque is will be the tutor target for Moonsilver Key nine out of ten times.\n\nRecursion\n\nAs stated previously, the recursion package in this deck is very small compared to what it could be. The deck has Goblin Engineer, Goblin Welder, and Scrap Trawler because of course it does. Ironsoul Enforcer is a good card that pressures life totals and gets an artifact back every turn. \n\nArtifact Creatures\n\nThis section is a living lesson for deck builders everywhere. At one point, I was making constant adjustments to the deck and replacing cards here and there with ‘obvious upgrades’. Then I'd play the deck and it was terrible. Never mind, just a bad game. Everyone has them. Only after several bad games in a row did I think ‘something isn't right’, and after checking the deck, I realised there were only about twelves creatures in the deck. So, now I keep a running tally of important aspects of my decks, like Artifact Creatures, to make sure I don't make the same mistake. It's also a category for creatures that are really good, but don't fit in any other category like Stonecoil Serpent and Arcbound Crusher.\n\nToken Generators\n\nI'm a big fan of tokens, so I can't help but include them in a deck; and artifact decks have the best tokens. In this deck we are going to make use of the Karn-struct. Digsite Engineer, and Karn, Scion of Urza both make Karn-structs. Wormcoil Engine is Wormcoil Engine.\n\nAnthems and Utility\n\nA small section that covers two categories, this could be considered win-cons. Jor Kadeen, the Prevailer and Tempered Steel give a buff to our entire army. Darksteel Forge protects our board from the inevitable board wipe. Forsaken Monument is our other typical tutor target. Gaining life, adding mana, and buffing our board. It does everything. \nOnto utility. Arena of the Ancients is a little harsh, but with the amount of legends that are run in todays game, it's too funny not to do it. Shimmer Myr is fun, because playing at instant speed turns the deck into more of a blue deck. Holding up my mana to play the correct CMC spell when I need them, not just playing on curve. Steel Overseer is a very slow anthem, but if it's left alone for too long it can be the biggest anthem in the game. Steel Seraph grants evasion or vigilance to or biggest beater. They may have a CMC that can block our creatures, but does that creature have flying or reach?\n\nLands\n\nOnce again, another deck that can have a lot of utility lands and not be too punished for it. Yes it does need that one white mana for Rebbec, but a lot of the other cards are just colourless. The Urza lands are in the deck for a laugh, and so are a lot of the other choices. The only ones I will note are the indestructible lands. When the token player is trying to kill you and is trying to destroy your treasures and other tokens, it's useful to have an indestructible land to hold on to that protection from 0CMC.\n\nConclusion\n\nLike a lot of my decks, the deck is fun, but not very good. It's slow, clunky, and folds like an old deck chair to a board wipe. However, it is funny to assemble the full sudoku plus 0 and claim the moral victory. It could be improved with more control elements, like Ethersworn Canonist, and that card does come in and out of the deck quite regularly; but it's a personal choice. And, at the moment, I'm enjoying the deck a lot.\n"}]}
